You may have found your TV-watching sweet spot with choices like House of the Dragon or She-Hulk, but how much are you spending? There are lots of great shows and movies across dozens of streaming services, but even subscribing to five of them could easily cost you more than $50 a month. (Just look at the latest pricing news for Disney Plus.) We're going to show you a trick that can help save you money.

Think about this: You subscribe to one or more services like Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus or HBO Max, stream until your favorite series ends its season run, then look for the next thing to watch. But is it worth keeping multiple subscriptions active if you're not actively watching anything on them? I don't think so. 

Here's a breakdown on our money-saving strategy and some tips on how to become a master at it.

Rotate your streaming services

For cord-cutters, leaving pricey cable packages behind in favor of streaming is a win for the wallet. Because we're able to sign up for monthly plans, it's easy to jump into a streaming service and jump out when prices increase or content dries up. According to Deloitte's 2022 Media Trends report, the biggest reasons people cancel their streaming subscriptions are because of pricing and lack of fresh content. Media companies call this behavior "churn." We're calling this the rotation method. 

The benefits? You save cash and avoid content droughts. Let's say a hot title like House of the Dragon or The Real Housewives is set to premiere on a service. Note the total episode count and wait until they're all available at once on a platform. You cancel HBO Max, Disney Plus or other service and then, once the episodes are available, resubscribe to catch up on your faves. Alternatively, you can start streaming a show midseason to cut costs. My monthly guide on which streaming services to cancel can help you keep up.

The downside? You won't have immediate access to every show you want to watch and will have to wait until the full season airs. And since many streaming services release new episodes weekly, rather than all at once, you might not be caught up at the same time as your friends. If you're someone who prefers to watch episodes immediately when they drop, you may decide it's worth it to have multiple subscriptions at a time. If you have patience, however, you can save some money.

The strategy can also work if you have a live TV streaming service to keep up with a particular sport. Once the season wraps up, cancel the service and save big, or move to a cheaper platform with fewer channels like Sling TV.

Tip No. 1: Cancel your streaming subscription before getting charged 

Set calendar reminders for your billing cycle and upcoming TV show or movie release dates. Give yourself enough warning to begin or end a subscription. Apps such as JustWatch, TV Time and Hobi help you track when and where TV shows and movies appear on a streaming service. 

Tip No. 2: Snag a streaming service deal

Look for discounts on streaming services. For example, Starz is offering a special rate of $5 per month for three months, which cuts its regular monthly rate of $9 nearly in half. You can also take advantage of the Disney Bundle, which provides access to Disney Plus, Hulu and ESPN Plus in one package for a reduced price. And eligible Hulu subscribers can add on Disney Plus for $3. Lastly, be sure to check with your mobile carrier to see which ones offer free streaming subscriptions.

Tip No. 3: Pick one or two default streamers

Subscribe to one or two must-have services for the year, and select only one or two more options to fit your monthly budget. Rotate the bonus service(s) according to what you want to watch, ensuring you don't miss your favorite shows while sticking to your monthly spending cap.

Tip No. 4: Stick to monthly billing

Avoid annual subscriptions and pay attention to your auto-renewal payment dates. Your billing cycle can help determine when it's the best time to quit a service, even if you've only signed up for a free trial.

Tip No. 5: Don't cancel your streaming service, pause it

Hulu allows you to pause your subscription for up to 12 weeks, and Sling has a similar option with stipulations. Check with your streaming provider to see if you can take a temporary break without canceling.

Bluetooth hack could hit most devices, say researchers

More than 5.3 billion devices with Bluetooth signals are at risk of a malware attack newly identified by an internet of things security company.

If you're not keeping count, that's most of the estimated 8.2 billion devices that use Bluetooth, which allows for our gadgets to connect and communicate wirelessly. Nearly every connected device out there has Bluetooth capability. Your phones, laptops, speakers, car entertainment systems -- the list goes on and on to even the most mundane gadgets.

Because those devices can connect to others effortlessly, Bluetooth has left an open attack point for hackers, according to researchers at Armis Labs. The attack method, which they're calling BlueBorne, is especially dangerous because it can spread without the victim doing anything or noticing it. 

In a lot of cases, malware depends on people clicking on a link they shouldn't have, or downloading a virus in disguise. With BlueBorne, all hackers need to spread malware is for their victims' devices to have Bluetooth turned on, said Nadir Izrael, Armis' chief technology officer.

And once one device has been infected, the malware can spread to other devices nearby with the Bluetooth turned on. By scattering over the airwaves, BlueBorne is "highly infectious," Armis Labs said.

"We've run through scenarios where you can walk into a bank and it basically starts spreading around everything," Izrael said.

The attack echoes the way the WannaCry ransomware spread earlier this year. WannaCry allegedly used the NSA's EternalBlue vulnerability and infected computers on the same network, even though they never downloaded the virus. That ransomware infected hundreds of thousands of computers within several hours.

Ben Seri, Armis Labs' head of research, fears that BlueBorne will lead to a similar massive outbreak. In several trials testing out BlueBorne, researchers were able to create botnets and install ransomware using Bluetooth, all under the radar of most protection.

"Imagine there's a WannaCry on Bluetooth, where attackers can deposit ransomware on the device, and tell it to find other devices on Bluetooth and spread it automatically," said Michael Parker, the company's vice president of marketing.

BlueBorne is a collection of eight zero-day vulnerabilities that Armis Labs discovered. Zero-day vulnerabilities are security flaws that are found before developers have a chance to fix them. That kind of exploit lets hackers execute malware remotely, steal data and pretend to be a safe network as a "man in the middle" attack.

It does this by taking advantage of how your Bluetooth uses tethering to share data, the company said. It's able to spread through "improper validation," Izrael said. The vulnerability affects devices on most operating systems, including those run by Google, Microsoft and Apple.

The three companies have released patches for the vulnerability. Apple confirmed that BlueBorne is not an issue for its mobile operating system, iOS 10, or later, but Armis noted that all iOS devices with 9.3.5 or older versions are vulnerable. Microsoft released a patch for its computers in July, and anybody who updated would be protected automatically, a spokesman said. Google said Android partners received the patch in early August, but it's up to the carriers to release the updates. Pixel devices have already received the updates.

Of the 2 billion devices using Android, about 180 million are running on versions that will not be patched, according to Armis.

The concern is the multitude of devices that will not be getting updates. Google, Microsoft and Apple are tech titans that regularly update their products for security. But updates might not be as frequent for single-purpose smart devices like your smart refrigerator or a connected television.

Of the potentially impacted devices, Armis Labs estimated that 40 percent are not going to be patched. That's more than 2 billion devices that will be left vulnerable to attacks, they warned.

"We're looking at a forever-day scenario for many of these devices," Parker said.

You can turn off your Bluetooth to prevent attacks if you won't receive the patch, Armis advised.

Jeep's off-road SUV leadership is under fire in a way that hasn't happened in decades. Between the launch of Ford's new Bronco and Bronco Sport, Land Rover's reborn Defender and Toyota's ever-growing onslaught of TRD models, Stellantis' 4x4 brand is facing unprecedented pressure. Casting a wary eye up the trail, the iconic marque is telegraphing that it's ready to bring a raft of new innovations to the segment in order to hold onto its position as the SUV world embraces electrification. At Thursday's multi-hour Stellantis EV Day virtual conference, Jeep teased a slew of future technologies, including everything from peer-to-peer EV charging to a unique drone-follow feature under the brand's new Zero Emission Freedom banner.

Jeep stopped short of guaranteeing that these technologies will appear in future models (the video presentation's off-road vignettes featured a disclaimer saying, "Concept models and features, and fictional situations shown throughout. Future models and features may vary"). However, many of these features are already technologically feasible today, so it wouldn't be at all surprising to see some of them incorporated in future models soon.

The idea of using one Jeep to recharge another in a pinch is simple, yet ingenious.

Peer-to-peer charging

The 21st-century equivalent of siphoning gas between tanks to bail out a pal, Jeep teased "peer-to-peer" charging, essentially plugging one electrified vehicle into another to share juice. While such a feature could be very helpful in urban life, it's even easier to imagine the potentially lifesaving benefit of vehicle-to-vehicle electron sharing in the wilderness, where the stakes of running out of power are often significantly higher.

At the moment, Jeep is already in the early stages of building a solar-powered off-road EV charger network in North America, including at places like Rubicon Trail.

Imagine setting up a drone's follow-me function via your Jeep's infotainment screen to record all of your adventures.

Drone-drone pairing

It's already possible using a number of off-the-shelf drones to tag and follow a moving target, be it a bicyclist, a skateboarder or an off-road SUV. But to this point, that "follow-me" functionality has not been baked into a production car or truck. Jeep may be about to change that. The automaker previewed a new drone-pairing function that includes dashboard integration that would allow you to record video of your on- and off-road adventures from a birds-eye view. Stellantis' presentation depicts a young couple being followed off-road in their Wrangler by a drone at night, and they appear to be able to keep tabs on their surveilling friend using the SUV's Uconnect infotainment display. A timeline overlaid on the video suggests that this technology could appear by 2025.

No keys, no problem.

Biometric recognition

The traditional car key's days seem to be numbered. Already we have phone-as-key technology from a number of automakers, as well as novel all-weather RFID-enabled bracelets, hotel-key-ike cards and other nontraditional ways to get into and start one's vehicle. Now, Jeep is positing that another tech might be on the way in future Jeeps: biometric recognition. By scanning outside of the vehicle, future Jeeps may be able to identify authorized users to enable vehicle access and operation without fumbling around for a key or phone, or even remembering a simple security combination. Most of today's new vehicles are already equipped with high-resolution cameras for active safety features, so it's not hard to imagine a future where these cameras and other sensors are used to identify and approve drivers and occupants as they approach a vehicle. The timeline overlaid on the presentation suggests that this tech may become a real ity by 2025.

Imagine camping and sending your Jeep off on its own to get more supplies. More beer or pizza, perhaps.

Autonomous off-road capability

Frankly, the idea of full self-driving on city streets and freeways feels like an increasingly unobtainable goal, so the notion of enabling fully autonomous driving off-road may seem even more far-fetched. That said, it might not be, as you're a lot less likely to encounter challenging and dynamic situations like cross-town traffic, cyclists and pedestrians. In any case, Jeep seems optimistic about the idea of launching driverless vehicles off-road, teasing the tech during Stellantis EV Day 2021. Such tech could be useful for sending a vehicle alone for additional supplies, or perhaps to bring an incapacitated adventurer to safety. It's worth noting that Jeep makes a point of saying "autonomous-capable" in the video -- the company seems to understand that owners will still want the experience of getting behind the wheel for themselves at times. The timeline overlaid on the presentation suggests that this tech may become a reality around 2030.

Remember smart glasses? They might finally be good for something if Jeep has its way.

The idea of sending your vehicle off autonomously might sound a bit unnerving, which is where this next innovation comes in. Remote vehicle tracking -- being able to see and keep tabs on your vehicle's whereabouts when it's off running around in self-driving mode -- could offer welcome reassurance. The video briefly depicts a woman using a pair of smart glasses to keep tabs on her vehicle, which is in motion. The video timeline overlaid on the presentation ballparks a 2030 timeframe for this tech.

Lie-flat seats in a vehicle that's known for being a camper's favorite seems like a home-run idea.

Jeep also showed a Wrangler with lie-flat "stargazing" seats that essentially turn the 4x4's cabin into a bed (not unlike the 2021 Ford F-150's new Max Recline front seats). In a dramatic twist that draws on the company's autonomous-off-road capability mentioned above, a fanciful video depicts a couple lying back and looking out through a Wrangler's open roof, keeping warm under a blanket as the vehicle drives itself along in search of astral views. While that self-driving bit may be a bit further down the technology path, lie-flat seating in a Wrangler -- an outdoors vehicle that's been a camping favorite for decades -- seems like a very useful and eminently doable future feature.

Stellantis' multifaceted online presentation shared a lot of additional news for the Jeep brand, including showing the first photos of a new Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid model, as well as confirming all-electric future versions of the forthcoming Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer full-size SUVs. Stellantis also teased a mysterious new all-electric Jeep off-roader amid exciting product announcements for its other brands that includee a Dodge electric muscle car and a futuristic-looking electric pickup for Ram, both due in 2024.

Google is holding a launch event for the upcoming Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro on Oct. 19, the company said in a tweet Tuesday. The prerecorded launch event will stream on Google's event site at 10 a.m. PT. 

The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro made a brief appearance in August right before Google launched the Pixel 5A. Since then, we've gotten a couple of glimpses at the new phones, but not every detail has been revealed. 

We know the Pixel 6 will come with a new chip designed in-house, called Tensor, which could boost computer power and video capabilities. The Pixel 6 Pro model is also getting an additional telephoto lens with 4x optical zoom. 

The phones are also more colorful than previous models, with pastel schemes in green, blue, pink and more. The Pixel 6 has a 6.4-inch display, while the 6 Pro has a 6.7-inch display. Both are larger than last year's 6-inch Pixel 5.

Google hasn't revealed pricing for the Pixel 6. Last year's Pixel 5 sacrificed some flagship features to get the launch price down to $699. The Pixel 3 and Pixel 4 both launched at $799.

Another childhood toy is coming soon to a theater near you. J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot production company has teamed up with Warner Bros. Pictures and toymaker Mattel to produce a live-action action film about the Hot Wheels line of toy cars.

"Growing up, Hot Wheels were more than just cars, they were vehicles for our imaginations," Peter Dodd, Warner Bros. vice president of production, said in a statement. "Today, we at Warner Bros. are thrilled to bring that imagination to the big screen with Robbie Brenner and the creative team at Mattel along with the ingenious minds of J.J. Abrams, Hannah Minghella and the team at Bad Robot."

Very little about the Hot Wheels movie was revealed, as cast, plot and release date aren't yet available. But Hot Wheels toys were first introduced in 1968, and have had a presence in the toy boxes of Gen Xers and following generations ever since.

Mattel and Warner Bros. are also working on a star-studded motion picture about the popular Barbie doll, set to come out in 2023. And get ready to see more childhood toys take the big screen. Mattel Films is developing movies based on American Girl dolls, Major Matt Mason action figures, the Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots boxing toy, and even -- not sure how this will work -- the card game Uno.

Stress can change your gut microbiome 

A well-balanced gut microbiome, consisting of plenty of "good" bacteria and other microorganisms, is one of the most important factors when it comes to gut health. Good gut bacteria are key to a healthy gut, and too much bad bacteria can lead to ill effects. "Stress very directly impacts gut health because it impacts the trillions of microbes that live within our digestive tracts, collectively known as the gut microbiome," says Singh. 

According to Singh, stress changes the way the gut functions, which affects the bacteria balance. Your gut microbiome can also impact your mental health through the gut-brain axis. "The composition of the gut microbiome may shift [due to chronic stress] and that could cause alterations in our mood and impact our health in other ways as well," he explains. 

Everyone experiences stress from time to time, but when it becomes chronic it's more likely to affect your gut health.

Stress may even have an effect on a person's gut microbiome before birth. A 2020 study found that pregnant women who experienced high levels of stress during pregnancy had babies with less good bacteria, leading researchers to believe that the mother's stress could be linked to the health of the baby's gut microbiome.

Stress hormones can make bad bacteria even worse 

Too much bad bacteria in the gut is, well, bad. According to Singh, stress can actually enhance bad bacteria -- meaning that the bacteria could cause even more harm to the gut than if you weren't experiencing stress.

 "Hormones and chemicals like catecholamines and serotonin are what we call quorum-sensing molecules. This means that when they are released by the gut, into the bowel, they can modify how pathogenic some bacteria might be. So basically, stress hormones and chemicals can make certain bacteria more pathogenic," explains Singh.

Stress messes with your digestive system 

Stress can wreak havoc on your stomach, often at the most inconvenient times like before a big meeting or when you're working overtime. This happens because stress changes the way your digestive tract functions. "If you are chronically stressed you might see the impacts of this alteration in the symptoms you have. Some common conditions that some might have due to altered motility include constipation, diarrhea, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), delayed gastric emptying, irritable bowel syndrome, and acid reflux," says Singh. 

If you experience stress-related or stress-induced stomach problems, talk to your doctor about the best treatment options. You can also consider addressing the stomach issues by working on your stress levels. Try stress management techniques that work for you like meditation, for example, or consider talking to a therapist for extra support. Even just incorporating more time to relax and have fun might make more of a difference with your stomach issues than you'd expect.

Just over a month after Samsung's last Unpacked presentation (where the Galaxy S22 phones and Tab S8 tablets were unveiled), the company announced two devices in its more midrange Galaxy A line. The stars of the show were the new additions to its budget-friendly Galaxy A series of phones, the Galaxy A53 and A33.

The Galaxy A53, which is the successor to last year's Galaxy A52 5G, features a 6.5-inch screen, 5G connectivity and four rear cameras all for $450 (£399 or roughly AU$710). That's $50 cheaper than what last year's A52 cost at launch. The latest affordable Galaxy A phone also sports a few new camera tricks, including a way to erase unwanted background objects and Fun Mode, Samsung's take on Snapchat-esque AR filters.

Samsung's Galaxy A33, which will not be sold in the US, falls between the Galaxy A13 and new A53. At 369 euros (£329, which is roughly $410 or AU$590), it's pricier than the $250 Galaxy A13 5G but cheaper than the Galaxy A53. Unlike the A53's price decrease over last year, the A33's starting price has risen from last year's £249 A32 5G.

Samsung updated the Galaxy A family as the market for budget phones has grown increasingly competitive. Apple just last week launched the $429 iPhone SE, while Google's Pixel A phones have become a mainstay in its lineup. 

Samsung's focus on budget smartphones is relatively new but seems to have resonated with shoppers so far. A-series phones accounted for 58% of Samsung's overall phone sales in 2021, according to Counterpoint Research data provided to CNET.
