SpaceX Crew-3 spacecraft gets toilet upgrade to fix urine tube problem

The four astronauts set to launch on a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft on Halloween can take comfort in knowing their toilet has gotten an important upgrade. SpaceX took a deep dive into the Dragon's loo after reports of issues with the private Inspiration4 mission and discovered a problem with a urine tube.

"There's a storage tank where the urine goes to be stored in the vehicle and inside that storage tank there's a tube that came unconnected or came unglued and it allowed urine to essentially not go into the storage tank, but to go into the fan system," SpaceX's William Gerstenmaier said during a NASA teleconference on Monday.

SpaceX found urine contamination under the floor of Inspiration4, though Gerstenmaier said the private astronaut crew wasn't aware of any issues during the three-day flight. The Crew-3 spacecraft -- named Endurance -- was upgraded with a welded structure that got rid of the troublesome joint from the previous design. "It will not be a problem for us at all with Crew-3," Gerstenmaier said.

Crew-3 is part of NASA's Commercial Crew Program that's using SpaceX to ferry crew to and from the International Space Station. NASA astronauts Raja Chari, Tom Marshburn and Kayla Barron and European Space Agency astronaut Matthias Maurer are set to spend six months in orbit.

There's another Crew Dragon already up at the ISS. It's the one that carried Crew-2 into space, and it's also suffering from the same pee-tube issue. Gerstenmaier said there was concern that Oxone -- a substance mixed with the urine to remove ammonia -- could potentially cause corrosion inside the spacecraft. Testing back on Earth and checks of the Crew-2 Dragon in orbit show it should be safe to use to bring those astronauts home.

The Crew-3 mission passed a flight readiness review and is a "go" for launch early in the morning Eastern time on Oct. 31. The astronauts on board will also be good to "go" with their improved space-commode.

Twitter  is rolling out its updated privacy policy, and to help people better understand the changes, it's introduced a game. In Twitter Data Dash, unveiled Wednesday, players are invited to go on a pixelated adventure with a cute dog named Data.

The social media platform urges you to explore the Twitterverse by strolling to PrivaCity and avoiding its perils. After choosing a character, you (and Data) will have to avoid cat ads and nasty trolls and "swim through a sea" of direct messages. Once you collect enough bones, you're able to level up. But the bones also offer lessons in Twitter's privacy policy. For example, after you obtain them all for round one, you receive a message explaining how and why Twitter collects information. 

"We use information about what you do on Twitter -- like profile activity and the Topics you follow -- to customize your experience, including the ads you see," it reads. The message also explains how "personal ads" that are enabled on your account affect what you see when you're on or off the platform. 

Twitter on Wednesday said it "emphasized clear language and moved away from legal jargon" in its revamped privacy policy. People can look over the updated policies in Settings on the Twitter app or on the social network's redesigned privacy policy site. 

Twitter's privacy policy covers topics including what data it collects, how data is used and when data is shared, as well as ways for people to control their experience on the social network.

On Tuesday, Honda gave us our first glimpse at a new electric car concept it has planned for the Beijing Motor Show. Yes, believe it or not, some parts of the world are starting to regroup and trying to hold mass gatherings again. An auto show in the US right now feels a tad unbelievable.

But the show will go on in Beijing, where Honda will display this so-far-unnamed concept car. Honda simply called it the the "EV concept car," which will indicate "the direction of the future mass-production model of the Honda brand's first EV to be introduced in China." It honestly looks like a natural progression of the current Accord and Civic sold in the US, so it will be interesting to see if this sort of design influences cars planned for the US. It's certainly a lot different that the cutesy Honda E on sale now. Boy, do we wish the E was sold here...

The bulkier front clip definitely gives off some Accord vibes with the big Honda badge in the middle, while the headlights draw some connections with both the midsize Accord and compact Civic. The lighting makes it tough to really discern how large the EV concept is, but it's easy to imagine something on the smaller side for China.

Aside from the concept, Honda plans to show off the new CR-V plug-in hybrid the company readied for the Chinese market. We'll probably get at least one more teaser showing the EV concept off before the show opens on Sept. 26, so stay tuned.

Intel Says It'll Deliver 2025 Chip Tech a Half Year Early

After years of trouble and delay, Intel's chipmaking business finally has some good news to report. The most advanced manufacturing process the company has committed to will arrive in the second half of 2024, six months earlier than planned.

Intel fell behind rivals Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and Samsung because of problems modernizing its manufacturing, and it convinced chip designer Pat Gelsinger to return to the company as chief executive in 2021. Shortly afterward, Intel laid out a road map that meant five improvements to its manufacturing processes in four years, with manufacturing processes named Intel 7, Intel 4, Intel 8, Intel 20A and Intel 18A. Each step improves a chip's performance relative to its power consumption.

Those steps are the foundation of a plan to catch up to rivals in 2024 and surpass them in 2025. If successful, Gelsinger's plan will help Windows PCs keep up with ever more powerful Macs, return Intel to its glory days at the vanguard of the semiconductor business, justify its tens of billions of dollars of expenditures and slow the shift of chip manufacturing from the US to Asia.

"Intel must have good confidence in the [schedule] pull in," said Tirias analyst Kevin Krewell. "Otherwise, why announce it this early?"

Intel detailed the advancement along with the announcement that it's opened its latest chip fabrication facility, or fab, devoted to developing its next-gen manufacturing processes. It performs such work at its newly named Gordon Moore Park in Oregon, where it's investing $3 billion in the new Mod3 wing of its D1X fab. Intel replicates its D1X processes across fabs all around the world.

The manufacturing progress news bodes well not just for Intel's 2024 chips, but also for Intel's business using the steps on the way.

Those steps are important for Intel's own processors and for another part of Gelsinger's recovery plan, Intel Foundry Services, a separate business unit set up to build others' chips the way TSMC and Samsung do. IFS customers will get access to Intel 3 and Intel 18A processes, the company said.

Gelsinger had hinted earlier that its chip manufacturing improvements were on or ahead of schedule, and he showed off an 18A wafer with test chips in February. Intel didn't offer specifics on what went well. 

The new 270,000-square-foot Mod3 building has high enough ceilings and strong enough floors to accommodate the latest machines used to etch circuitry onto the silicon crystal wafers that after months of processing steps become microchips, said Ryan Russell, corporate vice president of logic technology development.

Intel was slower than rivals to move to chipmaking equipment that uses extreme ultraviolet light to inscribe smaller circuitry elements on chips, a technology called photolithography that's a key part of processor miniaturization. Under Gelsinger, Intel is trying to play nicer with chip fabrication equipment makers like Dutch ASML. Indeed, Intel will receive ASML's first model of a second generation of EUV machines using an approach called high numeric aperture that inscribes finer lines than conventional EUV.

Intel has taken several measures to ensure it doesn't repeat mistakes made adopting its last two manufacturing processes, called Intel 10 and Intel 7. For one thing, it's spending more money on test wafers to try different options.

"Having more silicon that you can run in parallel really lets you speed up your development process because you can afford to run more innovative experiments," Russell said.

For another, Intel has decoupled improvements and developed contingency plans so it can keep moving ahead even if all its ideas don't pan out.

Two big developments coming with Intel 20A are backside power delivery, branded PowerVia, which moves electrical power supply circuitry to the opposite side of the processor instead of blending it with millions of communication channels. Another is the new "gate all around" design for transistors, the core circuitry element that processes data, which Intel brands as RibbonFET.

They're both dramatic changes, but Intel is developing PowerVia with conventional transistors, too, in case the RibbonFET approach has problems, said Sanjay Natarajan, senior vice president of logic technology development.

Intel also is adopting high numeric aperture lithography more flexibly. That's scheduled to arrive in Intel's 2025 chipmaking process, but the company can change course.

"We're prepared for a 2025 intercept," Natarajan said. "If high NA is really mature later, let's say 2026, we're prepared for the right intercepts there."

Saudi Arabia may block WhatsApp within weeks

Saudi Arabia plans to block WhatsApp in coming weeks if the makers of the mobile chat app don't comply with local regulations.

The warning comes after the Communications and Information Technology Commission blocked popular voice and messaging app Viber last week.

"We have been communicating with WhatsApp and other similar communication platforms to get them to cooperate and comply with the Saudi telecom providers, however nothing has come of this communication yet," Abdullah Al-Darrab, governor of the CITC, told English language Arab News.

One of the regulations stipulates that WhatsApp establish a local server that allows officials to monitor user activity, Al-Darrab told the news agency.

"We gave them a week to comply and have been communicating with them since March to no avail," he said. "Therefore, this has left us with no choice but to block these services, beginning with Viber."

CNET has contacted WhatsApp for comment and will update this report when we learn more.

The Saudi Arabian government has cracked down on messaging apps before, temporarily banning BlackBerry messenger services after BlackBerry reportedly didn't adhere to the country's regulatory requirements. The Saudi government complained at the time that the encrypted security used in the BlackBerry network prevented the government from monitoring communications channels, which it said could be used to threaten national security.

In March, Saudi officials threatened to block popular Internet chat, call, and messaging services Skype, WhatsApp, and Viber if they did not comply with local regulations.

Samsung TV Plus Gets a Revamp Across Galaxy Devices, Smart TVs

Samsung on Tuesday announced the global relaunch of its free streaming service, Samsung TV Plus, with a logo redesign and lineup of new programming for TV and mobile customers across 24 countries. The electronics company is rolling out the app rebrand for its smart TVs, Galaxy devices and the web.

The relaunch expands the company's free, ad-supported streaming platform with access to more premium content, including local news, concerts and feature films. According to Samsung, the rollout will bring additional programming from A+E Networks, BBC and ION, as well as more live news broadcasting, exclusive premieres and a fresh batch of channels. Viewers can now stream ION to catch Law & Order: SVU, NCIS or Chicago Fire and also have the option to watch four BBC channels, including Classic Doctor Who and Antiques Roadshow UK. 

The platform is also growing its lifestyle category with the addition of the Home.Made.Nation station from A+E, which is intended to complement its slate of travel, food and home improvement channels. Viewers who love cars can tune in for the fall launch of Ride or Drive, an upcoming original Samsung TV Plus channel with dedicated auto-themed content. And the Samsung Showcase channel will feature special events, concerts and more. Moving forward, the brand has plans to grow its video-on-demand library in 2023 through partnerships with Lionsgate and other studios.

Originally launched in 2015, Samsung TV Plus features over 200 channels in the US -- and more than 1,500 worldwide -- that stream sports, music, news, TV shows and movies on demand. The service comes preinstalled on 2016-2022 Samsung smart TVs, Galaxy tablets and phones and select Family Hub refrigerators. Billed as an alternative to paid subscription services like Netflix and Disney Plus, the app offers a watchlist, recommendation feature and channel guide but doesn't require you to sign up for an account. Though Samsung TV Plus is solely available on the brand's devices, it's another free platform that joins the likes of Freevee, Tubi, Roku Channel and Pluto TV, which are accessible on multiple streaming devices and smart TVs.

I'm strapped into the shotgun seat of a Porsche Panamera, parked in a lot just outside FC Barcelona's Camp Nou stadium. My chauffeur for the afternoon: Huawei'sMate 10 Pro smartphone.

You read that right. A phone will be driving this car.

No, Huawei isn't getting into the autonomous car business. The Chinese telecom giant set up this experiment to show off the processing prowess of the flagship phone's Kirin 970 chip, which features an artificial intelligence engine.

"This is purely a showcase of what the phone today is capable of," said Arne Herkelmann, European head of handset portfolio and planning for Huawei.

Alongside buzzwords like 5G and augmented reality, AI stands as one of the key themes for the Mobile World Congress trade show here. The mobile industry has taken its cue from the success of digital assistants like Amazon's Alexa and is touting smarter networks and devices.

There's no one in the driver's seat. The phone mounted to the windshield is the only one controlling this car.

For instance, LG unveiled a revamped flagship called the LG V30S, which added extra memory and AI capabilities. Nokia talked about the role of AI in all the traffic flowing through faster 5G networks. Verizon Chief Technology Officer Hans Vestberg said in an interview that he sees AI -- the power behind computer programs that can learn and adapt on their own -- being useful for detecting and automatically repairing problems with the network.

In November, Huawei unveiled the Mate 10 Pro and the vaunted AI engine in the Kirin 970. The company began selling the phone in the US in February, although without a carrier partner. 

Herkelmann said that since the launch, he'd been inundated with questions about how exactly its AI works. MWC 2018 presented a chance to show off those capabilities. 

Enter the road reader challenge. The company wanted to see if the phone was smart enough to recognize objects like a dog, a soccer ball or a person on a bicycle and tell the car to maneuver away. (Don't worry. The company used cardboard stand-ins.) The engine was fed more than 1 million images and can recognize 1,000 objects.

Autonomous driving, DIY style

Huawei spent five weeks putting this project together -- and you could kind of tell.

There was no polished self-driving car that you would find from Alphabet's Waymo unit or Uber's autonomous fleet. Missing were any sophisticated radars and depth sensors.

Huawei chose the Panamera because it wasn't already a self-driving car. The company's engineers mounted a high-speed camera on the roof, which provided a constant video feed to the phone of everything in front of the car. They also rigged up simple robots to help control the gas, brake and steering wheel.

A developer called Kerve created an app with a simple user interface, allowing you to tap a button on the phone to get the car going.

I had come into this thinking that the car would go along a curvy track. But instead it was set to accelerate down a simple straight path for roughly 100 feet. Considering how slowly we were going, it almost felt like a waste of a good Porsche.

Herkelmann said Huawei could have taught the phone to drive the car around corners or on different roads, but it would have take more time and space than the company had.

What was it like?

I had a chance to ride through the course twice. The first time was a practice run, in which the car moved at 5 miles per hour. Employees at the other end rushed to the road with cardboard obstacles at random times and locations, and you could see through the app on the Mate 10 Pro that it was able to determine whether the object was a soccer ball or a dog.

Once the car got a few feet away from a dog, it abruptly stopped.

Before beginning the next run, you choose how you'd like to avoid specific objects (swerve to the right, turn to the left or brake).

Fortunately, the second time offered a little more pop. The Panamera jumped to about 30 mph, and when it got close to a man and a bicycle, swerved to the right.

While the experience lacked in thrills, Huawei had made its point. The drive to build autonomous vehicles has chipmakers like Qualcomm and Nvidia offering dedicated processors for the auto industry. Huawei jury-rigged this in a few weeks with an off-the-shelf phone.

That alone is impressive, even if I'll stick to reading emails and posting to Instagram on my phone, and keeping my hands on the steering wheel when I'm in my car.
