Facebook, YouTube to Restrict Some Russian State-Controlled Media Across Europe

Facebook, YouTube to Restrict Some Russian State-Controlled Media Across Europe

Facebook, YouTube and other social networks are restricting access to Russian state-controlled media outlets RT and Sputnik across Europe, amid calls to crack down on disinformation. The move will likely heighten tensions between some of the world's most popular social networks and the Russian government.

Facebook's parent company, Meta, said Monday that it will limit the accessibility of Sputnik and RT across the European Union.

"We have received requests from a number of governments and the EU to take further steps in relation to Russian state-controlled media. Given the exceptional nature of the current situation, we will be restricting access to RT and Sputnik across the EU at this time," Nick Clegg, who oversees global affairs at Meta and is a former UK deputy prime minister, said in a tweet.

Clegg didn't respond to questions on Twitter about what the restrictions entail, how many requests Meta has received and from which governments or how many Facebook users will be impacted by these restrictions. Clegg also didn't say when these restrictions would start. RT's Facebook page has 7.4 million followers and Sputnik's Facebook page has 1.4 million followers. The media outlets are also on Facebook-owned Instagram, a photo and video service. RT has 839,000 followers on Instagram and Sputnik has 116,000 followers.

On Tuesday, Google said in a post on Twitter that it would block YouTube channels connected to RT and Sputnik across Europe.

"Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, we're blocking YouTube channels connected to RT and Sputnik across Europe, effective immediately," reads a tweet from the official Google Europe account. "It'll take time for our systems to fully ramp up. Our teams continue to monitor the situation around the clock to take swift action."

Google, the video giant's parent company, didn't immediately respond to questions on how many YouTube channels would be blocked. RT's main channel on YouTube has more than 4.6 million subscribers, while Sputnik has over 300,000 subscribers.

Facebook's move came a day after Meta announced it had restricted access to several accounts, including from Russian state-controlled media, in Ukraine after a request from the government there. Meta has been facing more pressure to take action against these media outlets for spreading propaganda and false claims after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

On Sunday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a tweet that the EU's executive branch is developing tools to ban "toxic and harmful disinformation" published by RT and Sputnik and their subsidiaries. The EU is an economic and political union of 27 countries, including France, Germany and Spain.

Following Facebook's move on Tuesday, RT took issue with unspecified comments from European government officials and actions by social media platforms, with its deputy editor-in-chief saying in a statement that no one had pointed to specific evidence of falsehoods appearing on its site during the Ukraine crisis. In its own statement, Sputnik's press arm characterized the restrictions as an "information war against the Russian media."

RT and Sputnik are on other social media sites, including Twitter and TikTok. A spokeswoman for TikTok said users in the EU won't see content from RT's and Sputnik's accounts. Twitter started labeling state-affiliated media, but a spokeswoman said the company had "nothing to share at this time" when asked if the company was also planning to restrict RT and Sputnik.

The rare move by Meta also raises questions about whether Russia will further restrict access to Facebook and Instagram. Ukrainians have put pressure on Facebook to remove access to the main social network and Instagram in Russia, but Clegg said Sunday those platforms are also being used by protesters and as a source of independent information. "The Russian Government is already throttling our platform to prevent these activities. We believe turning off our services would silence important expression at a crucial time," Clegg said in a tweet on Sunday.

Russia said last week that it's partly restricting access to Facebook after the social network refused to stop fact-checking and labeling content posted on Facebook by four Russian state-owned media organizations. Russia's telecommunications regulator, Roskomnadzor, alleges Facebook violated "fundamental human rights" by restricting the country's state-controlled media.

Facebook and YouTube have also been barring ads from Russia state media. Twitter also said last week that it's temporarily pausing ads in Ukraine and Russia.

On Sunday, Meta also announced that it removed a network of about 40 fake accounts, Pages and Groups on Facebook and Instagram from Russia and Ukraine. Meta said some of these accounts pretended to be news editors and ran fake news websites and published stories that included "claims about the West betraying Ukraine and Ukraine being a failed state." Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp, created a special operations center with experts who speak Ukrainian and Russian to help monitor its platform.

The Acer Aspire C27, C24 all-in-one desktops aim to simplify your WFH life

This story is part of CES, where CNET covers the latest news on the most incredible tech coming soon.

We're going to see quite a few PCs -- laptops and desktops -- this year and beyond aimed at all the people who started working from home during the pandemic and aren't going back to an office full-time or at all. It's a change that will benefit everyone, regardless of where you're working from, because it's forced PC-makers to make some overdue improvements. The upcoming Acer Aspire C24 and C27 all-in-one desktops announced at CES 2022 are good examples.

The 24- and 27-inch desktops will have 12th-gen Intel processors up to a Core i7, up to 64GB of memory, a 1TB or 2TB SSD for storage and entry-level Nvidia GeForce MX550 discrete graphics. The resolution on the displays is just 1080p but they are touchscreens. Also, they have Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 6E, so moving data around fast won't be a problem.

To help out with the increase in video conference calls you're no doubt doing, Acer put in a 5-megapixel webcam with a physical privacy shutter and dual microphones for better audio. And the AIOs only weigh about 3 or 4 pounds (1.4 or 1.8 kilograms) depending on the model, so if you have to pick up and move to another room in your house to work, it seems like it'll be pretty painless.

No pricing or availability was announced, but the Aspire line is all about value, so I would expect these to be reasonably affordable whenever they arrive this year.

Windows 10 on a Mac: Here's How to Set It Up for Free

Windows 10 on a Mac: Here's How to Set It Up for Free

No matter how happy you are with your MacBook Pro, there's always something that Windows can offer that MacOS can't, whether it's exclusive software and video games or unique settings and features. And you might not know this, but if you only own an Apple computer, there's still a way to run Windows on it.

As long as you have an Intel-based Mac with enough storage and the correct Windows 10 ISO file -- which you can download for free from the official Windows website -- you can set up Windows 10 on your Apple computer in less than an hour. From then on, anytime you boot up your Mac, you can choose whether to run Windows 10 or MacOS. Here's how to do it.

Here's what you need before you start

To successfully run Windows 10 on your Mac computer, here's what you need to have:

  • An Intel-based Mac computer (if your computer is on this list, it's not supported).
  • 64GB or more free storage space on your startup disk.
  • A power connection (if you're on a laptop).

If you're unsure whether your computer is Intel-based, click on the Apple logo on the menu bar, and then go into About This Mac. If you see the words Processor, followed by the name of an Intel processor, like "2.6GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7," then you have an Intel-based Mac.

Before you start, though, it's wise to back up your disk with Time Machine before partitioning just in case something goes wrong.

1. Download the Windows 10 ISO File

Windows 11 isn't currently compatible with Boot Camp Assistant on MacOS. So, you'll need to download Windows 10 instead. You can download a free disc image, also known as an ISO file, of Windows 10 from the official Windows website.

1. On your Mac, go to this Windows software download page.

2. Click on Select Edition, and choose Windows 10 (multi-edition ISO).

3. Hit Confirm, and wait for your request to be verified.

4. Once that finishes, choose your language and click on Confirm.

5. Finally, click on 64-bit Download to download the Windows 10 ISO file.

Download the 64-bit Windows 10 ISO file from the Windows website (most modern computers have a 64-bit capable processor).

Nelson Aguilar/CNET

The Windows 10 ISO file is nearly 6GB, so depending on your internet connection and speed, it could take up to 30 minutes to finish downloading. After the ISO file is done, leave it in your downloads, and move on to the next step.

2. Run Boot Camp Assistant

The software you'll use to run Windows 10 on your Mac is Boot Camp Assistant, which comes factory-installed on your Mac. Boot Camp Assistant is made specifically for installing Windows operating systems on your computer, and fortunately the setup process is pretty straightforward.

1. Launch Boot Camp Assistant on your Mac, and click Continue.

2. Click on Choose a Windows 10 ISO file, and upload the Windows 10 ISO file you downloaded in the previous step.

3. Drag the bar to choose a size for your Windows partition disk (42GB is the minimum).

4. Click Install, and wait roughly 10 minutes for the partition to be created.

screen-shot-2022-01-19-at-6-01-42-pm.png

Upload the Windows 10 ISO file and choose the partition size.

Nelson Aguilar/CNET

Once the Windows partition is finished, your laptop will restart.

3. Install Windows on your Mac

Your computer will boot up, but instead of showing you the Apple logo you're accustomed to, you should instead see the blue Windows logo appear. Here's what you need to do next:

1. Go through the Windows setup.

2. Enter a product key if you have one. If not, you can continue without one.

Even without a product key, you'll be able to access Windows on your Mac, so don't worry. During the installation, you'll see window files copied, features and updates installed and more. This should take another 10 minutes.

4. Set up Windows on a Mac

Your Mac will restart. But this time you'll be asked to set up Windows, just as you would on a Windows computer. You can use Cortana and your voice to complete the setup, but you're also welcome to use your keyboard, mouse and trackpad.

1. Choose your language, keyboard layout, Wi-Fi and more to begin.

2. If you have a Windows account, log in with your credentials.

3. Windows will boot up on your Mac. You'll be asked to create a passcode and/or PIN to enter your computer. Do that to protect your account.

This is the Windows lock screen that appears after your Mac restarts.

Nelson Aguilar/CNET

5. Install Boot Camp on Windows

Finally, the last thing you'll need to do is install and update Boot Camp on Windows. That will let you make any additional changes to your partition or fix any issues while you're running Windows. When you access Windows for the first time, you should receive a notification to install Boot Camp. This will take 10 minutes to install, but it's the last thing you need to do before you can use Windows without any issues.

6. Use Windows on your Mac

Feel free to use Windows how you want. Windows 10's default web browser is Microsoft Edge, but you can use it to download Chrome or anything else to surf the internet. You can then download files and install software you would only be able to install on a Windows-powered computer -- like Paint.NET and certain games from Steam -- but on your Mac.

7. Switch Between Windows and Mac

If you ever want to go back to MacOS from Windows, do the following:

1. Restart your computer.

2. As soon as the screen goes black, hold down the Option key for 5 seconds.

3. On the screen, you'll then have the option to boot up MacOS or Windows.

4. Choose the partition you want to open.

Hold down the Option key when you reboot to choose a different partition.

Phantom Galaxy Dazzles in Stunning Image From Webb and Hubble Telescopes

Phantom Galaxy Dazzles in Stunning Image From Webb and Hubble Telescopes

It's the buddy flick space fans have been waiting for. The new James Webb Space Telescope and the venerable workhorse Hubble Space Telescope team up to seek out the heart of the Phantom Galaxy. Hijinks ensue.

The European Space Agency shared a combined telescope view of the Phantom Galaxy in a stunning image released on Monday. Found 32 million light-years away in the Pisces constellation, the galaxy (also known as Messier 74 or M74) is a cover model among spiral galaxies. It's known for its well-defined curving arms, which star in an image that brings together Webb's infrared vision and Hubble's ultraviolet and visible wavelengths.

Three versions of the Phantom Galaxy show Hubble's optical view, the combined image and Webb's infrared view.

ESA/Webb, NASA & CSA, J. Lee and the PHANGS-JWST Team; ESA/Hubble & NASA, R. Chandar Acknowledgement: J. Schmidt

ESA showed what the JWST and Hubble images look like separately and what can be learned by mixing the two. "The addition of crystal-clear Webb observations at longer wavelengths will allow astronomers to pinpoint star-forming regions in the galaxies, accurately measure the masses and ages of star clusters, and gain insights into the nature of the small grains of dust drifting in interstellar space," the space agency said.

The colors in the tag-team image highlight different features of the galaxy. Red is dust in the spiral arms, with more orangey areas indicating hotter dust. Young stars glitter in blue. Older stars near the center shine in green and cyan, creating the galaxy's "spooky glow." The pink hot spots are places of star formation.

We saw a preview of Webb's look at the Phantom Galaxy back in July when astronomers got their hands on early Webb datasets and played around with processing and sharing the photogenic scene.

Hubble is a joint project of NASA and ESA, while Webb is run by NASA, ESA and the Canadian Space Agency. The agencies have long said Webb isn't meant as a replacement for Hubble, which is over 30 years old -- pretty ancient in space telescope terms. The two telescopes have different specialties and Hubble could continue to operate into the late 2020s.

I like to think of Hubble and JWST as the Men in Black of the cosmos, a crusty veteran and a newcomer, both with an interest in space, coming together to make the world of science a better place.

Best Outdoor Projector for 2022

Best Outdoor Projector for 2022

Enjoying a movie with your family is great. Enjoying it outside, relaxing under the stars, is even better. As projectors have gotten smaller, brighter, and cheaper, it's become easier than ever to set up a backyard movie night. You can choose between easily portable, battery-powered models, or wired models with built-in streaming and tons of brightness.

Ideally, you'll have some sort of screen, but even a big sheet or posterboard can do the trick. All the projectors on this list have speakers, but if you have a big yard, or want the movie to be heard over the ruckus of some younglings, it'd be best to connect to a Bluetooth speaker. If your Wi-Fi isn't strong enough to reach where you want to show the movie, you can turn your phone into a hotspot. In a few cases you can download some content to the projector itself, but don't expect this from every model nor with every streaming service.

Here are the best outdoor projectors we've tested.

Geoffrey Morrison/CNET

The small Mars II Pro isn't the brightest, nor smallest, nor cheapest projector on this list. It's not even the easiest to use. But it does combine a pleasing image with decent sound for a good price. It's an all-around great option without the serious drawbacks of many other portable projectors.

The main issue with the Mars II Pro is it doesn't use the full version of the Android TV streaming service like some newer models. As such, it's not as easy to use and you won't get every streaming service. The big ones are here, of course, like Netflix and Disney Plus, but no HBO. You can connect a streaming stick, of course, and there's a USB connection to power it right on the back.

The battery lasts about the length of a long movie.

Check out our in-depth review of the Mars II Pro..

Geoffrey Morrison/CNET

The AAXA P6 throws out an impressive amount of light, and lasts up to a claimed 4 hours with its built-in battery. You'll need to add a streaming stick to watch anything, but there's a USB connection to power one so that's easy to do.

Overall the image quality is OK, but not great. The colors are off, the contrast ratio isn't great and its resolution of 1,280x800 pixels is noticeably softer than 1080p and especially 4K projectors.

That said, it's bright and inexpensive, which is a great combination.

Check out our full review of the AAXA P6X.

Geoff Morrison/CNET

The Vimgo P10 regularly hovers around $250, and often drops even cheaper. It's a strange product, doing something right and a lot of things wrong. The image it produces is watchable, and has an impressively high contrast ratio, but the colors are flat-out atrocious. The brightness and sharpness uniformity are some of the worst I've seen, which means everything that's not dead center in the image is dimmer and softer than the middle. It also has no upwards throw, so it needs to be placed at the same height as the middle of the screen, which is, like I said, strange for an inexpensive projector.

The biggest drawback for this list is its lack of a battery. But for the added price of an extension cord it's still cheaper than most other projectors on this list.

But for the price, it's hard to beat. But if you can spend more, you'll get more.

Check out our full review of the Vimgo P10..

Geoffrey Morrison/CNET

The AAXA P8 is tiny, like the Nebula Capsule, but rectangular to that projectors cylindricalness. It's significantly brighter than the Capsule, but it lacks that projector's battery.

Like its big brother, the P6X, the P8 doesn't have the best picture quality. However, it's inexpensive and bright, two things we like a lot. For similar money the Vimgo P10's picture quality is a little better, but that projector has its own serious drawbacks.

All ultra-budget projectors have concessions to price, but with the P8 those concessions don't include brightness and size.

Check out our full review of the AAXA P8..

Geoffrey Morrison/CNET

The Laser 4K's claim to being portable and "outdoor" boils down to a huge handle built into its design. It lacks a battery, is quite heavy, and it's really expensive.

It is, however, exceptionally bright. One of the brightest projectors we've ever tested. It has built-in Android TV too. It's more portable, and better suited to outdoor movie nights than, say, the Epson 5050.

The Optoma UHZ50, the BenQ HT2050A or the Epson Home Cinema 2250 are better overall, however. They're all bright, cheaper and easily carried, though they lack a stylish handle.

Check out our review of the Anker Nebula Cosmos Laser 4K.

Other products we've tested

Anker Nebula Solar Portable : The Solar's sibling, the Mars II Pro, is better. The Solar's main disadvantage compared to others on this list is its relatively dim image, which means it can't project as large a picture and still look good. If you want a sleek, budget-friendly portable with 1080p and plan on keeping the image on the small side, however, this is a solid choice. Read our Anker Nebula Solar Portable Review.

LG CineBeam PH30N : The tiny LG PH30N is only slightly larger than the AAXA P8. It's not particularly bright, however, nor does it have built-in apps. The battery doesn't last as long as the AAXA P6X although it is a bit cheaper. Read our LG CineBeam PH30N review.

Samsung Freestyle : The small, stylish, cylindrical Freestyle is an interesting idea, but it's not very bright, lacks a battery, and is quite expensive. Read our Samsung Freestyle review.

The Samsung Freestyle is a cool looking design but too expensive for what you get.

Geoff Morrison/CNET

Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2 : Is another relatively expensive small projector that could be better. You may appreciate the compact size, 1080p resolution and built-in Android TV streaming, but it's relatively dim, especially for the price. It also lacks both a built-in battery and compatibility with a USB power source, so it's not truly portable. Read our Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2 review.

How we test outdoor projectors

We don't treat outdoor projectors any differently, testing-wise, than any other projector. Just because a projector has the convenience of being portable doesn't mean it shouldn't perform to reasonable standards. The biggest difference is checking the performance on the battery vs. plugged in. That almost always just results in a difference in light output.

Outdoor projector FAQs

Can any projector work outside?

Yes! Well, sort of. No projector should live outside. The humidity and temperature variations will quickly ruin a projector, just like it will with a TV. But if you plan to bring it inside after every use, something we highly recommend, you can use any projector outside.

What if my Wi-Fi doesn't reach outside?

Most phones can work as a Wi-Fi hotspot, using your cellular data instead. If you're not on an unlimited data plan, this can drain your available data however. Also consider some free, or low cost, improvements to your home's wireless network. That might extend the reach enough.

Do outdoor projectors have streaming apps? Netflix, Disney, etc?

Sometimes. Most of the projectors on this list either have full, or partial, streaming interfaces like you'd find in a modern smart TV. They might not have every streaming app, however. Netflix is pretty much a given, but beyond that, it varies.

All the projectors on this list have an HDMI input, and all except the Capsule also have a USB connection, so you can connect any streaming stick to them and get all the apps you're used to.

Astronomers Catch New Meteor Shower in an Outburst

Astronomers Catch New Meteor Shower in an Outburst

We think of space as an empty vacuum, but it's also a very dynamic place with plenty of objects passing through the inner solar system all the time, stirring things up. Sometimes we can even see the way our cosmic neighborhood is changing from down here on Earth under the safety blanket we call an atmosphere.

A network of cameras set up around the world to look for meteors caught the latest batch of new objects to relocate to our side of this celestial small town of ours last week.

The Global Meteor Network documented the 18-Aquariids meteor shower for the first time on Aug. 15 and 16. The new shower was reported by veteran astronomer and meteor shower expert Peter Jenniskens, who is affiliated with NASA and the SETI Institute.

All-sky cameras from Florida to Chile to Africa collectively observed three dozen of the newly categorized meteors as they burned up high in the atmosphere.

The unexpected outburst of meteor activity was analyzed and determined to likely be part of a new stream of cosmic debris. The initial report notes that the approach of the meteors appears to overlap with "that of lost comet D/1770 L1 (Lexell) during its returns in 1770 and 1776... perhaps coincidentally."

It's unlikely the new meteor shower will supplant the Perseids in terms of annual showers that humanity anticipates each August, but it's just one more reason to get outside at night and gaze skyward this time of year.
