The verdict is in, and frankly, it's not what we expected: Nvidia's GeForce RTX 2080 and 2080 Ti graphics cards may be powerful, but they may also be a tough sell for discerning PC gamers.

We read through pages and pages of reviews so you don't have to, and here are the major takeaways so far:

GeForce RTX 2080 Ti

  • The $1,200 GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Founder's Edition is pretty clearly the fastest video card in the world -- it's even faster than the $3,000 Titan V in most games, according to Tom's Hardware.
  • Aside from ridiculous juggernauts like the Titan V, it's the first card where reviewers were consistently able to play the most demanding games at a smooth 60 frames per second on a 4K monitor with maxed out graphics settings -- no tweaking necessary.
  • But at $1,200 -- or $1,000 when Nvidia's partners sell their own versions -- who's to say it's not a ridiculous juggernaut too? Nvidia's last flagship GeForce card started at $700. You're paying Titan money for Titan-grade performance here. And you could build an entire gaming PC for that money.
  • It consumes more power than previous-gen video cards -- AnandTech measured 50 watts more under load, and Ars Technica had to upgrade its computer's power supply in order to plug in a VR headset too.

GeForce RTX 2080

  • Get this: The $800 GeForce RTX 2080 Founder's Edition isn't faster in most games than the $700 GTX 1080 Ti from March 2017. In game after game, reviewers found the new card neck and neck with a 1-and-a-half-year-old GPU. And sometimes, the older GPU won. Ars Technica called the eerily similar results "a serious case of déjà vu."
  • The RTX 2080 is roughly 35 percent faster than the GTX 1080, depending on which reviewer you ask -- but entry-level GTX 1080 cards can now easily be found south of $500. It's just not a fair comparison, even once $700 OEM versions of the RTX 2080 begin to ship.
  • It's not fast enough to play all of today's games at 4K and 60fps with maxed settings. If you don't want to mess with settings, it's probably a little more suited to a 2,560x1,440 (aka 1440p) monitor.

Both cards

  • Nvidia didn't provide reviewers with a single game that had enabled RTX-exclusive features like raytracing and AI rendering, so the benefits of those are totally theoretical right now.
  • Ditto the included VirtualLink port for single-cable VR headsets. No headsets support it yet.
  • If you're running a 1080p monitor, both of these GPUs may be overkill -- many of these games are still CPU limited, meaning that even with the fastest desktop processors, your games can't run any faster than a certain frame rate.
  • The new Founder's Edition dual-fan cooler appears to make these cards run slightly but notably quieter than previous generations. However, that may only apply to the Founder's Edition cards with their $100 to $200 premium.

A lot of PC hardware reviewers came to a lot of conclusions about Nvidia's new graphics cards, but these quotes rang particularly true:

Tom's Hardware: "If you aspire to game at 4K and don't want to choose between smooth frame rates and maxed-out graphics quality, GeForce RTX 2080 Ti is the card to own."

PC Perspective: "Until we see substantial software adoption of features like DLSS and real-time ray tracing in PC games, or the GTX 1080 Ti disappears from the retail channel, it would be impossible for me to recommend the RTX 2080 over the GTX 1080 Ti."

Ars Technica: "$1,200 is a lot of money to guarantee locked 4K/60fps performance at near-highest settings in your favorite PC games, while the wait and additional cost of the RTX 2080 feels like a lot to ask for when the above benchmarks tell us that the 1080 Ti still pretty much packs the same punch."

AnandTech: "[Gamers] will have to think long and hard about paying extra to buy graphics hardware that is priced extra with features that aren't yet applicable to real-world gaming, and yet only provides performance comparable to previous generation video cards."

It's going to be interesting to see if reviewers change their mind when games that support ray tracing arrive -- and when the less-expensive, $600/$500 GeForce RTX 2070 arrives next month.

Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3070 may end up suffering from middle-child syndrome, squeezed between the two ends of Nvidia's GPU spectrum: basic 1440p for a little less or basic 4K/high-frame rate 1440p for a little more. The GeForce RTX 3070 Founders Edition of the $499 (£469, AU$809) graphics card I tested is geared toward high-frame rate/quality 1440p gaming, and delivers similar performance to the RTX 2080 Ti for most uses (but not all), which debuted at $999. The boost over its predecessor, the more expensive RTX 2070 Super, depends upon what you need it to do. 

The release of the 3070 follows the bumpy launch of the $699 RTX 3080 and its $1,500 sibling, the RTX 3090, both experiencing price gouging due to shortages. But rumors have also surfaced about a slightly cheaper RTX 3060 Ti coming soon as well as a new card slotted between the 3070 and 3080. Plus, it's likely we'll get an entry-level 30 series card early next year to feed the mid-$300 buyers. And that doesn't take into account AMD's launch of its ambitious Radeon RX 6000-series "Big Navi" gaming cards that use the same architecture as the upcoming Xbox Series X and S and PS5consoles.

Like the RTX 3080-based graphics cards, the Ampere-generation of the company's GPU architecture achieves playable frame rates in games that use RTX-specific features like ray-tracing and global illumination. Its AI-based upscaling feature, DLSS, lets you finally game at better-than-bare-minimum frame rates without visible degradation in quality. The GPU also lifts performance over predecessors in games that don't take advantage of the whizzy features by about 10% to 20% on average, which is really most games.   

Unlike its higher-end siblings, the 3070 uses older GDDR6 memory and has the same memory bandwidth as the 2070 Super. It still gets some performance boosts thanks to the second-gen ray tracing and third-gen Tensor cores, such as new algorithms and instruction sets that make them a lot more efficient and a switch to an 8nm process size from 12nm. And as is typical, it has increased core counts -- it has a lower ray-tracing core count but the Ampere RT cores are doubled-up over the Turing cores, so technically the 3070 has more. But you won't see the same uplift that the 3080 and 3090 received over earlier models.

It's also significantly less power-hungry than the higher-end cards, roughly the same as before, plus it's the same size as the 2080 Ti. While the 3070 has a similar 12-pin power connector design to the 3080 -- including an adapter in the box -- it still only connects to a single 8-pin block from the power supply. All of that means it's a much simpler upgrade, especially in tight systems. The Founders Edition, at least, ran cool and quiet during my testing, in a system where I swapped it for the 2070 Super.

I have no complaints about the RTX 3070's performance, and it's definitely worth its $499 price tag. But it may not be your best choice for the money. The Ti models generally have more memory and slightly wider data paths than the non-Ti models, which is why you'll find the 11GB 2080 Ti occasionally outperforming the 8GB 3070. It makes sense to wait and see if an RTX 3060 Ti or intermediate option between the 3070 and 3080 become reality and what AMD rolls out later this week.

Another season, another pair of graphics cards you won't be able to find. This time, it's the power couple Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti and 3080 Ti Nvidia announced at Computex 2021. The 3080 Ti will be available June 3 starting at $1,199, while the 3070 Ti ships on June 10, starting at $599. Don't blink or you'll miss them.

The 3080 Ti distinguishes itself from the 3080 with more of everything: more memory (12GB GDDR6X) and more cores everywhere (80 RT cores, 10,240 CUDA cores, 320 Tensor cores). In fact, while it looks like a big leap over the RTX 3080, it looks awfully close to the RTX 3090, including the same hefty 350 watt power draw. The exception is the amount of memory, as the RTX 3090 has 24GB.

On the other hand, the RTX 3070 Ti is specced quite closely to the RTX 3070, with one notable difference. It has the same amount of memory, but uses GDDR6X rather than GDDR6, promising significantly better memory bandwidth.

But despite Nvidia's introduction of cryptomining-optimized cards (its CMP HX) and throttling the mining performance of gaming GPUs (now retronymmed LHR for low hash rate), things still don't look especially promising. For one thing, the company said in its recent earnings call that it expects supply constraints to continue for at least another few months, if not longer. For another, the CMP cards still aren't available in the US. 

Even when the CMP cards finally do become available here, and even if Nvidia can meet the demand for them as it claimed in the earnings call -- they use older production technologies, an older architecture chip and don't need GDDR6 memory, so the supply problems don't overlap with the gaming GPUs -- that doesn't mean the gaming GPU shortage will necessarily ease. Miners can use the gaming GPUs but gamers can't use the mining GPUs, and there's nothing to prevent miners from soaking up all the available supplies, both CMP and LHR, among other potential issues.

And Nvidia pretty much stated during a briefing that there will be stock of its Founders Edition cards, the only cards guaranteed to have the uninflated prices, on the day of launch -- but didn't mention anything about subsequent days. Also, that you'd pretty much have to keep checking. Since supplies will remain tight for a while, prices will remain at scalper-high levels as well. That all sounds status quo to me.

A year after its official launch, Nvidia's GeForce Now cloud gaming service is close to completing its expansion to support every platform. Just last week the beta of the service became available for Chrome on Windows and Mac, and on Thursday the company announced the app will work on Apple Macs that use the new M1 CPU via the Rosetta 2 emulator.

Nvidia's service, which lets you play PC games you own on almost any device, is the first to offer support for the M1. Using the emulator is a half step, however -- it remains to be seen if there'll be any performance hit from having to go through a translation layer. But you always have the alternative of playing under Chrome or Apple's own Safari browser, both of which run natively on the M1.

You'll almost always have a better experience playing via the app than within a browser -- browsers have network overhead that a dedicated app doesn't have to deal with -- but it never hurts to have the option if for some reason you can't install or run the app.

The competition in cloud gaming is heating up, with Microsoft's Xbox game streaming (xCloud)arriving in September, and now Nvidia encroaching on GoogleStadia's turf by adding Chromebooks to GeForce Now's supported platforms. The ability to run on a Chromebook is a great option, and GeForce Now is a slightly more sensible choice than Stadia. It's also easy to use: Just go to play.geforcenow.com, add a game you own that's in Nvidia's supported list, and launch. 

Unlike Stadia, which has a small library of custom-optimized games that you buy specifically to run on its platform, GeForce now is bring-your-own-game. At least if you buy a game on Steam, Epic or Ubisoft, you'll still be able to run it on a PC if Nvidia pulls the plug on the service rather than get stuck with a pile of useless bits. However, I stand by my opinion that you shouldn't buy games exclusively to play with any of these services. They move in and out of the libraries because of licensing deals, and you may yet end up with that pile of useless bits; with GeForce Now, you'd have to buy a PC capable of running the game if it flits out of the library.

You don't necessarily need to buy games, though. There's a large selection of free-to-play games -- nothing that's not free on every platform, but now you can play them on a Chromebook. You can give the $4.99-per-month Founders membership (which entitles you to priority access and longer sessions than the free option) a try with Nvidia's new promotion: six months for $24.95, which is equivalent to a free month. It includes a Season One battle pass for Hyper Scape and some content.

The nice thing is that you can fire up one of the free-to-play games with the free account on your Chromebook and give it a shot at zero cost.   

Now that you can sync your Steam library with GeForce Now, matching Nvidia's list with your library is not longer as onerous as it used to be, but if you have games through Epic Games Store it's really tedious on a Chromebook. That's because there's no EGS launcher for Chromebooks, and you can only see your game library in the launcher, not via the site. It's not Nvidia's fault, but it's Nvidia's problem.

The minimum recommended Chromebook specs aren't those you'd find in a cheap model, despite Nvidia's claim that a $299 model will run GeForce Now "fine": a 7th-gen Intel Core M3 or better (which has integrated Intel HD Graphics 600) and 4GB or more of RAM. Just as with its general network requirements, Nvidia does recommend a wired or 5GHz wireless connection -- that means WiFi 5 (802.11ac) -- and a network connection speed of at least 15Mbps (25Mbps recommended).

Although those are the recommended specifications, Nvidia has tested about 14 Intel-based models so far, some of which fall well below them:

I gave the service a whirl on the Chromebook 715, which falls on the high-end of the performance spectrum. When it works, it works well, and the experience matches playing on the desktop.

But, as usual, beyond a certain point it's not the hardware that holds back the experience; it's your internet connection. And bandwidth is only one factor when playing. The consistency of the connection is even more important, and it's something you can't measure because it changes minute to minute, and it's hard to fix in many situations. That doesn't always translate to poorer gameplay, but it frequently does start glitching the controls.

I'd launch a game when the connection was OK and at least 150Mbps, but by the time the opening screen appeared I'd start getting "spotty connection" warnings on a regular basis. In Observation, the glitchy video and unresponsive camera controls could pass as part of the game. In a platformer like Dead Cells, not so much. So your mileage may vary.

I suspect the problem is crowding on the Wi-Fi channels; there are no lightly used ones among the 20 or so Wi-Fi networks surrounding my apartment and my router. Ethernet is an option, but really inconvenient, which is probably true for a lot of people. This isn't unique to GeForce Now. It happens with all the services for me. But clearly it's an issue, given that Nvidia has a recommended router program for the service.

The other problem is Chromebook screens, which tend to be dim and washed out. They're usually not designed for a great gaming experience or with high contrast the way a phone or higher-end laptop screen is.

The Chromebook version supports all the latest features of GeForce Now, including Highlights, which can automatically record notable gameplay, and FreeStyle, for applying filters to your games. Ansel -- the high-resolution capture tool in Nvidia's drivers -- will be arriving soon in GeForce Now.

If you've got a Chromebook, even one that doesn't meet the minimum specs, it's certainly worth giving it a shot to see how well it works on your particular setup.

Origin PC's Evo-17-S gaming laptop puts the blazing performance of top-end components in a slim, stealthy body, assembled with the personal touch of a custom PC builder. The 17.3-inch laptop is remarkably compact and light at 4.9 pounds (2.2 kilograms) and yet churns out impressive frame rates.

Like the company's gaming desktop builds, you get more control over what goes into the Evo17-S than you would with any of the bigger-name brands. You can even choose what goes on the outside, too. And you get more personal service and support. There are a few opportunities for improvement, but overall the Evo17-S is a big-screen gaming laptop to shortlist, especially if you're after something that's more tailored to your wants.

For the Evo17-S, Origin offers just a few combos of a display, Intel processor and Nvidia graphics processor. The starting configuration, currently priced at $2,416 (£2,203, AU$3,823) pairs a 144Hz 17.3-inch 1080p display, an Intel Core i7-12700H and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti. For $500 more, you can bump the graphics up to an RTX 3080 Ti or, for $800 more, you get the 3080 Ti with a Core i9-12900H CPU and a 240Hz 1440p display with 100% sRGB color space. 

From there you choose the RAM -- 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR5 -- and up to two, 2TB PCIe NVMe solid-state drives. This is where Origin stands out from the competition. While gaming laptops from others might let you pick the amount of storage you get, they don't offer a selection of brands, sizes and speeds to meet your needs and budget. Plus, with more laptops being made with the RAM soldered onboard, it's nice to have the option to add more down the road. 

This laptop is expensive, going over $4,000 fully loaded. But other gaming laptops similarly configured from Alienware and Razer are equally pricey.

Origin also provides free labor on RAM and storage upgrades if you send in the laptop. In addition to its stellar reputation for hands-on support, Origin also offers a wider array of configuration options in its system-building tool, so you should be able to hit your dream specs pretty closely from the start. This includes parts from its parent company, Corsair. Parts are covered with a one-year replacement warranty and buyers get 24/7 US-based tech support.

Performance that doesn't disappoint

With a top-notch processor and high-end graphics chip, it's not a surprise the Evo17-S can hit some high frame rates even on newer demanding games. Whether you want to have a more immersive gaming experience with the 1440p-resolution display and details set to high or drop the resolution and detail settings to really use the display's 240Hz refresh rate, the component combination in my review system can handle it. (Our benchmark test results are at the end of this review.)

The one minor performance ding would be the Corsair MP600 Pro SSD that was in my system that was slightly slower than WD and Samsung drives in other gaming laptops we've tested recently. It's unlikely to be a performance difference you'd notice in use, but it might be worth paying a little extra for the Samsung 970 Evo Plus or 980 Pro SSDs if you want the best speeds.

Predictably, a laptop this thin and powerful does get hot when you're gaming or doing anything else demanding. The fans do get loud but keep both the left and right sides of the laptop cool for your hands. The only place it gets hot on top is in the middle from above the keyboard down to the top of the touchpad.

Remarkably, battery life is pretty good. Gaming should still be done when it's plugged in. But if you want to kick back and stream some video or get some office work done away from an outlet, you can. On our streaming video test, it lasted 5 hours, 38 minutes. Some power management and reducing the screen brightness below 50% will stretch the battery time further. 

The display is nice, too

The base model of the Evo17-S has a 144Hz 1080p display. I can't speak to the quality of that display, unfortunately, but the higher-end 1440p 240Hz screen in my review laptop was quite good. Bright with good color and contrast, the display covered 96% sRGB, 68% NTSC and 73% AdobeRGB and P3 color spaces and its brightness at 100% measured 420 nits. 

At its highest brightness, though, I did notice backlight bleed at the corners in dark game scenes, especially at the bottom of the panel. This is not uncommon and not a deal-breaker for me, however, it might be for some potential buyers.

I have a few more minor criticisms. For instance, the lack of per-key RGB backlighting on the keyboard -- a feature you'd find on other gaming laptops at this price. The keyboard does have RGB lights, but you can only set them to solid colors or a handful of different patterns. (There's a light bar at the front edge of the laptop as well.) I'm not a fan of the flat keycaps, but that's personal preference and in general, the keyboard's feel and layout are just fine. 

Also, the speakers are loud but they sound thin. There are separate audio-out and mic-in jacks on the right side, though, so get yourself some speakers or a headset to plug in instead. Similarly, the built-in webcam is 1080p, which does give you more detail than the 720p webcams that were once standard. Even in good lighting, though, there's visible image noise so you may still want to use a discrete webcam. With plenty of ports on the left, right and rear of the laptop, you can connect multiple displays and accessories.

It's worth mentioning, too, that although the sturdy laptop comes in a stealthy black with a metal lid, soft-touch keyboard deck and a plastic bottom, you can opt to have Origin apply one of 11 prints to the lid for an additional $65. I like the all-black look, though, and makes it more office-friendly. 

Regardless of what you choose, you're still getting a nice-looking thin-and-light design packed with as much performance as you want to pay for and the personal service and support of a custom PC builder.

HP Spectre x360 16 Review: Big, Luxurious 2-in-1 for Creatives

The HP Spectre x360 16 doesn't have "pro" in its name, but it deserves to. It's not a business laptop, so you won't find an Intel vPro processor or IT management features. However, its premium features, beautiful OLED display, good looks and speedy performance are just about perfect for anyone looking for a versatile laptop with an awesome work-play-and-create design -- as long as you don't mind the size and weight.

Configurations for the HP Spectre x360 16 start at $1,640 while my review model is $2,030. A similar configuration to what I tested is £1,900 in the UK and AU$3,799 in Australia. All models include an 11th-gen Intel Core i7-11390H processor, at least 16GB of memory and a 512GB SSD; memory can be bumped up to 32GB (it's onboard so you have to add before you buy) and up to a 2TB SSD. The base model has integrated Intel graphics but an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 discrete GPU is also an option and is required if you want it configured with a stunning 16-inch 3,840x 2,400-pixel OLED touch display.

HP, like most other PC makers, has moved toward taller 3:2- or 16:10-ratio displays and away from 16:9 widescreens; the 16-inch display on the Spectre x360 16 is 16:10. Combined with thinner bezels framing the display, it gives you more vertical space to work with little impact on the laptop's overall footprint. 

With a trimmed-down chassis, too, this means you can have a 16-inch laptop that's roughly the same size of an older 15.6-inch widescreen laptop. While the OLED is the top choice, it does add to the cost, especially since it has to be paired with the RTX 3050 graphics, and can shorten battery life. HP said with integrated graphics and the base 3,072x1,920-pixel IPS display, the laptop can get up to 17 hours. I reached 9 hours, 45 minutes on our video-streaming battery test with the OLED display.

The 16-inch size is rare for a two-in-one and makes the Spectre x360 16 more of a desktop replacement than an ultraportable (it has the ports to accommodate a desk setup without a hub, too). It's not too heavy at 4.5 pounds (2 kilograms), although it's definitely not a toss-in-your-bag-and-forget-it's-there weight, either. The laptop requires a big power supply for full performance, too, but it can be charged with a smaller USB-C charger as well.

The smooth, sturdy body -- made from recycled aluminum -- and additional screen space compared to a 13- or 14-inch is worth the extra heft, though, especially if you're splitting time between working from home and hot-desking or hoteling at an office mixed with occasional pit-stops for coffee-shop conferences. The Spectre x360 16 can of course be used as a laptop, but the larger two-in-one design makes it good for giving presentations, using it as a whiteboard, sketching or notetaking with the included pen or kicking back and watching videos or gaming. 

The configuration I tested is almost fully loaded and includes a high-quality OLED touch display that's factory calibrated and covers 100% sRGB, 100% P3, 97% Adobe RGB and 95% NTSC color gamuts with a max brightness of 383 nits according to our tests. If you're doing color-critical work, this display is what you want (though it's not bright enough to fight reflections outdoors).

For the $2,030 price, the performance is somewhat underwhelming when looked at away from the rest of the package. In fact, price is really my only hang-up with recommending this laptop. That's simply because you can find better performance for less money with something like the Dell Inspiron 16 Plus

The Dell is a clamshell, not a two-in-one, and while its features, body and display are excellent for the money, they don't compare to the HP. But if you're looking for a 16-inch laptop that's closer to $1,000 than $2,000, consider the Inspiron 16 Plus. The HP might not be a bargain, but it does deliver a more premium experience. Also, in my anecdotal testing, which included editing raw image files with DxO PureRaw 2.0, performance was speedy and smooth. And it can even do some gaming if you dial back on the quality settings. 

All the little extras 

The increase in people video-chatting on their laptops during the pandemic really shone a spotlight on how poor most built-in webcams are. For the Spectre x360 16, HP put in a 5-megapixel camera and some software to help you look your best. HP GlamCam touches up your skin, teeth and eyes, for example, while Lighting Correction adjusts your video for poor lighting conditions. There's also Auto Frame, which uses the extra resolution to track your face if you move off-center on camera. It's a little slow to respond compared to Apple's Center Stage. However, HP said its slight delay is intentional so it doesn't constantly adjust, which makes sense -- you wouldn't want it jumping around for every little movement.

Also, along with a privacy shutter to block the webcam and mic mute button, you can also have your computer lock automatically if you walk away from the laptop. It will dim the display, too, when you stop looking directly at it. HP also added a setting to have the display blur if it sees someone shoulder surfing behind you as you work. 

There are also things like Wi-Fi 6E for the fastest wireless performance; an IR camera for face recognition, as well as a fingerprint reader to simplify sign-ins; and helpful software for managing system performance and content creation. Even if you're not a creative, all of the Spectre x360 16's features add up to a great two-in-one experience. It's something you likely won't mind working on every day. And with the additional graphics boost, you can do a little gaming in your downtime, too.
