Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that's taken over our lives.

The City of Birmingham. A hive of subversive humor. Didier Soulier/YouTube screenshoy by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET

Birmingham is so Muslim, they recently voted to remove "ham" from the (city's) name.

A little tip for our American friends, it's pronounced worst-sharia sauce.

Duran Duran was actually a misreading of Quran Quran.

I've been laughing all morning. It's becoming uncontrollable. When I was growing up, we used to call things like this "bostin."

Please let me explain. I'm from the city of Birmingham, England. It's the second-biggest city in England. It's a place that can be rough, dour, enlightened, hardy and deeply realistic. It was home to some of the world's great music (and also Duran Duran, hence the above witticism).

It's also not far from the county of Worcestershire (hence another of the jokes above.)

However, at the weekend, Steve Emerson, a terrorism expert, appeared on Fox News to paint a difficult picture of my home town. He claimed that the UK had no sovereignty over cities like Birmingham.

He described Birmingham as "totally Muslim." He said: "Non-Muslims simply don't go in."

I called my uncle and aunt, who are as Polish as the best vodka and have lived there for 50 years. "Have you converted?" I asked. "Only to nonfat milk," said my uncle.

Birmingham is 21.8 percent Muslim. Indeed, if you're looking for a majority there, it is Christians at 46.1 percent. Those who claims to have no religion at all comprise 19.8 percent. (Figures from 2011 Census.)

This story, though, is not about criticizing Fox News. It's not as if any network is devoid of error. There seem quite a few experts appearing on TV whose expertise lies in appearing on TV.

Moreover, as the Huffington Post reports, Emerson has apologized. His analysis was so far wide of the truth as to be laughable.

Which is why the Twitter hashtag #FoxNewsFacts is so glorious. Within it, there are the usual bitter diatribes. However, there is also such an outpouring of pure British humor as to render Emerson's enormous error its true worth.

In Britain the weather switches between Sunni and Shi'ite.

You may not be familiar with the British expression "sh**e." It's a very beautiful thing .

This hashtag is proof that wit can triumph over aggression, buffoonery and invective, even if only for a moment. The #FoxNewsFacts hashtag has been trending today. It is the humor that has risen to attention.

British Prime Minster David Cameron gave the Guardian his reaction: "When I heard this, frankly I choked on my porridge and thought it must be April Fool's Day. This guy is clearly a complete idiot."

But how much more penetrating is the image of the Queen of England wearing her headscarf with the caption: "The Queen is now being forced to wear a hijab by 'Moslems' due to the sharia law enforcement in the UK?"

Amazon Fire TV Cube Now Connects With Starkey Hearing Aids on Bluetooth LE

Amazon Fire TV Cube Now Connects With Starkey Hearing Aids on Bluetooth LE

People with hearing loss can now pair their hearing aids with the Amazon Fire TV Cube streaming device, improving the experience of watching their favorite TV shows.

The Fire TV Cube, now in its second generation, is the first streaming device from a US tech company that can turn a hearing aid into a Bluetooth headphone that's calibrated to an individual's specific hearing needs, the e-commerce and smart home giant said on Thursday.

The feature makes Fire TV Cube compatible with Audio Streaming for Hearing Aid, an open-source protocol for communicating with hearing aids. The streaming device will pair with hearing aids from Starkey, which manufactures products marketed under under the Audibel, NuEar, MicroTech and Audigy brands. To enable the compatibility, Amazon, Starkey and the makers of the device processors worked together to adjust their technology to work together.

Connecting a streaming box with hearing aids was a challenge, says Peter Korn, Amazon's director of accessibility for devices. That's because people generally sit farther away from their televisions than they do from other devices, such as mobile phones. (Apple iPhones and Android-powered phones already pair with hearing aids.)

Nearly one in five people around the world -- 1.5 billion people -- experience hearing loss, according to the World Health Organization. Many of them rank hearing their TV better as their second-most desired lifestyle improvement, according to Korn. (The first is to better hear conversations, he says.)

"The innovation for us was recognizing that customers wanted TV next," Korn said, "and we saw a path to doing that."

To pair your hearing aids to your Fire TV Cube, you can enter Fire TV Settings and select Accessibility and then Hearing Aids. It's similar to connecting Bluetooth headphones, Amazons says. The feature also allows you to hear the Fire TV Cube's Alexa voice assistant through your hearing aids. Devices already exist that plug directly into TVs and broadcast sound to hearing aids over Bluetooth. Owners of Fire TV Cube won't need an extra gadget.

Fire TV Cube's compatibility is another example of Big Tech's efforts to make its services more accessible to people with disabilities. Other accessibility technology includes screen reading software, screen magnifiers and glasses for the blind that can read documents and scan faces.

The Bluetooth pairing feature is one in a series of boosts to the power of hearing aids and cochlear implants, both of which have benefited from the same miniaturization of technology over time that has made our phone and computer chips more powerful even as they get smaller.

Hearing aids contain tiny components made possible by technology akin to that used in earbuds. Processors sit in between the microphone, which picks up environmental sounds, and the speaker that relays the sound into someone's ear. In hearing aids, the processors also amplify soundwaves from specific frequencies that the listener has difficulty hearing. Audiologists tailor that amplification to each person's hearing loss, much like an optometrist selects a prescription for correcting an individual's vision.

Connecting a hearing aid directly to the Fire TV Cube removes multiple steps involved in getting sound into the listener's ear. The data that encodes the sound in a TV show, sports broadcast or movie goes straight to the hearing aid's tiny antenna in digital form. By comparison, sound waves coming out of a TV speaker have to cross a room, raising the prospect of echoes and muffling before being picked up and processed by the hearing aid.

While sending digital sound files through Bluetooth is more efficient than blasting soundwaves through the air, Korn said it took "100 little fixes" in collaboration with Starkey and chipmaker MediaTek to make it work.

"At Starkey, we are transforming hearing aids into multifunctional devices," Achin Bhowmik, Starkey's chief technology officer and executive vice president of engineering, said in a statement. "Through strategic partnerships with organizations like Amazon, we are paving the way for cutting-edge products to connect with and stream audio to our state-of-the-art hearing devices."

The hearing aids connect over Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) because their small batteries have to work continuously throughout the day and aren't designed to take the heavy workload that a full strength Bluetooth signal would create.

Korn said his team isn't done. The support is slated to roll out to other Fire streaming devices later this year, including the Fire TV Stick and the Fire TV streaming service built into TVs made by Amazon and others. Amazon also has its eye on connecting cochlear implants to Fire TV in addition to more hearing aids that run on the Audio Streaming for Hearing Aid protocol.

Apple's New MacBook Air Adds Faster M2 Chip for $1,199

Apple's New MacBook Air Adds Faster M2 Chip for $1,199

This story is part of WWDC 2022, CNET's complete coverage from and about Apple's annual developers conference.

A redesigned MacBook Air was one of the highlight announcements at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday. The light MacBook, which hadn't been updated since late 2020, now gets the second-gen Apple Silicon chip, called the M2, a fanless body available in four colors and a new 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display.

The new 13.6-inch MacBook Air for 2022 follows the design of the current MacBook Pro 14- and Pro 16-inch models released late last year. Like those, it has a chunkier, squared-off look that's almost retro-feeling instead of the gently curved lids tapering to a point that previously gave the Air more of a wedge shape.

The 2022 Air didn't receive all of the additional ports of the 2021 Pro models: There's no SD card slot, it doesn't get an HDMI output for an external display and it has just two USB-C Thunderbolt ports. However, the updated Air does have MagSafe charging.

The new fanless body is available in four colors: silver, space gray, starlight and midnight. The laptop is just 11.3 millimeters thick and weighs only 2.7 pounds (1.2 kilograms). The new 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display is 25% brighter than its predecessor's screen, reaching 500 nits and support for 1 billion colors.

Above the display is an updated 1080p camera joined by a three-mic array and a four-speaker sound system. This should all really improve video calls. Apple said it will also have support for Dolby Atmos spatial audio. The Magic keyboard has a full row of function keys with Touch ID as well as a large Force Touch trackpad.

Apple said with the new M2 chip, Final Cut Pro performance is nearly 40% faster than on the M1 Air and Photoshop is up to 20% faster. Battery life is up to 18 hours of video playback and with an optional 67-watt power adapter it can charge up to 50% in 30 minutes.

The redesigned M2 MacBook Air arrives in July starting at $1,199 (£1,249, AU$1,899) with the M2 with an eight-core CPU and eight-core GPU, 8GB of memory and a 256GB solid-state drive. A $1,499 version has an M2 chip with an eight-core CPU and 10-core GPU, 8GB of memory and a 512GB SSD. The M1 MacBook Air stays in the lineup as well for $999 (£999, AU$1,499).

Polestar 2 2023 changes polestar new electric car polestar electric car review polestar 5 electric sedan polestar electric car review polestar new electric car polestar 3 electric polestar 6 lac edition
Polestar 6 Electric Roadster Slated for 2026 Production, Based on the O2 Concept

Polestar 6 Electric Roadster Slated for 2026 Production, Based on the O2 Concept

Swedish performance car company Polestar announced today plans to put an electric convertible into production starting in 2026. Dubbed the Polestar 6, the EV roadster will be based on the gorgeous Polestar O2 electric convertible concept that debuted earlier this year, with reservations opening to interested customers starting today.

The O2 concept arrived back in March at the nexus of "too good to be true" and "a sure thing." On the one hand, convertible sales have been in decline across the industry for years now. On the other hand, the premium market is fairly resistant to this shrinkage and Polestar's modular EV platform sharing could keep development and production costs low enough to justify a low-volume convertible model.

The 500 Polestar 6 LA Concept Edition examples will feature wheels and a color scheme that match the O2 concept.

Polestar

The Polestar 6 will be based on the same bonded aluminum platform as the previously announced Polestar 5 sedan and the same high-performance, 800-volt electric architecture featuring up to 884 horsepower (650 kilowatts) from its dual-motor powertrain and around 663 pound-feet of torque. Polestar is targeting a 3.2-second 0 to 62 mph sprint and a top speed of 155 mph. Expected range, charging speeds and pricing will be released closer to the 2026 launch window.

Polestar is planning a launch run of 500 Polestar 6 LA Concept Edition models for the hardtop convertible with styling inspired by the concept car. These will feature an exclusive Sky blue exterior finish, the Polestar O2 concept's 21-inch wheels and a light leather interior. Each of the 500 special editions will also be uniquely numbered.

The O2's wildest feature is an "autonomous cinematic drone" that can be deployed from the concept roadster at speeds up to 56 mph to track the car on the road and capture video clips that can be edited and shared from the dashboard. We're pretty sure that bit won't make its way into the production Polestar 6.

Polestar's electric lineup is expected to grow significantly over the next few years. Following the plug-in hybrid hot rod Polestar 1 sedan -- since discontinued in 2021 --  and the current Polestar 2 full-electric fastback, the Swedish performance car company plans to launch a Polestar 3 SUV next year, followed by the Polestar 5 sedan in 2024 and, now, the Polestar 6 convertible in 2026. That leaves a Polestar 4-shaped hole in its lineup that we expect will soon be filled.

§

The spectacular looking Polestar 1 plug-in-hybrid coupe was always meant to be a limited-run model, with just 1,500 total earmarked for production worldwide. The Polestar 1 is now entering its last year of production with the final 500 units available to order, just 150 of which will come to North America.

No powertrain changes have been made for the final model year, and that's fine by us. The Polestar 1 already was one of the most impressive plug-in hybrids out there, and it still offers one of the highest electric ranges out of any PHEV on sale. (It's only beaten by the also extremely rare Karma Revero.) It has a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors at the rear axle, an eight-speed automatic transmission with an integrated starter/generator and a 34-kWh battery pack. Total output is 619 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque, and the EPA says the Polestar 1 has a max EV range of 52 miles.

Nothing about the Polestar 1's looks has changed for the 2021 model year, either. Just five no-cost "colors" are available -- I say colors in quotes because there's white, black, two grays and a dark blue -- and each shade is available in a matte finish for an extra $5,000. The exterior trim is offered in chrome or gloss black, and the awesome 21-inch four-spoke wheels can be had in gloss black, matte-black or a diamond cut finish. On the inside you can get the upholstery in either black or black and white leather.

Appearance stuff aside, the Polestar 1 doesn't have any available packages or optional extras. And that's also a fine thing, as the Polestar 1 already has a whopping price tag of $155,000. The Polestar 1 is a super niche vehicle, but it was always meant to be just that. It's a plug-in-hybrid, carbon-fiber-bodied, two-door coupe with concept-car looks, from a Volvo-run company that will only produce full EVs from now on. There will probably never be another car like the Polestar 1, so if you want to get your hands on one of the final 150 cars, you can get your order in now online or visit one of Polestar's retail spaces.

Ring App Will Soon Be Available to Non-Ring Cameras

Ring App Will Soon Be Available to Non-Ring Cameras

The Ring smart-home security app will soon work with non-Ring cameras, the Amazon-owned company said Wednesday.

Starting in April, surveillance cameras that support The Open Network Video Interface Forum will have access to live view, video feedback, smart notifications and other Ring features.

In an email, Jamie Siminoff, Ring chief inventor and founder, said customers being able to integrate ONVIF-compatible cameras into the Ring ecosystem "is something I've been excited about for a long time."

"This will allow our many residential and business customers who use these cameras to easily link their existing systems within the Ring app, giving them greater peace of mind and the ability to use Ring technology to help secure what's most important to them."

The Ring Alarm Pro System

Non-Ring owners will need to purchase the $250 Ring Alarm Pro base station to access the Ring app.

Ring

It's possible the strategy is aimed at small and medium-size businesses and larger residential properties, not individual consumers: Most ONVIF-compatible cameras are IP-based devices made by commercial manufacturers like Amcrest, Bosch and Panasonic.

To access the Ring app, users have to have a Ring Alarm Pro base station, which comes with a built-in eero Wi-Fi 6 router and retails for $250. They'll also have to subscribe to the Ring Protect Pro plan, which starts at $20 a month.

In addition, their ONVIF-compatible camera needs to be password protected and able to support H.264 encoding and a video stream of 1,080 pixels or lower.

Nvidia in advanced talks to buy chipmaker Arm, says report

Nvidia is in advanced talks to acquire chipmaker Arm from SoftBank, according to Bloomberg, which cited anonymous sources. The companies apparently aim to reach a deal in the coming weeks, and the graphics card maker is the only suitor at the moment.

Earlier this month, The Wall Street Journal reported that Japanese conglomerate SoftBank was looking to sell the UK-based Arm, which it bought for $32 billion in 2016.

Apple announced in June that it would overhaul its Mac computers with Arm chips, which are similar to the ones it designs for iPhones and iPads, moving away from the Intel processors it's used for the past 14 years. Arm licenses its chip instruction set -- the collection of commands software can use to control a chip -- to companies like Apple that design their own processors.

Arm and Nvidia declined to comment. Softbank didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

SpaceX Crew-3 spacecraft gets toilet upgrade to fix urine tube problem

The four astronauts set to launch on a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft on Halloween can take comfort in knowing their toilet has gotten an important upgrade. SpaceX took a deep dive into the Dragon's loo after reports of issues with the private Inspiration4 mission and discovered a problem with a urine tube.

"There's a storage tank where the urine goes to be stored in the vehicle and inside that storage tank there's a tube that came unconnected or came unglued and it allowed urine to essentially not go into the storage tank, but to go into the fan system," SpaceX's William Gerstenmaier said during a NASA teleconference on Monday.

SpaceX found urine contamination under the floor of Inspiration4, though Gerstenmaier said the private astronaut crew wasn't aware of any issues during the three-day flight. The Crew-3 spacecraft -- named Endurance -- was upgraded with a welded structure that got rid of the troublesome joint from the previous design. "It will not be a problem for us at all with Crew-3," Gerstenmaier said.

Crew-3 is part of NASA's Commercial Crew Program that's using SpaceX to ferry crew to and from the International Space Station. NASA astronauts Raja Chari, Tom Marshburn and Kayla Barron and European Space Agency astronaut Matthias Maurer are set to spend six months in orbit.

There's another Crew Dragon already up at the ISS. It's the one that carried Crew-2 into space, and it's also suffering from the same pee-tube issue. Gerstenmaier said there was concern that Oxone -- a substance mixed with the urine to remove ammonia -- could potentially cause corrosion inside the spacecraft. Testing back on Earth and checks of the Crew-2 Dragon in orbit show it should be safe to use to bring those astronauts home.

The Crew-3 mission passed a flight readiness review and is a "go" for launch early in the morning Eastern time on Oct. 31. The astronauts on board will also be good to "go" with their improved space-commode.
