Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 meta-review: One $1,200 beast, one case of deja vu

The verdict is in, and frankly, it's not what we expected: Nvidia's GeForce RTX 2080 and 2080 Ti graphics cards may be powerful, but they may also be a tough sell for discerning PC gamers.

We read through pages and pages of reviews so you don't have to, and here are the major takeaways so far:

GeForce RTX 2080 Ti

  • The $1,200 GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Founder's Edition is pretty clearly the fastest video card in the world -- it's even faster than the $3,000 Titan V in most games, according to Tom's Hardware.
  • Aside from ridiculous juggernauts like the Titan V, it's the first card where reviewers were consistently able to play the most demanding games at a smooth 60 frames per second on a 4K monitor with maxed out graphics settings -- no tweaking necessary.
  • But at $1,200 -- or $1,000 when Nvidia's partners sell their own versions -- who's to say it's not a ridiculous juggernaut too? Nvidia's last flagship GeForce card started at $700. You're paying Titan money for Titan-grade performance here. And you could build an entire gaming PC for that money.
  • It consumes more power than previous-gen video cards -- AnandTech measured 50 watts more under load, and Ars Technica had to upgrade its computer's power supply in order to plug in a VR headset too.

GeForce RTX 2080

  • Get this: The $800 GeForce RTX 2080 Founder's Edition isn't faster in most games than the $700 GTX 1080 Ti from March 2017. In game after game, reviewers found the new card neck and neck with a 1-and-a-half-year-old GPU. And sometimes, the older GPU won. Ars Technica called the eerily similar results "a serious case of déjà vu."
  • The RTX 2080 is roughly 35 percent faster than the GTX 1080, depending on which reviewer you ask -- but entry-level GTX 1080 cards can now easily be found south of $500. It's just not a fair comparison, even once $700 OEM versions of the RTX 2080 begin to ship.
  • It's not fast enough to play all of today's games at 4K and 60fps with maxed settings. If you don't want to mess with settings, it's probably a little more suited to a 2,560x1,440 (aka 1440p) monitor.

Both cards

  • Nvidia didn't provide reviewers with a single game that had enabled RTX-exclusive features like raytracing and AI rendering, so the benefits of those are totally theoretical right now.
  • Ditto the included VirtualLink port for single-cable VR headsets. No headsets support it yet.
  • If you're running a 1080p monitor, both of these GPUs may be overkill -- many of these games are still CPU limited, meaning that even with the fastest desktop processors, your games can't run any faster than a certain frame rate.
  • The new Founder's Edition dual-fan cooler appears to make these cards run slightly but notably quieter than previous generations. However, that may only apply to the Founder's Edition cards with their $100 to $200 premium.

A lot of PC hardware reviewers came to a lot of conclusions about Nvidia's new graphics cards, but these quotes rang particularly true:

Tom's Hardware: "If you aspire to game at 4K and don't want to choose between smooth frame rates and maxed-out graphics quality, GeForce RTX 2080 Ti is the card to own."

PC Perspective: "Until we see substantial software adoption of features like DLSS and real-time ray tracing in PC games, or the GTX 1080 Ti disappears from the retail channel, it would be impossible for me to recommend the RTX 2080 over the GTX 1080 Ti."

Ars Technica: "$1,200 is a lot of money to guarantee locked 4K/60fps performance at near-highest settings in your favorite PC games, while the wait and additional cost of the RTX 2080 feels like a lot to ask for when the above benchmarks tell us that the 1080 Ti still pretty much packs the same punch."

AnandTech: "[Gamers] will have to think long and hard about paying extra to buy graphics hardware that is priced extra with features that aren't yet applicable to real-world gaming, and yet only provides performance comparable to previous generation video cards."

It's going to be interesting to see if reviewers change their mind when games that support ray tracing arrive -- and when the less-expensive, $600/$500 GeForce RTX 2070 arrives next month.

Nvidia's Titan cards have always walked a fine line between the gamer-oriented GeForce and the professionally targeted Quadro. They're basically Quadro-power cards with GeForce-capability drivers. That historically plops them into the really, really expensive gaming GPU category or on the lists of video professionals who demand speed and value more than certification.

The new $2,499 Titan RTX, a Turing-architecture-based card that Nvidia announced Monday, adds even more of that power to the mix. It should still appeal to gamers, especially those who want to play Metro Exodus in 8K when it arrives in 2019. But the architecture's optimized ray-tracing and AI-acceleration cores also make it an option for more dataset-focused research, AI and machine-learning development and real-time 3D professional work that doesn't require workstation-class drivers.

The distinction between the GeForce and Quadro cards is waning over time as applications drift away from OpenGL. Adobe's video applications such as Premiere and After Effects, for example, use the CUDA cores directly for acceleration. But Photoshop is still the elephant in that room. You can still only get 30-bit color support (10 bits per channel) with the workstation drivers, which are restricted to Quadro cards.

It's hard to make direct comparisons solely based on specs, in part because Nvidia is inconsistent about the specs it provides at launch. You usually have to wait a little bit until people dig in and ferret them out. 

Most of the specs Nvidia's provided for the $6,300 Quadro RTX 6000 and the $2,499 Titan RTX are almost identical -- the Quadro does have a faster base GPU clock speed and four DisplayPort connectors vs. the Titan's three. So I can't wait to find out what magic the Quadro performs that merits an almost $4,000 premium. Given that neither GPu is shipping yet (the Quadro's in preorder and the Titan is slated for the end of November), we'll have to wait and see.

On the flipside, the less-endowed Quadro RTX 5000 only costs $200 less than the Titan RTX, so you give up quite a bit of power in exchange for those workstation certifications.

As a gaming card, it looks like it'll fit right into its traditional slot as a power bump up from the highest-end GeForce. But unless it delivers a bigger performance gap than the previous generation's GTX 1080 Ti/Titan Xp, it will be doubly not worth it at twice the price of the RTX 2080 Ti. Or it will be, at least, until more games ship which take advantage of its ray-tracing processors.

Not just for gamers: New Nvidia Studio drivers deliver 30-bit color for Photoshop

I never thought I'd see the day: Until today you had to spring for a pricey Nvidia Quadro workstation graphics card to properly view your shiny ray-traced renders or accurately grade HDR video in professional applications such as Adobe Photoshop and Premiere. Now that 30-bit support comes down to more affordable GeForce and Titan cards. And not just the RTX models -- "across all Nvidia product lines and GPUs."   

The latest Studio driver announcement from Siggraph comes in conjunction with news of more laptops added to its RTX Studio roster, though most of them were revealed at the Studio launch. There are two new Lenovos: the Y740 15 Studio Edition and Y740 17 Studio Edition, variations of its Legion Y740 gaming laptops but with better screens for creative work.

Photoshop's "30 Bit Display" option is no longer a dummy checkbox for GeForce.

Photoshop has long given you the option to turn on a 30-bit color pipe between it and the graphics card. But if you enabled it on a system with a consumer-targeted GeForce or Titan graphics card, it didn't do anything. That's why there's always been such confusion as to whether you could display 30-bit color with a GeForce card. I mean, there's a check box and you can check it!

But Photoshop and Premiere use OpenGL to communicate with the graphics card, at least for color rendering, and the specific API calls to use deep color have only worked with Quadro cards. That can sting when you spent over $1,000 on a GTX 1080 Ti.

In its briefing, Nvidia made it sound like 30-bit-on-GeForce was a brand new idea inspired by Studio users' requests. Does that mean the company was intentionally ignoring all the previous pleas -- such as this one from its own forums in 2014?

It's possible Nvidia decided that it had bigger professional fish to fry with Quadro, including AI and big data, and decided that the advantages of letting GeForce support a previously limited-to-workstation capability would boost the professional credibility for its new Studio marketing push. That seems especially likely given the adoption of AMD's graphics on almost every hardware platform, as well as its high-powered exclusive partner, Apple.

Or maybe it's to allow game designers to work on an Nvidia graphics card that can actually play games without having to pay hundreds extra just to get the extra color depth, since GeForce and Titan hold up pretty well in the midrange 3D-acceleration department.

To properly take advantage of this, you still need all the other elements -- a color-accurate display capable of 30-bit (aka 10-bit) color, for one. The ability to handle a 30-bit data stream is actually pretty common now -- most displays claiming to be able to decode HDR video, which requires a 10-bit transform, can do it -- but you won't see much of a difference without a true 10-bit panel, which are still pretty rare among nonprofessionals. 

That's because most people associate insufficient bit depth with banding, the appearance of visually distinguishable borders between what should be smoothly graduated color. Monitors have gotten good at disguising banding artifacts by visually dithering the borders between colors where necessary. But when you're grading HDR video or painting on 3D renders, for example, dithering doesn't cut it. 

And the extra precision is surely welcome when your doctor is trying to tell the difference between a tumor and a shadow on his cheap system. From Nvidia's own white paper in 2009: "While dithering produces a visually smooth image, the pixels no longer correlate to the source data. This matters in mission-critical applications like diagnostic imaging where a tumor may only be one or two pixels big."
