Not just for gamers: New Nvidia Studio drivers deliver 30-bit color for Photoshop

I never thought I'd see the day: Until today you had to spring for a pricey Nvidia Quadro workstation graphics card to properly view your shiny ray-traced renders or accurately grade HDR video in professional applications such as Adobe Photoshop and Premiere. Now that 30-bit support comes down to more affordable GeForce and Titan cards. And not just the RTX models -- "across all Nvidia product lines and GPUs."   

The latest Studio driver announcement from Siggraph comes in conjunction with news of more laptops added to its RTX Studio roster, though most of them were revealed at the Studio launch. There are two new Lenovos: the Y740 15 Studio Edition and Y740 17 Studio Edition, variations of its Legion Y740 gaming laptops but with better screens for creative work.

Photoshop has long given you the option to turn on a 30-bit color pipe between it and the graphics card. But if you enabled it on a system with a consumer-targeted GeForce or Titan graphics card, it didn't do anything. That's why there's always been such confusion as to whether you could display 30-bit color with a GeForce card. I mean, there's a check box and you can check it!

But Photoshop and Premiere use OpenGL to communicate with the graphics card, at least for color rendering, and the specific API calls to use deep color have only worked with Quadro cards. That can sting when you spent over $1,000 on a GTX 1080 Ti.

In its briefing, Nvidia made it sound like 30-bit-on-GeForce was a brand new idea inspired by Studio users' requests. Does that mean the company was intentionally ignoring all the previous pleas -- such as this one from its own forums in 2014?

It's possible Nvidia decided that it had bigger professional fish to fry with Quadro, including AI and big data, and decided that the advantages of letting GeForce support a previously limited-to-workstation capability would boost the professional credibility for its new Studio marketing push. That seems especially likely given the adoption of AMD's graphics on almost every hardware platform, as well as its high-powered exclusive partner, Apple.

Or maybe it's to allow game designers to work on an Nvidia graphics card that can actually play games without having to pay hundreds extra just to get the extra color depth, since GeForce and Titan hold up pretty well in the midrange 3D-acceleration department.

To properly take advantage of this, you still need all the other elements -- a color-accurate display capable of 30-bit (aka 10-bit) color, for one. The ability to handle a 30-bit data stream is actually pretty common now -- most displays claiming to be able to decode HDR video, which requires a 10-bit transform, can do it -- but you won't see much of a difference without a true 10-bit panel, which are still pretty rare among nonprofessionals. 

That's because most people associate insufficient bit depth with banding, the appearance of visually distinguishable borders between what should be smoothly graduated color. Monitors have gotten good at disguising banding artifacts by visually dithering the borders between colors where necessary. But when you're grading HDR video or painting on 3D renders, for example, dithering doesn't cut it. 

And the extra precision is surely welcome when your doctor is trying to tell the difference between a tumor and a shadow on his cheap system. From Nvidia's own white paper in 2009: "While dithering produces a visually smooth image, the pixels no longer correlate to the source data. This matters in mission-critical applications like diagnostic imaging where a tumor may only be one or two pixels big."

Nvidia GeForce Now gaming comes to Apple M1 Macs

A year after its official launch, Nvidia's GeForce Now cloud gaming service is close to completing its expansion to support every platform. Just last week the beta of the service became available for Chrome on Windows and Mac, and on Thursday the company announced the app will work on Apple Macs that use the new M1 CPU via the Rosetta 2 emulator.

Nvidia's service, which lets you play PC games you own on almost any device, is the first to offer support for the M1. Using the emulator is a half step, however -- it remains to be seen if there'll be any performance hit from having to go through a translation layer. But you always have the alternative of playing under Chrome or Apple's own Safari browser, both of which run natively on the M1.

You'll almost always have a better experience playing via the app than within a browser -- browsers have network overhead that a dedicated app doesn't have to deal with -- but it never hurts to have the option if for some reason you can't install or run the app.

We're going to see quite a few PCs -- laptops and desktops -- this year and beyond aimed at all the people who started working from home during the pandemic and aren't going back to an office full-time or at all. It's a change that will benefit everyone, regardless of where you're working from, because it's forced PC-makers to make some overdue improvements. The upcoming Acer Aspire C24 and C27 all-in-one desktops announced at CES 2022 are good examples. 

The 24- and 27-inch desktops will have 12th-gen Intel processors up to a Core i7, up to 64GB of memory, a 1TB or 2TB SSD for storage and entry-level Nvidia GeForce MX550 discrete graphics. The resolution on the displays is just 1080p but they are touchscreens. Also, they have Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 6E, so moving data around fast won't be a problem.

To help out with the increase in video conference calls you're no doubt doing, Acer put in a 5-megapixel webcam with a physical privacy shutter and dual microphones for better audio. And the AIOs only weigh about 3 or 4 pounds (1.4 or 1.8 kilograms) depending on the model, so if you have to pick up and move to another room in your house to work, it seems like it'll be pretty painless.

No pricing or availability was announced, but the Aspire line is all about value, so I would expect these to be reasonably affordable whenever they arrive this year.

Lenovo's Legion gaming laptops offer good mainstream performance with designs that don't necessarily scream "gamer." So when I saw the announcement for the 15-inch Legion Y740S, a gaming laptop that weighs only 4.2 pounds (1.9 kg), is just 0.6-inch thick (14.9mm) starting at $1,100, and is expected to be on display at CES 2020 this week, I quickly searched for what discrete graphics chip would be in it to power my gaming on the go. 

The answer is none. It has no discrete graphics.

The laptop will have up to a 10th-gen Intel Core i9 H-series processor. That chip's integrated graphics are expected to be good enough for entry-level gaming and other graphics tasks that Intel's integrated graphics weren't up for in the past. But for those who expect more from a gaming laptop than integrated graphics, which is everyone really, Lenovo has an answer.  

In an interesting move, the company made an external Thunderbolt 3 GPU box to pair with the Y740S, the Legion BoostStation. Not every gaming manufacturer makes its own eGPU, but for Lenovo, the BoostStation enabled the ultraslim profile of the Y740S -- by putting the graphics on the outside. The eGPU itself bears a strong resemblance to a rotated version of Razer's Core X, with its slide-out tray, venting design, aluminum build and arrangement of the back Ethernet and USB ports.

The BoostStation is a bit less accommodating, though; it looks like it only fits a dual-width card instead of the triple-width slot on the Razer. However, you can use Lenovo's for external storage as well, with slots for a hard disk/SATA SSD or a pair of PCIe SSD modules, as long as the 500-watt power supply can accommodate your options. 

Lenovo will offer pre-equipped versions of the BoostStation with Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060, 2070 or 2080 Super cards, a GTX 1660 Ti or an AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT, though you can always choose your own graphics card. It starts at $250, which is a pretty good price for the empty box. It's expected to ship in May alongside the laptop. That's assuming Intel is able to deliver its processors on schedule, something it struggled to do much of last year. 

One of the biggest issues with gaming laptops is that the GPU typically can't be upgraded, so at least this gives you options. But without discrete graphics built in, is the Legion Y740S even a gaming laptop? Lenovo gave it a new keyboard design with tactile feedback that it says is better for gameplay. But it also used a display panel with a 60Hz refresh rate, whereas much of its competition has moved to 120Hz panels (or faster) for smoother visuals. In the end, it's a thin-and-light 15-inch laptop with an edgier design and a few gaming features thrown in, but you'll need to spend more on the eGPU if you want to actually game with it.

Nvidia has slashed the price on its powerful gaming-centric 8-inch Android tablet, down to $199 and £149 in the UK, which converts to around AU$320. That's down from $299 (£240 in the UK), which leaves you a bit of extra cash to spend on apps or a controller.

A quick refresher: The Nvidia Shield Tablet arrived last August, and it didn't fail to impress. Nvidia crammed its powerful Tegra K1 processor into an 8-inch shell, with a 1,920x1,200-pixel resolution display. Games optimized for the K1 -- such as Half-Life 2 and Portal -- look stunning, but they're few and far between and you'll really want to pick up a Shield controller for the best experience.

But if you've got a gaming PC equipped with an Nvidia GPU, you can stream games from your PC to the tablet. When connected to a TV, the tablet will play games at up to 1080p, and stream 4K content from online services such as Netflix and YouTube. The tablet also supports Nvidia's GeForce Now videogame streaming service.

The Shield Tablet ships with 16GB of storage, but it can support up to 128GB microSD cards. Couple that with a gaming controller, and you've potentially got a rather inexpensive gaming platform on your hands. If your interest is piqued, you can pick one up from stores like Amazon or Best Buy, or directly from Nvidia.

Nvidia has acquired SoftBank's Arm chip division for $40 billion in cash and stock in the chip industry's largest deal ever. As part of the deal, made this Sunday, SoftBank will take an ownership stake in Nvidia that's expected to be less than 10%, the companies said in a joint statement.

Bloomberg reported last week that Nvidia and SoftBank were in advanced talks, with Nvidia the lone potential buyer. That followed an earlier report by The Wall Street Journal that SoftBank was considering a sale of Arm. The Journal also reported Saturday's news of an imminent Nvidia-SoftBank agreement.

Arm isn't as well-known as mega chip companies such as Qualcomm and Intel, but its work lies behind the processors inside many of the world's mobile phones.

Arm licenses designs to companies like Qualcomm but also licenses its chip instruction set -- the collection of commands software can use to control it -- to companies like Apple that design their own. Arm's designs are also used as the basis for chips made by Samsung and Nvidia.

In June, Apple said it would overhaul its Mac computers with its own Arm chips, which are similar to the ones it designs for iPhones and iPads, moving away from the Intel processors it has used for the past 14 years. Arm licenses its chip instruction set -- the collection of commands software can use to control a chip -- to companies like Apple that design their own processors.

SoftBank purchased the UK-based Arm in 2016 for $32 billion with the intent of bolstering its internet of things division. Nvidia said it expects the tie-up to boost its artificial intelligence ambitions.

"AI is the most powerful technology force of our time and has launched a new wave of computing," Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang said in a statement. "In the years ahead, trillions of computers running AI will create a new internet-of-things that is thousands of times larger than today's internet-of-people."

The companies said they expect the deal to close in 18 months, noting that it will require approval of the US, UK, EU and China.

Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3070 may end up suffering from middle-child syndrome, squeezed between the two ends of Nvidia's GPU spectrum: basic 1440p for a little less or basic 4K/high-frame rate 1440p for a little more. The GeForce RTX 3070 Founders Edition of the $499 (£469, AU$809) graphics card I tested is geared toward high-frame rate/quality 1440p gaming, and delivers similar performance to the RTX 2080 Ti for most uses (but not all), which debuted at $999. The boost over its predecessor, the more expensive RTX 2070 Super, depends upon what you need it to do. 

The release of the 3070 follows the bumpy launch of the $699 RTX 3080 and its $1,500 sibling, the RTX 3090, both experiencing price gouging due to shortages. But rumors have also surfaced about a slightly cheaper RTX 3060 Ti coming soon as well as a new card slotted between the 3070 and 3080. Plus, it's likely we'll get an entry-level 30 series card early next year to feed the mid-$300 buyers. And that doesn't take into account AMD's launch of its ambitious Radeon RX 6000-series "Big Navi" gaming cards that use the same architecture as the upcoming Xbox Series X and S and PS5consoles.

Like the RTX 3080-based graphics cards, the Ampere-generation of the company's GPU architecture achieves playable frame rates in games that use RTX-specific features like ray-tracing and global illumination. Its AI-based upscaling feature, DLSS, lets you finally game at better-than-bare-minimum frame rates without visible degradation in quality. The GPU also lifts performance over predecessors in games that don't take advantage of the whizzy features by about 10% to 20% on average, which is really most games.   

Unlike its higher-end siblings, the 3070 uses older GDDR6 memory and has the same memory bandwidth as the 2070 Super. It still gets some performance boosts thanks to the second-gen ray tracing and third-gen Tensor cores, such as new algorithms and instruction sets that make them a lot more efficient and a switch to an 8nm process size from 12nm. And as is typical, it has increased core counts -- it has a lower ray-tracing core count but the Ampere RT cores are doubled-up over the Turing cores, so technically the 3070 has more. But you won't see the same uplift that the 3080 and 3090 received over earlier models.

It's also significantly less power-hungry than the higher-end cards, roughly the same as before, plus it's the same size as the 2080 Ti. While the 3070 has a similar 12-pin power connector design to the 3080 -- including an adapter in the box -- it still only connects to a single 8-pin block from the power supply. All of that means it's a much simpler upgrade, especially in tight systems. The Founders Edition, at least, ran cool and quiet during my testing, in a system where I swapped it for the 2070 Super.

I have no complaints about the RTX 3070's performance, and it's definitely worth its $499 price tag. But it may not be your best choice for the money. The Ti models generally have more memory and slightly wider data paths than the non-Ti models, which is why you'll find the 11GB 2080 Ti occasionally outperforming the 8GB 3070. It makes sense to wait and see if an RTX 3060 Ti or intermediate option between the 3070 and 3080 become reality and what AMD rolls out later this week.

Asus announced several new Zenbook and Vivobook laptops Monday as part of its Pinnacle of Performance event. Like other PC makers, Asus is updating current models with AMD Ryzen 6000-series and Intel 12th-gen Core processors. And you'll see a lot more OLED displays available for its laptops this year, too. But with Asus, it's always the things you won't find anywhere else that make its announcements stand out. 

Asus has made dual-screen laptops for years now, for example, but it was last year's Zenbook Duo 14 that took the concept from gimmicky to legitimately useful. The new Zenbook Pro 14 Duo OLED refines that model's design while beefing up performance with up to a 12th-gen Intel Core i9-12900H processor and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 Ti graphics. 

The laptop's main display is a 14.5-inch 2.8K 120Hz OLED touchscreen. But when you lift the lid, a secondary 12.7-inch touchscreen rises from the body, tilting up 12 degrees using a redesigned hinge mechanism. The result is reduced visual separation between the two displays and greater airflow. 

The smaller second panel, called the ScreenPad Plus, is useful for just giving you more room to work and communicate. However, Asus software makes it possible to do more such as turn it into a customizable tool panel for Adobe software using its Control Panel app. The display is pen-enabled as well, so it can be used jotting down a quick note or drawing.

The Zenbook Pro 14 Duo OLED is expected to be available soon starting at $2,000. UK and Australia pricing weren't immediately available but the US price converts to approximately £1,615 or AU$2,850.

The Zenbook Pro 16X OLED has a keyboard that raises for comfort and cooling.

Joining the Duo is the Zenbook Pro 16X OLED. Instead of a second display, this model has a keyboard that raises 14.5mm giving it a 7-degree tilt for more comfortable typing. But it also increases airflow, which made it possible to put in up to a 12th-gen Intel Core i9-12900H processor and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 graphics. 

Below the keyboard is a haptic touchpad that's 84% larger than its predecessor's. It's paired with an updated Asus Dial, a rotary controller that can be used for anything from controlling volume to making tool adjustments in Adobe apps. The 16-inch 4K 60Hz OLED HDR pen-enabled touchscreen will meet the needs of creatives, too. 

No release date was announced for the Zenbook Pro 16X OLED but pricing is expected to start at $2,600.

Just last week, Acer announced a bunch of new gaming PCs and accessories, but it apparently held back something for Computex 2018, which kicked off in Taipei today. 

The company's new 17.3-inch Predator Helios 500 gaming notebook and Predator Orion 5000 and Nitro 50 desktops will be available with AMD Ryzen 7 processors as well as options for AMD Radeon discrete graphics. These are in addition to Intel and Nvidia configurations previously announced. 

Options for the Helios 500 will include up to a second-gen AMD Ryzen 7 2700 processor and AMD Radeon RX Vega graphics with 8GB of second-generation high-bandwidth memory. The full HD-resolution display will feature a 144Hz refresh rate and support for Radeon FreeSync that eliminates blur and tearing during gameplay. Those are in addition to versions with up to a new hexa-core Intel Core i9+ 8950HK processor with Intel Optane memory support and overclocking along with an overclockable 8GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 GPU.

The Orion 5000 desktop will come with second-gen AMD Ryzen 7 2700X processors paired with the latest AMD B450 chipset and up to an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 GPU. The more entry-level Nitro 50 will offer the same 2700X processors, but graphics options of AMD Radeon RX 580 GPUs or up to Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GPUs.

The Predator Helios 500 will be available in the US in August starting at $2,199 (approximately AU$2,900 and £1,650) while the Predator Orion 5000 and Acer Nitro 50 will follow in September starting at $1,499 and $899, respectively, which coverts to roughly AU$1,980 and £1,125 and AU$1,190 and £675.

Acer Next May 2022: 3D Screens, Predator Gaming Laptops and More

Acer Next, the company's May announcement event, dropped a multitude of products on us -- mostly a raft of refreshes. We saw updates to existing models including the Spin 5, Swift 3 and Predator gaming laptops with current-generation processors and some design tweaks. One move in particular stands out, though: Acer's expanding its SpatialLabs technology to bring glasses-free stereoscopic 3D to games. It'll do this with a 15-inch 4K display, which will be offered as a standalone monitor and built in to one of its Predator Helios 300 gaming laptops.

SpatialLabs launched at last year's May Acer Next in conjunction with new hardware in Acer's Concept D line of creator-focused gear and an Unreal Engine developer program. Hence, new games supporting the technology. "Support" means the developer has created a profile for the game, which loads when you launch it via the new TrueGame application, along with the ancillary files necessary to render properly to the display. An ancillary app, SpatialLabs Go, will allow the computer to render stereoscopic 3D from most content that can be displayed full screen. The content is rendered to deliver the impression that nearer parts of the scene appear in front of the display (rather than rendering as if further objects were behind it, as the illustration above implies).

Acer says more than 50 games will support the display, dubbed Acer SpatialLabs View, when it becomes available this summer starting at $1,099. New games will be added to the roster on a regular basis. It doesn't sound like a display you'd want for fast-moving games, given its 60Hz refresh rate and response time of up to a whopping 30ms. (For comparison, a decent response time for a gaming monitor is closer to 5ms or less.) There will also be a commercially oriented version of the monitor, the SpatialLabs View Pro, intended for kiosks and other sales and marketing uses.

The monitor can run off battery, though for how long we don't know. The battery does explain why it's relatively heavy -- at roughly 3.3 pounds (1.5 kilograms), it weighs as much as a laptop. Other specs include a maximum brightness of 400 nits, typically 323 nits, and 100% coverage of the Adobe RGB gamut.

You'll find the screen in the Predator Helios 300 SpatialLabs Edition, which also gets a bump up to a maximum of an Intel Core i9-12900H CPU, 32GB DDR5-4800 and PCIe 4 SSD. It's slated to ship in October starting at $3,400.

Acer has also added a 16-inch model to its Predator Triton 300 SE line, and brings the thin-ish 14-inch model up to date with 12th-gen Intel Core processors, LPDDR5-5200 RAM, PCIe 4 SSD and new display choices, including OLED. The smaller model ships in July starting at $1,600, and the 16-inch model will be available in August, starting at $1,750. 

The company has also revved its gaming monitors, bringing the 27-inch XB273 up to 4K at 160Hz with DisplayHDR 600 certification and the Nitro XV272 up to 1440p 144Hz (overclocked to 170Hz on DisplayPort) with a peak brightness of 400 nits. Both are expected to ship between July and September, with the Predator starting at $999 and the Nitro at $449.

Acer's eco-friendly product line gets some new members, adding a 14-inch laptop with a Full HD screen and a new blue choice to the existing Aspire Vero 15-inch option, bumping both to 12th-gen Intel Core processors. A 24-inch Vero Veriton All-in-One desktop, 24- and 27-inch monitors (the larger model has a KVM switch and supports power delivery), keyboard and projector join the the lineup, expanding Acer's use of post-consumer recycled plastic to a wider variety of products.

The Veriton desktop incorporates 30% PCR materials, and some components are upgradable. It has a popup webcam, up to 12th-gen Core i9 and GeForce MX550 processors, supports up to 64GB DDR4 memory and takes advantage of some of the Intel chipset updates, such as Wi-Fi 6E.

For low-end projecting, the Vero PD2325W offers a low 1,280x800-pixel resolution and low light output of 2,200 lumens. It does have auto keystone correction (to fix vertical distortion) and can be mounted to the ceiling.

Spin and Swift and more

A new version of the Swift 3 has a 2,880x1,800-pixel OLED display (DisplayHDR True Black 500 certified) and upgrades to an H-series 12th-gen Core i7 processor -- that's the higher power CPU line -- and upgrades to LPDDR5 memory and PCIe 4 SSD.

In addition to a slight redesign that has much more attractive, thinner bezels on the screen, the 14-inch Spin 5's display gets a minor boost in resolution to 2,560x1,600 pixels. It also works with the upgraded Acer Active Stylus (Wacom AES 2.0), and gets bumped to the latest generation of core processors, LPDDR5 memory, PCIe 4 SSD, Wi-Fi 6E and more. The Spin 3's bezels have also gotten a bit narrower and now uses 12th-gen Intel CPUs as well.

Acer also updated the $750 Chromebook Spin 714's screen and components to keep it fresh and competitive, and launched a rugged tablet, the $400 Chromebook Tab 510. The 10.1-inch tablet is built on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 Compute Platform, with a 1,920x1,00-pixel screen, 5- and 8-megapixel MIPI cameras (front and rear) and includes a dockable stylus. Acer claims an 11-hour battery life and says it meets MIL-STD 810H standards for durability. The Chromebook Spin 714 ships in August while the Tab will be available in July.

The company's lightweight business laptops, the TravelMate P4 and TravelMate Spin P4 and the more workhorse P2, jump to the vPro versions of its 12th-gen CPUs as well as AMD's Ryzen Pro (up to Ryzen 7) equivalents; you'll have both 14- and 16-inch options for the P4. The P4 and P2 also incorporate more PCR plastic into their construction.

They'll all become available in the third quarter of 2022. The P4 models start at $1,099, the Spin P4s at $1,199, and the Spin P2 at $899.

And finally, Acer boosted its Concept D 5 and 5 Pro laptops and Concept D 500 and 100 desktops with the latest generation Intel Core CPUs and Nvidia RTX GPUs. The compact, entry-level Concept D 100 still uses last-gen T series GPUs, however, and neither has been bumped to DDR5. And it looks like only the D 5 will be available in the US, at least for now; it ships in August starting at $2,500.
