Disney World Reveals New Boo Bash Halloween Party

Disney World reveals new Boo Bash Halloween party

Disney World reveals new Boo Bash Halloween party

Disney has announced its plans for this Halloween, with Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party being replaced by the new Boo Bash at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Boo Bash will run certain nights from Aug. 10 until Oct. 31, from 9 p.m. until midnight, Disney said Friday.

The three-hour ticketed event will take place after the park close and include special themed music, decorations, food offerings and entertainment. Attractions and rides will be open for the after-hours event, with adults and kids permitted to wear costumes for the Halloween party.

Trick-or-treating should be making a return, with Disney saying guests will "get their fill of Halloween candy," while character cavalcades will be featured throughout the park as parades continue to be pushed back due to social distancing requirements around the pandemic. The annual Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party was canceled in 2020 at Magic Kingdom due to COVID-19, and with the theme parks still subject to public health restrictions, Boo Bash appears to be a safer way of celebrating.

As Disney celebrates the halfway point to Halloween this year, it's also unveiled new merchandise including Cruella-themed toys, Haunted Mansion accessories and Disney Villain clothing. Disney will also be hosting a halfway to Halloween live TikTok event on May 8.

Hailee Steinfeld finally confirms she's in the new Marvel Hawkeye series

It's finally official: Hailee Steinfeld is playing Kate Bishop in Marvel's Disney Plus Hawkeye series. The actor tweeted the confirmation, after a series of set photos showing her in the young archer's signature purple costume made the rounds online, removing any surprise to the announcement.

"Incredibly excited to officially share this with the world..." Steinfeld tweeted Thursday, her announcement coinciding with Disney's massive investor presentation, where new Marvel movies and release dates for Disney Plus series were revealed.

Steinfeld initially denied being cast as Kate Bishop, who's set to take over the Hawkeye mantle from Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton. But the string of set photos pretty much let the cat out of the bag.

Here's another look at Steinfeld on the Hawkeye set, captured earlier this week.

It's been a busy time for Hawkeye news. On the casting front, Florence Pugh (from Black Widow), Vera Farmiga, Tony Dalton, Fra Free, Alaqua Cox and Zahn McClarnon were announced as cast members last week. Farmiga (The Conjuring, Bates Motel) will reportedly play Kate's mother, Eleanor Bishop.

Renner joined the picture party, posting last week on Instagram a snap of himself, Steinfeld and Lucky the Pizza Dog, aka Kate Bishop's canine sidekick, strolling around New York City.

Earlier the same day, Twitter user cosmic brought us a similar look at Steinfeld, Pizza Dog and Renner.

Steinfeld resembles Jessica Jones more than Kate Bishop here, but XRealm Matthewstweeted pictures from what appears to be a Brooklyn subway set, featuring Steinfeld in Bishop's signature purple.

Renner, aka the original Hawkeye from The Avengers movies, confirmed shooting had begun with a snap of his Clint Barton-labeled chair on set. "Ms Bishop ... we need you!" he posted last week on Instagram. Thanks to a video and not-so-clear images (both via Murphy's Multiverse), we already knew filming had been underway.

But let's focus on the real star of the show. Lucky the Pizza Dog leads the way in the subway, pulling Steinfeld along by his (or her) leash.

Who is Pizza Dog? Pizza Dog is a character in the comics, first appearing when Barton saves him. The golden retriever's tags reveal his name to be Arrow, but Clint renames him Lucky. An issue devoted entirely to Lucky's point of view reveals he calls himself Pizza Dog, simply because of his love of a New York slice.

Add Pizza Dog to the list of greatest Marvel characters you've never heard of. He was revealed to be in the series via concept art from a 12-minute Disney Plus featurette called Marvel Studios: Expanding the Universe that was released in mid-November.

If you weren't excited for the new series, expected to arrive on Disney Plus in fall, 2021, an adorable pup should be a draw. Otherwise, tune in to see Kate Bishop take over the mantle of Hawkeye under the tutorage of master archer Clint Barton.

'The Hunger Games' Prequel Movie: What You Need to Know

'The Hunger Games' Prequel Movie: What You Need to Know

The Hunger Games movie franchise is expanding with a prequel film called The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, based on a 2020 book of the same name by Suzanne Collins. While the Lionsgate flick is still awhile off, a flurry of casting announcements in May and June along with a striking, ice-coated teaser have stoked excitement for the games to begin.

On Aug. 15, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that award-winning actress Viola Davis will appear alongside previously announced stars Peter Dinklage, Rachel Zegler, Tom Blyth, Josh Andrés Rivera and Hunter Schafer.

The film adaptation is scheduled to hit theaters in November 2023, roughly eight years after Mockingjay Part 2, and follows a younger Coriolanus Snow (Blyth) who mentors District 12 tribute Lucy Gray Baird (Zegler). A refresh: We know Snow from past movies as the ruthless president portrayed by Donald Sutherland. The original films brought in more than $3 billion globally, according to Lionsgate. Here's more on the cast, the plot and when we'll be making our official return to Panem.

What is The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes about?

Collins' novel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set 64 years before the events of the initial trilogy. According to Lionsgate, the movie will focus in part on the lead up to the 10th Hunger Games. (For reference, Katniss volunteered as tribute for the 74th.) Teenage Snow, not yet the dictatorial ruler he'd turn out to be, senses some opportunity in Baird, the tribute he's given to mentor.

Here's the full Lionsgate synopsis: "Years before he would become the tyrannical president of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, the girl tribute from impoverished District 12. But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem's attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor."

It continues: "Uniting their instincts for showmanship and newfound political savvy, Snow and Lucy Gray's race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird, and who is a snake."

The fifth film in the Hunger Games franchise will be directed by Francis Lawrence, director of Catching Fire and both Mockingjay films. Michael Lesslie (screenwriter for 2015's Macbeth and 2016's Assassin's Creed) wrote the latest version of the script, working off a draft by Collins and Catching Fire screenwriter Michael Arndt.

The first teaser for Songbirds and Snakes

I have to hand it to the people behind this clip -- it doesn't reveal a smidgen of the actual movie, but it still sucked me back into the world of The Hunger Games. We see what looks like an animated version of the book's cover design. A songbird and snake are covered in frost, but the ice breaks off, revealing a gold coat underneath. "You're invited to return to the games," the onscreen text says. "In 2023, the world will discover who is a songbird and who is a snake."

Who's in the cast?

The Hunger Games prequel film stars Tom Blyth as young Snow and Rachel Zegler as Baird. Blyth plays the titular role in Epix's 2022 Western series Billy the Kid and appeared in an episode of HBO series The Gilded Age. Zegler is known for her starring role in Steven Spielberg's 2021 West Side Story adaptation. She's also set to play Snow White in Disney's live-action version of the animated classic and will be in Shazam sequel Fury of the Gods.

Academy Award-winning actress Viola Davis will play Volumnia Gaul, the villainous head gamemaker of the 10th Hunger Games. "Dr. Gaul is as cruel as she is creative and as fearsome as she is formidable," director Francis Lawrence said. Emmy-winning Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage will portray the dean of the Academy, Casca Highbottom. According to Lawrence, the dean is "the austere and vindictive face of the games."

They'll be joined by Josh Andrés Rivera, another West Side Story star, who's playing Snow's close friend and fellow tribute mentor Sejanus Plinth, and Hunter Schafer, who's known for her role on the HBO show Euphoria. Schafer is playing Snow's cousin Tigris. Jason Schwartzman, who's appeared in several Wes Anderson films, will play Lucretius "Lucky" Flickerman, a Cesar-Flickerman ancestor and host of the 10th Hunger Games.

When will it premiere?

The movie arrives Nov. 17, 2023. That means there's time to pick up a copy of the book if you're interested -- or you could skip the training and head straight into the 10th games. May the odds be ever in your favor.

'Prey' Ending and Cool Post-Credits Predator Tease Explained

'Prey' Ending and Cool Post-Credits Predator Tease Explained

Prey  hit Hulu in the US and Disney Plus Star elsewhere in the world earlier this month. The movie brings the Predator series back to 1719 and sees one of the alien hunters going up against Comanche Nation tribespeople like Naru (Amber Midthunder). Also, it's absolutely excellent and ranks among the best entries in the series.

"More sci-fi movies should take this kind of grounded approach, and this franchise should just pit its alien hunters against humans in magnificently realized historical settings from now on," I wrote in my CNET review. "For now though, stick around and give Prey a watch."

This adventure builds to a memorable finale, hints at what happened afterward in its beautiful animated credits sequences and includes an awesome reference to 1990's Predator 2. Let's dive in -- but be warned: This stuff will make you a SPOILER Tyrannosaurus, just like me.

spoiler alert

We can kill it

Having seen her fellow Comanche Nation warriors and the deeply unpleasant French poachers slaughtered by the Predator, Naru lures the beast into a trap in the dark forest. She kills it using a combination of her knowledge of the environment, the weapons she's gathered (including a familiar flintlock pistol with the engraving "Raphael Adolini 1715" -- more on that later) and the Predator's own tech.

Covered in the alien's luminous green blood, she brings its decapitated head back to camp and is honored as a hunter by her tribe. It mirrors the sequence in which her brother Taabe (Dakota Beavers) did so with the lion earlier in the movie, after she failed to. In killing the Predator that took Taabe's life, Naru has proved herself to be the tribe's biggest badass.

And they all lived happily ever after. Except...

Predator revenge?

We get a supercool animated recap of the movie's events over the first section of the credits, with one additional wrinkle. The final image pans to show a Predator ship coming out of storm clouds over Naru's camp, implying that the aliens attacked again. Which doesn't seem sporting of the Predators -- you lost guys, go home.

A Predator crouches in the background as Naru hides behind a tree in Prey

Naru may have faced the Predators again.

20th Century Studios

It's unclear how these events played out -- perhaps we'll find out in a sequel sometime -- or when they took place. It's possible that they left Naru in peace and the image is a metaphor for later hunts involving humans, since the original Predator and its sequels reveal that the aliens are kinda obsessed with battling us.

That might be wishful thinking though, since the flintlock pistol Naru got from murdered French poacher Raphael (Bennett Taylor) offers us a clue. It's on her belt when she returns to camp, but fans will know it shows up later in the series.

Raphael Adolini 1715

In Predator 2, which takes place in 1997, LAPD Lt. Mike Harrigan (Danny Glover) and the main Predator -- known as the City Hunter -- battle on one of the aliens' ships. After the human triumphs, a bunch of other Predators decloak and seem ready to murder him.

Instead, one of them flings him a gift -- Raphael's 282-year-old flintlock pistol.

"Take it," the Predator growls to an astounded Harrigan.

At the very least, this proves that the Predators took back this gun at some point in the intervening years. They could have killed Naru (since the credits image suggests they attacked her again), allied with her (humans are accepted by Predators in the Alien vs. Predator comics and the 2004 movie) or just retrieved it after she died.

Prey apparently overwrites the events of the 1996 comic Predator: 1718, in which one of the aliens teams up with a pirate captain to battle his mutinous crew. The movie's Raphael, the only one of the French poachers who doesn't act like a total dirtbag, is presumably the one whose name is engraved on the weapon.

The Alien vs. Predator comics were originally published by Dark Horse, but the license transferred to Marvel in the wake of parent company Disney nabbing the Alien and Predator rights after its 2019 Fox acquisition. They aren't currently available to read digitally, but Marvel might rerelease them like it did with Dark Horse's Star Wars comics.

Marvel also has a new Predator comic series about a human hunting the Predator who slaughtered her family. Only one issue has been released so far, but it's atmospheric and intriguing.

The U.K. wants to be "a global hub for cryptoasset technology and investment."

HM Treasury

The British government announced plans on Monday to make the UK a global hub for investment and tech in crypto assets. The UK is looking to make stablecoins a valid form of payment, and the Royal Mint will issue an NFT to promote Britain's crypto push. "The measures we've outlined today will help to ensure firms can invest, innovate and scale up in this country," UK finance minister Rishi Sunak said in the announcement. This comes just weeks after the country's financial regulator declared all bitcoin ATMs in the UK illegal and ordered them to shut down. The country's advertising authority has also been cracking down on crypto ads in the country for failing to highlight risks associated with cryptocurrency investing.

US authorities confiscated 34 million worth of cryptocurrency that was allegedly made from selling illicit items and stolen accounts from online services, including HBO, Netflix and Uber, on the dark web, the Justice Department said Monday. The DOJ says this is one of the largest cryptocurrency forfeiture actions the US has ever filed. The announcement didn't specify the identity of the south Florida resident the cryptocurrency was confiscated from or if the DOJ was pursuing further legal action.

Robinhood's cryptocurrency wallet is now available for eligible users who previously signed up for the waiting list. The wallet's release was announced by Robinhood CPO Aparna Chennapragada on Thursday at the Bitcoin conference in Miami. The Robinhood crypto wallet allows transferring cryptocurrency into external wallets with daily withdrawals capped at $2,999 total and 10 transactions. However, residents in Hawaii, New York and Nevada are not eligible to sign up, due to state regulations. Robinhood has been a subject of controversy since the company's role in the GameStop stock saga.

An NFT collection from ESPN and Tom Brady was released Wednesday in concert with the Tom Brady documentary series 'Man in the Arena: Tom Brady' arriving on Hulu and Disney Plus. The NFTs feature ESPN magazine covers of Brady, range from $100 to $500 and have already sold out. Brady, along with his wife, Gisele Bündchen, previously took an equity stake in the cryptocurrency exchange FTX and released a commercial for the crypto company.

NFT stick figures are selling for thousands of dollars

OpenSea

Over $100 million in cryptocurrency has been spent on 'mfers,' an NFT collection featuring drawings of stick figures in front of color backgrounds. Recently, the least expensive NFT in the collection was 3.97 ether, or around $14,000, and the collection's simple art is very much on purpose. "Underlying mfers' meme art is, hilariously, an argument about intellectual property," says CNET Senior Writer Daniel Van Boom.

First mainstream video game to use in-game NFTs will end new content

ubisoftquartz-reveal-1920x1080.png
Ubisoft

Ubisoft became the first big video game developer to integrate NFTs into mainstream video games when the company introduced 'digits' in Ghost Recon Breakpoint earlier this year, a move that didn't go over well with much of the game's fanbase. On April 5, only a few months post-integration, Ubisoft announced it is ending new content for the game. However, Ubisoft is looking to hire more blockchain-related roles at the company and reportedly wants to put NFTs in future games, so gamers can probably expect to see NFTs in upcoming Ubisoft titles.

Thanks for reading. We'll be back with plenty more next week. In the meantime, check out this cautionary tale from Farnoosh Torabi on how bitcoin blackmailers tried to steal from her dad's E-Trade account.
