Facebook Parent Meta to Settle Cambridge Analytica Lawsuit

Facebook parent company Meta has agreed to settle a privacy lawsuit tied to 2018's headline-grabbing Cambridge Analytica scandal, according to court papers filed Friday.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, ex-Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg and current COO Javier Olivan had been scheduled to provide testimony in the case sometime during the next month.

The Cambridge Analytica scandal erupted following news that the now-defunct consultancy may have misused the data of nearly 90 million Facebook users for targeted political ads during the UK's Brexit referendum campaign and the 2016 US presidential election. The consultancy worked on Donald Trump's presidential campaign.

The scandal led to Zuckerberg testifying before Congress about Facebook's privacy policies. It also led to a $5 billion fine from the US Federal Trade Commission, part of a settlement between Facebook and the agency over an FTC investigation into the matter.

Under the FTC settlement, Facebook agreed to create an independent privacy committee, Zuckerberg was required to certify the company's behavior, and the social network was ordered to build more privacy protections into its platforms.

Both Facebook and Cambridge Analytica, which shut down in 2018, have denied any wrongdoing.

Friday's filing didn't provide financial or other details about the settlement of the privacy lawsuit, which was filed on behalf of Facebook users. The suit sought class-action status and asked for damages to be awarded to the plaintiffs, as well as injunctive relief.

Emailed for additional information on Saturday, neither Meta nor the plaintiffs had a comment.

The parties have jointly asked the court for a 60-day stay while they finalize a written settlement agreement.

The Best 3D Printer Resin

The Best 3D Printer Resin

Some of the best 3D printers available right now use UV resin rather than filament to produce models. These printers tend to produce smaller, more detailed models than the larger FDM printers and can be used to make board game miniatures and even fine jewelry and dentistry.

These printers use a special type of UV resin that comes in a variety of colors and chemical compositions, each of which can create a different type of end result. A lot of them are specialty resins that you aren't likely to need every day but it can get complicated when you are searching for the right material. We've put together this helpful list of the best resins for you to choose from. The list will get updated as more resins are tested by our team.

Siraya Tech

Siraya Tech Fast has been the perfect balance of price per gallon and functionality. There are cheaper resins, but a lot of them tend to split or become sticky if handled improperly. Fast has been my go-to for the last few years and never lets me down when it comes to reliability.

I also use it for all of my resin 3D printer reviews so I know what each printer can handle. The smoky gray color is my favorite but there are some amazing colors to choose from.

Sunlu

When you are just starting out it's helpful to buy a bulk of inexpensive resins to get your collection started. This four-pack of 500g bottles of resins can be mixed and matched so you can have four different colors, perfect for creating different effects on your models.

Elegoo

While Elegoo touts its plant-based resin as a nonirritant and safe, it is much better than any other resins in that regard. It should still be handled with gloves, respirator and goggles until it is fully cured.

It is, however, cheap, easy to use and gives reliable results for the price. I also like that the smell of resin is almost nonexistent with plant-based resins.

Anycubic

Resin can be quite brittle, and if you are building parts that need to have stress exerted on them, then a resin like the tough resin from Anycubic might help with its longevity.

The tough resin works the same as other resins but allows for some flexibility in the final model. This reduces the chances of it shattering into pieces like dry spaghetti.

NOVA 3D

One of the gold standards of clear resin is actually making it clear. It's really hard to do as UV-cured resin tends to yellow as it cures. NOVA3D has worked hard to make this transparent resin as crystal clear as it can, and while it does yellow if you cure it aggressively, it can give amazing results if you take your time.

Siraya Tech

One of the coolest things I have ever done with a resin printer is to make a cast for jewelry. I used some of this resin to print a Green Lantern ring, then took it to a friend of mine with a kiln. She wrapped it in plaster and then fired it. The resin has a high wax content that helps it melt away, leaving a perfect mold behind for pouring silver.

This resin is not cheap, but if you are interested in making your own jewelry and have access to a kiln, this may be for you.

3D printing resin FAQ

Resin 3D printing is a lot different from other types of additive manufacturing. It can be hazardous, but it is incredibly rewarding if you can get it right. Here are some of the frequently asked questions I get asked about the process.

Is resin actually dangerous?

Short answer: Yes. Long answer: Yes, but if you are safe it's fine. Touching resin with your bare hands can give you chemical burns, and the more you handle it the more likely you are to become allergic to it. I now have to be extra careful, as I get swollen eyes if any liquid resin touches my skin. It's no joke.

Making sure you are wearing the correct protective equipment is of vital importance when using resin. Minimally you should be using nitrile gloves any time you are handling uncured resin, though I would recommend a pair of safety glasses and a respirator to keep the toxins away.

Can I use normal resin from Michaels?

The type of resin you might see at Michaels or other craft stores is not the same as 3D printing resin. Most of those resins are two-part systems that chemically bond when mixed. UV resin cures under, you guessed it, UV light. It only does this under certain wavelengths, though, so not all resins will work. You will need to use resins specially labeled as 3D printing resins.

What happens when I don't 'cure' resin?

There are two main stages of curing for a resin-printed model. The first is the curing that happens inside the printer when the UV light hardens a layer of resin to form the model. The second happens after the model is finished. When you first take the model off the build plate you still need to use gloves to handle it, as the outside will be covered in uncured resin. You will need to wash the model in isopropyl alcohol -- 90% or above is best -- and then cure it one final time in a UV chamber or out in the sun. This will harden the outer surface and make it safe to handle.

If you don't do that second cure, the model will stay sticky and be unsafe to handle. Even covering it in paint won't stop it from being hazardous to you and everything around you, including animals and plants. I would recommend a Wash and Cure system to streamline that process.

Can I print something out of resin that is food-safe?

No. 3D printing resin is never food-safe. While curing makes it safe to handle, it is never 100% and ingesting any amount of resin is a big no-no. The best way to make food-safe products from your resin prints is to make a silicone mold of them and use that to make food-safe resin products instead.

Are there different kinds of resin?

While all UV resins are essentially the same, some have different properties that help you achieve different results. Standard resin is great for a lot of projects but can be quite brittle. Some have a lot of flexibility but don't lend themselves to fine detail, making them great for more practical prints. There are even resins that can be used to make denture molds, so the uses are endless. Siraya Tech Fast -- the best overall resin on our list -- can be mixed with other types from the brand to create different properties so you can buy the cheaper resin and mix it with a small amount of more expensive resin with different properties.

Computer company Framework wants you to upgrade and repair your laptop

studio-image-01
Framework

A common complaint about modern laptops is that they're essentially sealed boxes with no user-serviceable parts inside. A new tech startup, Framework, wants to bring the DIY vibe back to portable PCs with laptops that encourage tinkering and upgrading.

Laptops used to come with removable batteries at least, and sometimes they'd have upgradable RAM, storage or even GPUs. Today, that's the rare exception to the rule, especially with companies such as Apple integrating batteries tightly into the design -- MacBooks are essentially laptop-shaped batteries with tiny bits of computer wrapped around them. Many manufacturers now also solder RAM and storage directly to the motherboard.

Expansion bays allow for swappable ports.

Framework

The Framework Laptop is a 13.5-inch system that the company says was designed to, "empower you with great products you can easily customize, upgrade, and repair, increasing longevity and reducing e-waste in the process."

In this case, that means an expansion card system, socketed storage and RAM and a (hypothetically) replaceable main board and central processing unit. Also, "high-use parts like the battery, screen, keyboard and color-customizable magnetic-attach bezel are easy to replace, with spares available directly through our web store."

It sounds like a great idea, at least on paper, and the four accessory bays can choose between housing inserts for USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, DisplayPort, MicroSD, extra storage or even a dedicated headphone amp.

The base system will weigh just under 3 pounds and be 15.9mm thick. Other key specs include:

  • 13.5-inch, 3:2 aspect ratio 2256x1504 display
  • 1080p 60fps webcam
  • 57Wh replaceable battery
  • 11th Gen Intel Core Processors
  • Wi-Fi 6
  • Up to 64GB of DDR4 memory and 4TB of storage

The Framework company was founded by Nirav Patel, one of the early members of the Oculus team dating back to its Kickstarter days, and later the company's head of hardware. Pricing, exact specs and availability details for the Framework Laptop line will be forthcoming, with an expected launch this summer. Three base models will ship with Windows 10 Home or Pro, and a DIY edition will let you install your OS of choice -- yes, even Linux.

Nvidia GeForce Now gaming comes to Apple M1 Macs

Nvidia GeForce Now gaming comes to Apple M1 Macs

A year after its official launch, Nvidia's GeForce Now cloud gaming service is close to completing its expansion to support every platform. Just last week the beta of the service became available for Chrome on Windows and Mac, and on Thursday the company announced the app will work on Apple Macs that use the new M1 CPU via the Rosetta 2 emulator.

Nvidia's service, which lets you play PC games you own on almost any device, is the first to offer support for the M1. Using the emulator is a half step, however -- it remains to be seen if there'll be any performance hit from having to go through a translation layer. But you always have the alternative of playing under Chrome or Apple's own Safari browser, both of which run natively on the M1.

You'll almost always have a better experience playing via the app than within a browser -- browsers have network overhead that a dedicated app doesn't have to deal with -- but it never hurts to have the option if for some reason you can't install or run the app.

Anyone Can Rent This 900-HP Ford Mustang Shelby GT500-H From Hertz

Anyone Can Rent This 900-HP Ford Mustang Shelby GT500-H From Hertz

Hertz and Shelby American are taking the concept of "driving it like a rental" to a whole new level, teaming up to offer the insane 900-plus-horsepower 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500-H for rent at select Hertz airport locations. The three-year partnership between the brands also includes a run of 2022 Mustang Shelby GT-H fastbacks and convertibles with more civilized specs.

The GT500-H may be "the most powerful rental car that Shelby has ever built," but it's not the first Hertz x Shelby collaboration. The performance brand and car rental giant first teamed up to offer the original GT350-H "Rent-A-Racer" in 1966. A second Shelby GT iteration was offered in 2006 and renters were able to get behind the wheel of the Shelby GT-H in 2016. (Shelby also recently partnered with Sixt to offer the Shelby GT-S Mustang rental car in 2019.)

The 900-horsepower rental car

The GT500-H's makes over 900-horsepower thanks to a 5.2-liter V8 engine that's force fed air via a 3.8-liter Whipple supercharger, a cold air intake and a high volume intercooler. A Shelby by Borla cat-back exhaust makes sure the powerplant can exhale efficiently and sound good doing it. Personally, I reckon 900 ponies is a bit much to hand over to just anyone who rocks up to the rental counter, but nobody asked me.

The GT500-H features a dry carbon fiber hood that saves around 30 pounds versus the stock bonnet.

Hertz, Shelby American

Beefed up performance half-shafts make sure the power makes its way to the road via performance tires wrapped around gloss black 20-inch forged monoblock aluminum wheels. The fitment is staggered with 11-inch wide wheels up front and 11.5-inch wide rear drive wheels.

Nineteen GT500-H examples will get a coat of Shadow Black paint and six will be sprayed in Oxford White to honor Shelby American's 60th anniversary. Beneath the paint is a lightweight dry carbon fiber performance hood -- around 30-pounds lighter than the stock bonnet -- with functional heat extraction vents. All of Hertz's GT500-Hs will feature gold Le Mans-style stripes, a gold finish on the supercharger and a Carol Shelby Mustang numbered engine plate. Inside, renters will be treated to leather seats, gold Hertz-themed details and a numbered dash plate.

The GT-H returns

More widely available and a touch more tame, the Mustang Shelby GT-H fastback and convertible is powered by Ford's 5.0-liter V8. Hertz hasn't released detailed horsepower and torque numbers, but performance upgrades include a Shelby by Borla cat-back exhaust and staggered 20-inch wheels -- 9 inches wide up front and 10 inches at the rear -- shod with all-weather Michelin tires.

2022 Mustang Shelby GT-H convertible in Oxford White on a white background

Less insane, but still potent, the Mustang Shelby GT-H rental car returns in coupe and convertible configurations.

Hertz, Shelby American

Visually, the GT-H stands apart with its deeply vented hood, unique front grille, rear spoiler and tail light panel. Convertible models also feature a chunky roll bar. More colors are available to GT-H renters -- red, white, gray or black -- all featuring those Hertz-themed gold Le Mans stripes. Interior upgrades include leather seats, 60th Anniversary badges and a Carol Shelby Mustang numbered plate.

The 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500-H will be available to rent at Hertz airport rental locations in Fort Myers, Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Las Vegas and Phoenix. Hertz hasn't announced how much it'll cost to rent one, but you'll probably want to seriously consider getting the insurance if you do. The GT-H coupe and convertible will also be offered in those locations as well as Atlanta, Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco.

NHTSA Has Phantom Braking Questions for Tesla, Asks for Response by June 20

NHTSA Has Phantom Braking Questions for Tesla, Asks for Response by June 20

Phantom braking -- aka the phenomenon of your Tesla randomly slamming on the brakes when Autopilot is engaged -- is a big problem. We've experienced it on our long-term Model Y, and there have been hundreds of reports of other owners experiencing similar issues. It's such a problem that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is looking into it.

Tesla doesn't have the best reputation when it comes to criticism of its technology, even if it comes from a government agency, so it has been slow to respond to questions from NHTSA about possible faults with Autopilot. Now, according to a report published on Friday by Reuters, it's asking Tesla to respond by June 20.

NHTSA launched a preliminary investigation into the phantom braking issue back in February, and the results of that investigation haven't been made public yet. However, if the agency is still pursuing it, it stands to reason that there could be something to the claims.

What will happen if Tesla doesn't respond to NHTSA's questions by June 20? Well, it's hard to say. NHTSA has some teeth when it comes to creating and enforcing policy, but because this is a request, it's not totally clear what the agency's next steps could be, but hopefully, something comes of this.

The ongoing phantom braking issue with our Model Y has led us to stop recommending Tesla vehicles, and we'll continue down that road until the problem is fixed.

We'd typically ask a vehicle manufacturer for comment in a situation like this, but Tesla no longer has a media relations department.

Pfizer Says Its 3-Dose COVID-19 Vaccine Saw Strong Immune Response in Kids Under 5

For the most up-to-date news and information about the coronavirus pandemic, visit the

WHO

and

CDC

websites.

Pfizer and BioNTech's three-dose COVID-19 vaccine for children ages six months to under 5 years produced a strong immune response, the companies said on Monday.

The vaccine for younger kids has an efficacy of just over 80%, according to a preliminary analysis. The results are based on clinical trials in which children got 3-microgram doses -- one-tenth of the dose for adults -- of the COVID-19 vaccine. Following a third dose, the companies said the vaccine elicited a strong immune response with only mild to moderate side effects.

"The study suggests that a low 3-µg dose of our vaccine, carefully selected based on tolerability data, provides young children with a high level of protection against the recent COVID-19 strains," said Dr. Ugur Sahin, CEO and co-founder of BioNTech, in a release. "We are preparing the relevant documents and expect completing the submission process to the FDA this week, with submissions to EMA and other regulatory agencies to follow within the coming weeks."

While the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week signed off on a booster shot of the COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5 to 11, parents have been waiting for a vaccine to get authorized for this younger age group.

Pfizer initially submitted data to the Food and Drug Administration in February for emergency use authorization of its vaccine for babies, toddlers and children under age 5, but postponed the official application and authorization process to wait for additional data on a third dose. Moderna and Pfizer have both asked the FDA to authorize low-dose vaccines for the youngest age group, and the agency has a tentative schedule in June to go over data on both companies' vaccines.

Last week, the US crossed the grim milestone of 1 million deaths from COVID-19, and cases and hospitalization rates have been rising across the country. New, more contagious versions of the omicron variant are responsible. While numbers are lower than the surge this past winter, the rise threatens the relaxation of some safety measures, like dropped mask mandates.
