'Prey' Review: The Predator Movie You've Been Praying For

We know the Predator bleeds and we can kill it. We've known that since Arnold Schwarzenegger took on one of the alien hunters in 1987. Yet, instead of diving further into gritty action fare, every movie since opted for unsatisfying sci-fi ridiculousness.

Prequel movie Prey, which came to Hulu on earlier this month (and Disney Plus Star outside the US), leans away from much of that by turning the clock back to 1719 and pitting Native American warrior Naru (Amber Midthunder) against one of these extraterrestrial creatures. It's the kind of stripped-back approach these movies were crying out for, with director Dan Trachtenberg (who previously helmed 10 Cloverfield Lane) crafting an excellent modern take on the original.

We spend the early part of the movie taking in the rugged, untamed wilderness of the Great Northern Plains with the quietly intense Naru. The beautiful cinematography and hypnotic score make it easy to get lost in her world as she hones her skills as a hunter, gets out of some tight scrapes and explores with her delightful canine sidekick Sarii -- their bond is absolutely lovely.

There are some awesome twists on the Predator's traditional weapons.

The lone Predator is used sparingly as it operates in parallel, establishing itself as the apex hunter. The retro versions of its other tech are fun to see, even if its iconic cloaking device still feels like cheating. 

Their narratives converge in a visceral sequence that'll sear itself into every fan's memory forever, and the movie grabs you by the throat from that moment on as Trachtenberg goes all-out on the action and gore.

However, the final battle is drenched in the shadow of night, making it hard to discern what's happening as both predator and prey unleash an arsenal of gadgets. This makes sense as a contrast to the brightness and clarity of other action scenes, but might require multiple viewings for you to parse all the details.

Every movie hero should have a dog as good as Sarii.

Prey works because its protagonist isn't the kind of muscle-bound, all-guns-blazing action hero these movies are known for, or part of a forgettable ensemble on some vague sci-fi quest. Instead, Naru is a clever, observant human being, and her occasionally tense relationships with her brother and other fellow Comanche Nation tribespeople give the movie emotional resonance. (There's no tension with her dog though. He's perfect.)

They're still a bunch of badasses, though, wielding their bows and spears with tactical precision and moving through the forest like a special forces squad. This kind of imagery can be cliched in modern settings, but it's incredibly visually engaging here.

We get a satisfying escalation in the dangers they face, too, since their beautiful environment is full of deadly natural threats and foreign poachers (whose French dialogue isn't translated with subtitles, cleverly giving us the sense that they're alien invaders, too). It grounds the movie nicely and builds up to the Predator rather than flinging us straight into the sci-fi deep end.

It's also extremely cool that the movie was produced by Jhane Myers, a member of the Comanche nation, and most of the cast are Native American or Canadian First Nation, suggesting an admirable commitment to authenticity. You can also watch with a Comanche dub and subtitles for full cultural immersion, but they weren't available on the prerelease version.

This is easily the best Predator movie we've had since the original, with a well-developed protagonist (and her excellent dog), a rich cultural base and clever use of an iconic movie monster. More sci-fi movies should take this kind of grounded approach, and this franchise should just pit its alien hunters against humans in magnificently realized historical settings from now on. 

For now though, stick around and give Prey a watch.

This $300 Minimalist Phone Finally Allows Me to Live in the Moment

The Light Phone 2 doesn't tout high-end specs like Apple's iPhone 13 or Samsung's Galaxy S22. Instead, its most striking feature is what it lacks. It doesn't have many common phone tools like a camera and internet browser because it's made to be used as sparingly as possible. As a smartphone-fatigued gal who is chronically online, I was instantly fascinated by the minimalist phone and needed to try it. So, I ditched my iPhone 11 for a week and used the $299 Light Phone 2 instead. I wanted to see if it could become my new everyday phone, and it almost could. 

There is no email, web browser, news or camera and no social media apps like Instagram or TikTok. The only feature I initially missed was social media, but that was quickly replaced by getting more comfortable with using my phone less, which is the whole point of this phone. I loved how much more present I was with my friends, family and surroundings as a result. What this phone doesn't have ended up being my favorite part about using it.

What's inside the Light Phone 2? 

The phone comes in two utilitarian colors: light gray and black. It can call, text, be used as a hotspot and alarm. Tools for music, podcasts, navigation and calculator can be added. Additional features, like a voice memo tool, are anticipated for the near future. Unlike most modern phones, it does have a headphone jack. There's also Bluetooth support for connecting wireless headphones and an electronic paper or E Ink display similar to what you would find on e-readers.

The Light Phone 2 works with select US carriers or its own service plan.

Depending on your location, you can choose between a US or international version of the phone. It comes unlocked with 4G LTE connectivity, and while it's compatible with select carriers, Light also has its own service plans for US users. Since this phone isn't compatible with my current smartphone carrier, Xfinity Mobile, I opted for the $70 per month Light service plan with unlimited calls, text messages and data. There's also a $30 per month plan with unlimited calls and text messages and 1GB of data.

Unlike using an iPhone or Android, you oversee your Light service plan, add phone tools, contacts and up to 1GB of audio files onto the phone from a website called the Dashboard. Once files are uploaded through this interface, they appear on the Light Phone in minutes as long as you're connected to Wi-Fi or LTE.

It doesn't have a camera on the back, which forced me to use my actual camera to take photos instead.

What can the Light Phone 2 do? 

While this depends on location, in my experience, LTE and hotspot tethering work seamlessly. When I connect my laptop to my personal Light hotspot network, I'm able to stream videos just as easily as when I'm connected to Wi-Fi. The phone's 4G LTE works well for quickly applying updates, importing Dashboard files onto the device, and accessing directions.

I also enjoyed the music experience on this phone. One GB of audio is enough to store music for a week, and I really liked the focused listening that came with not having a seemingly endless library at my fingertips. It made me more intentional when selecting music for download and more present when listening to the songs. Since I knew they were all I had, I listened more closely and, as a result, enjoyed the music more. The songs appear in one playlist, but the search bar makes it easy to find specific artists and songs. New podcast episodes automatically import once a series is selected from the Dashboard if the device is connected to Wi-Fi or LTE.

As for battery life, with regular usage, I went one to two days before I had to charge. However, if I did something more data-intensive, like importing files from the Dashboard on LTE, I'd have to plug in twice a day. When it comes to directions, Bluetooth, the alarm and calculator, these tools work well and exactly as you'd expect.

The only feature I never quite adjusted to was texting because of the phone's E Ink display. On one hand, this screen doesn't radiate blue light and can be read outside because it doesn't create a glare, which I love. After all, looking at blue light can cause stress on the eyes and can have an adverse effect on your sleep.

But the E Ink screen is also less responsive than a typical phone's, and I couldn't get used to its slower typing pace. Sending a simple text became pretty time consuming as I waited for each letter to input. However, since I last tested the phone, autocorrect, copy-paste and auto-period features have been added, so that could help compose messages more quickly. Additionally, the phone's voice-to-text option is very accurate, which can also help speed up texting if you'd rather speak than type.

The Light Phone 2 currently sells for $299, which is a lot less expensive than my iPhone but more expensive than many budget phone models. Unless you're truly seeking out a simpler type of phone, Samsung's Galaxy A series offers several options well under $300 -- like the $250 Galaxy A13, which includes 5G support. And if you're not ready to give up your smartphone but want to use it less, maybe consider turning on screen time controls.

I loved using the Light Phone 2 because its features are generally strong and what it doesn't have allowed me to live in the moment in a way I'm not used to while using my iPhone. That being said, it doesn't really make sense for me to make the switch permanently because I work in social media and need some form of mobile access to apps like Instagram and TikTok to stay up on trends.

While it isn't feasible for me to exclusively use the Light Phone 2 at this point, this challenge did inspire me to think about using the Light Phone 2 as my primary phone and my iPhone as a secondary phone. At the very least, it's helped me be more intentional with how I interact with my smartphone. Less time spent scrolling aimlessly on TikTok, and more face-to-face time with family, friends and the world around me.

"Dehydration is an extremely common cause of fatigue and cognitive impairment. Research has demonstrated that when you restrict fluids from a person, the most common symptoms include fatigue, increased sleepiness, confusion and decreased alertness," says Titgemeier. "Start your morning with a large glass of water to help support energy and cognition."

2. Eat healthy foods that support energy

When you're tired or groggy, the last thing you want to do is worry about whipping up a healthy breakfast. But the most convenient foods don't do any favors for our health. One way to help fight grogginess and fatigue is make sure you're fueling your body properly.

Titgemeier recommends focusing on nutrient-dense choices like eggs and smoothies. Both are quite simple to prepare, but will support your body better than a greasy fast food fix. "Egg whites contain protein and water, and the egg yolks are where you get all of the other nutrients such as CoQ10, vitamin E and other B vitamins. CoQ10 is an antioxidant that is essential for energy production, as are the B vitamins," Titgemeier says.

Making your own smoothies at home is relatively simple and inexpensive, and you can customize all of the ingredients to your preferences. "Smoothies are a great way to load up on nutrients and antioxidants in foods like berries, chia seeds and flax seeds that help to create steady energy throughout the entire day. I would specifically recommend adding a leafy green vegetable like spinach for a great source of B vitamins and alpha lipoic acid. Both of these nutrients are very important for energy production," Titgemeier says.

3. Exercise 

While it's not a good idea to exercise while in a sleep deficit, you don't have to remain totally sedentary. In fact, incorporating gentle exercise like walking and stretching can help you feel more alert and refreshed, without taxing your body.

Just go easy on yourself -- pushing your body through a tough workout when you have not slept well is a recipe for burnout and feeling worse. 

4. Take a power nap 

When your body is screaming at you for more sleep, don't fight it. Taking a short power nap can help you feel more refreshed and energized if you do it right. The key to taking a nap and not waking up cranky and more exhausted is to take a shorter nap (about 20 minutes) and be sure to take it earlier in the day, or at least not close to when you normally go to sleep.

T-Mobile adds new Magenta Max plan with no smartphone throttling even when on 5G

T-Mobile is adding a new plan to its lineup, this time designed for its most demanding data users. Called Magenta Max, the new plan will replace the existing Magenta Plus offering and become available starting on Feb. 24. The new Max offering notably features no smartphone data throttling regardless of how much 4G or 5G data you use in a month. 

Mobile hotspot data, however, will be slowed to "3G speeds" if you exceed 40GB in a month. The Magenta Plus plan previously limited high-speed mobile hotspot data to 20GB in a month. 

T-Mobile says the new plan will launch at a "limited time" price of $47 per line per month for three lines with automatic payments, a $10 discount from its normal $57-per-line-per-month rate. A single line is $85 per month with autopay, with all plans including taxes and fees in the pricing. 

Other features for Max include a subscription to Netflix's Standard plan (normally $14 per month), which allows for HD streaming if you have two or more lines, while a subscription to Netflix's non-HD Basic plan ($9 per month) will be included for single Max lines. Those with the new plan will have access to unlimited GoGo in-flight Wi-Fi and texting and be able to take advantage of the same faster international data speeds that were offered on Magenta Plus when traveling abroad (though speeds are still capped at 256kbps). 

You also will be able to stream on your phone in 4K UHD (as opposed to HD), so long as you have the proper content and a phone with a high-resolution display. 

While it is replacing the Magenta Plus option, T-Mobile Chief Marketing Officer Matt Staneff tells CNET that the company won't automatically switch those with Plus onto the new Max plan. "They'll have to choose to get it," he says, "and that's been a long-standing policy of ours [...] we don't change your plan, only you can change your plan."

To try and lure customers from Verizon and AT&T the carrier will be offering a "zero cost to switch" promotion that will allow those who are financing a phone to switch to T-Mobile and have it cover up to $650 per line off of the remaining installment plan while letting you keep the phone. Like the discounted rate the switcher offer is a "limited time" deal, but Staneff wouldn't disclose how long the time period would last, saying only that it will be around "until we change it going forward." 

Beyond the Max change, those with T-Mobile's main Magenta plan will also see some improvements without needing to adjust their plan, including having up to 100GB of high-speed monthly data on their phone and 5GB of high-speed mobile hotspot data per month.

Millions of people think the latter sounds pretty good. Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp hit over 15 million downloads in the first six days since its worldwide release on Nov. 22 on the App Store and Google Play, according to data from SensorTower.

WhatsApp changes Last Seen feature, hides from strangers by default

Messaging platform WhatsApp recently changed its Last Seen feature, which will no longer display to unknown contacts by default. So if you haven't chatted with someone before, they'll no longer be able to see information about your activity on the app.

Before, you'd have to manually change your Last Seen settings to "My Contacts" if you wanted to hide your activity from unknown users. But now the feature will default to only displaying your status to your contacts. As WABetaInfo pointed out, this also means third-party apps will no longer be able to monitor your status.

"We are excited to be rolling out an update that improves the privacy and security of our users by making it harder for people you don't know and haven't chatted with to view your Last Seen and Online status on WhatsApp," a WhatsApp spokesperson told CNET by email. "This will not change anything between you and your friends, family, and businesses who you know and have connected with."

This isn't the only privacy-focused change WhatsApp has made recently. Last week, the company gave its users the option to make their messages disappear by default after a day, a week or a few months. 

Privacy has been a key topic for WhatsApp in 2021, with the company facing scrutiny at the start of the year after it announced changes to its privacy policy. The company was later fined $260 million for privacy violations in the EU. And its parent company, Meta, has been under fire for valuing profits over the privacy of its Facebook and WhatsApp users.

The recent changes appear to be intended to assuage some of those privacy concerns by concealing your activity from people you don't know.

Twitter Shareholders to Vote in September on Musk Deal: What You Need to Know

Twitter shareholders are expected to vote in September on billionaire Elon Musk's $44 billion proposal to buy the influential social network after he tried to back out of the deal.

Twitter scheduled a meeting for shareholders to vote on the proposal on Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. PT, according to a regulatory filing on Tuesday. The company's board of directors is urging shareholders to approve the deal.

"We are committed to closing the merger on the price and terms agreed upon with Mr. Musk. Your vote at the special meeting is critical to our ability to complete the merger," the filing stated. Under the deal, shareholders will receive $54.20 in cash for every share of Twitter's stock they own. 

Twitter and Musk are currently embroiled in a legal battle because the billionaire said in July he no longer wanted to buy Twitter and take the company private. Musk's attempt to back out of acquiring the social media site has raised concerns about Twitter's future. 

Musk has said the deal can't move forward until he gets proof that fewer than 5% of Twitter's 229 million daily users in the first quarter were fake or spam-focused, an important metric for understanding Twitter's ads business. But Twitter alleges in a lawsuit against Musk that the billionaire is trying to pull out of the deal because his personal wealth has fallen so the acquisition has become more expensive for him. 

Here's what you need to know about the ongoing saga between Musk and Twitter:

Why is Musk trying to end the deal?

Musk, who leads Tesla and Space X, appears to have concerns about the future of Twitter's business, even though he said at a TED2022 conference that he didn't care about the "economics" of buying Twitter.

A letter sent by Musk's lawyer claims Twitter violated parts of its agreement with Musk, and it outlines information the company allegedly failed to provide the billionaire, including about the social network's calculations of daily users. Twitter makes most of its money from ad sales, so the number of people who can see ads is an important metric for the company.

"This information is fundamental to Twitter's business and financial performance and is necessary to consummate the transactions contemplated by the Merger Agreement because it is needed to ensure Twitter's satisfaction of the conditions to closing, to facilitate Mr. Musk's financing and financial planning for the transaction, and to engage in transition planning for the business," the letter said.

Since Musk reached an agreement with Twitter, the company's stock price has fallen and there are fears about a potential recession. Twitter has fired key executives, frozen hiring and laid off about 30% of its talent acquisition team. 

Twitter isn't buying Musk's explanation and alleges in the lawsuit his information requests were designed to "designed to try to tank the deal."

Why did Musk want to buy Twitter in the first place?

Musk is an avid user of the service but also one of its loudest critics.

Musk tweeted a poll to his followers in March that asked whether users believed Twitter was protecting free speech. He said the poll results, in which roughly 70% of 2 million respondents answered "no," would be "very important." 

"Given that Twitter serves as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy. What should be done?" Musk said in a follow-up tweet. Then he made an offer to buy Twitter, noting that he believed Twitter needed to be private to accomplish his goal.

The guarantee of free speech in the US Constitution's First Amendment applies to the government censoring speech but not to companies such as Twitter, which have their own rules about what isn't allowed on their sites.

Musk referenced free speech again when Twitter announced the deal in April. He also said he wanted to enhance Twitter with new features and promised he would make the service's algorithms open source, defeat spam bots and authenticate all humans.

"Twitter has tremendous potential," Musk wrote. "I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it."

Progressives have criticized social media companies for failing to crack down on harmful content such as hate speech and harassment. Conservatives claim their speech is being censored. (Twitter has long denied allegations it censors conservatives.) 

On April 19, Musk tweeted that he thinks social media policies "are good if the most extreme 10% on left and right are equally unhappy." He's also said he would reverse the ban on former US President Donald Trump who was booted from the platform after the Jan. 6 Capitol Hill riots because of concerns about inciting violence. Trump has said he doesn't plan to return to Twitter even if the company lifts the ban.

What has Twitter's response been?

Twitter says closing the deal is in the best interest of shareholders.

Initially, it seemed like Twitter was going to turn down the offer but the board started to take it more seriously when Musk offered details about how he would finance the deal. The company had adopted a defensive strategy known as the "poison pill" that would make it tougher for Musk to add to his stake in the company. The tactic allowed Twitter to accept a competing offer, if one emerged.

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey tweeted on April 15 that "as a public company, twitter has always been 'for sale.' that's the real issue." Twitter has dealt with leadership changes, layoffs and activist investors as a public company. After Twitter announced the deal, Dorsey said he didn't believe that anyone should own or run Twitter but taking it back from Wall Street is the "correct first step."

"Solving for the problem of it being a company however, Elon is the singular solution I trust," Dorsey tweeted. "I trust his mission to extend the light of consciousness."

A filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission also shed more light on how the deal came together. Musk spoke to Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey in March about the future of social media and decentralizing social media so users get more control over their data and what content they see.

Musk's effort to acquire Twitter has been a bumpy one. Musk rejected a seat on Twitter's board before offering to take the company private. Musk also had a conversation with Dorsey in early April in which Dorsey said he thought Twitter, a publicly traded company, would be better off as a private company, the filing shows.

How did Musk plan to pay for Twitter?

Even for Musk, who's worth about $220 billion, buying Twitter requires some financial juggling.

In an initial SEC filing on April 20, Musk said he had personally committed about $21 billion in equity financing. He also secured about $25.5 billion in debt financing through Morgan Stanley and other financial institutions. 

Since then, Musk has raised capital by selling $8.5 billion in Tesla shares, presumably for the deal, and lined up $7.1 billion from outside investors. According to a May 4 filing, those investors include Sequoia Capital and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison. (Ellison sits on Tesla's board of directors.) Saudi Arabian investor Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud also agreed to pledge his stake of roughly 35 million shares to the deal.

On May 24, Musk pledged more equity to the deal. He's now willing to put $33.5 billion toward the acquisition.

What happens next?

Twitter shareholders are scheduled vote on the deal at a special meeting in September. Meanwhile, Twitter is asking the Delaware Court of Chancery to enforce its agreement with Musk. A trial is expected to happen over five days in October. Killing the deal could cost Musk $1 billion because of a termination fee that's part of the agreement, according to an SEC filing on April 25.
