Torched Marie Callender's pie became a meme, but here's what really happened

Memes come out of nowhere, and they don't take holidays off. Last Thanksgiving, a Georgia grandmother named Sharon Weiss burned a Marie Callender's pumpkin pie, and posted a photo to the food company's Facebook page, bitterly writing, "Thanks Marie Calendar for ruining Thanksgiving dessert." 

But this was no ordinary holiday dinner mistake. The pie in the photo looked like it had been dug out of the ruins of Pompeii. The crust was black, the filling was black, and in a delightful addition, the top of the blackened filling had been broken to show the softer -- but still totally torched -- filling underneath. 

Social-media users were quick to jump on the disaster, pointing out that even Yule logs don't get this burned, and they sit directly in the fireplace.

Here's the update you've been burning for. Sharon Weiss and Marie Callender's have made up, and Weiss told me she now knows why her pie ended up looking like it was thrown into Mount Doom from Lord of the Rings.

"When I first took the pie out and saw how burnt it was, I immediately thought there was something wrong with either the pie or the directions," Weiss told me. "My comment to Marie Callender's was impulsive."

But then Weiss tried to bake a Thanksgiving turkey breast, which also came out looking cremated, "leading me to realize it may be a problem with the oven," Weiss said.

Before calling an appliance repair shop, Weiss' husband, Josh, discovered the mistake was user error -- exactly as the internet had declared.

"Somehow, some way, the baking temperature had been changed from Fahrenheit to Celsius," Weiss told me. "The result was that when I set the temperature to 375, it was actually closer to 700 degrees Fahrenheit." (707, to be exact.)

That's right -- it wasn't Marie Callender's fault at all. Weiss' simple pumpkin pie met its death in a SEVEN HUNDRED DEGREE oven.

Or ... close to it. Most home ovens top out at around 500 degrees F or so, but even if Weiss' oven didn't reach 700 F, it was still cranking out much more heat than that poor pie required.

"We were able to return to Fahrenheit by just pushing a couple of buttons on the stove," Weiss said. "Problem solved."

But before this Fahrenheit/Celsius revelation, Weiss' impulsive Facebook comment blaming Marie Callender's had gone viral online. People were using the Facebook "marked safe" designation to mark themselves safe from Weiss' pie. Someone joked that Weiss would be asked to bring ice to the next holiday gathering, using a photo of charcoal to show "Sharon's ice."

"Did you get a free urn with the purchase of this pie?" someone asked.

Weiss got alerted early that her post had been noticed.

"My daughter called me and said, 'Mom, you've gone viral! All of my friends are asking if this is you!'" Weiss said. 

But instead of sitting around fuming at her newfound fame, Weiss rolled with it. She called Marie Callender's, and says "we collectively agreed to take my post down." And now you can't find a bigger fan of the company than the woman who once thought it ruined her Thanksgiving.

"It was very clear to me from the beginning that they wanted to make things right," Weiss told me. The company posted a Christmas greeting joking about the burn, with the hashtag #SharonSomePie. And Weiss filmed a video for a company promotion for National Pie Day, displaying a giant timer and telling viewers to set their ovens for "Fahrenheit, not Sharonheit."

As for the infamous T-Day itself, Weiss says that once the oven temperature was switched back to the familiar Fahrenheit, she baked another pie (yes, Marie Callender's again), "and it was delicious."

Not only that, but her family had a "Thanksgiving redo" a few weeks after the holiday. This time, her adult children took care of all the cooking and baking, "and it was stress-free."

But what happened to the volcano-seared original pumpkin pie?

"Actually," Weiss admits, "the pie was put outside ... and disappeared."

Whether it's a Nissan Sentra Midnight Edition or Rolls-Royce Cullinan Black Badge, automakers are finding lots of success with dark-finish trim packages no matter the vehicle type or price. Lucid is the latest to offer this subdued styling option, debuting a new Stealth Look package on Monday that'll be available on its full range of Air EVs.

Lucid says a total of 35 exterior components are changed for the Air Stealth Look, including the mirror caps and glass roof trim, as well as the frames around the headlights and taillights. Many elements use what Lucid calls a "stealth polished" finish, while others are done up in gloss black or satin graphite trim.

Depending on the model, Lucid offers 20- or 21-inch wheels specific to the Stealth Look package. You can also pair this option with any of the Air's available exterior colors, which for the moment is limited to white, black, silver, gray and dark red.

Regardless of which Air sedan you choose, Stealth Look is a $6,000 option. Lucid will show the Air Stealth Look to the public during Monterey Car Week later this month, and production is expected to kick off in early 2023.

Spotify has answered Neil Young's challenge. The service deleted the artist's entire back catalog this week after Young offered an "it's-him-or-me" ultimatum, forcing the streaming giant to choose between him and podcaster Joe Rogan.

Rogan's show, a Spotify exclusive, has been repeatedly criticized by medical experts for being a source of COVID-19 misinformation to his millions of listeners. So where does that leave Young fans? 

There are still plenty of music streaming services you can hear the work of the rock legend, including one you may not have heard of.

Young has been banging the "hi-res is the best way to hear music" drum for a long time -- we still remember when he said Amazon was going to change the Earth forever. While Spotify has yet to unveil its higher-quality streaming service, there are a number of competitors that will gladly stream his songs at the highest possible bit rate. 

Whether you're looking for a Spotify alternative because you're a fan of Young or because you support his anti-Rogan stance, here are your best options: 

• Free (with ads) option: YouTube: The video streamer is always a great place to find music, including Young's. Just know that Rogan's show is on YouTube, too. 
• Neil Young Archives : The singer's Pono player and hi-res music store may have come and gone, but it has been replaced by a service called the Neil Young Archives. For $20 a year you can stream all of Neil Young's back catalog in hi-res or standard 320kbps quality. There are apps for Android, iOS and the BluOS music system.
• Apple Music -- As the second-largest streaming provider in the world, Apple Music has the rights to Young and millions of other artists besides. Users are able to stream his music in standard lossless or hi-res (Master) quality all for the standard price of $10 a month.
• Tidal -- Tidal has long been associated with providing better deals for artists, and now that it's under new ownership it has put its money where its mouth is. What does that mean for fans of Young and other bands? If you choose the $20 subscription then 10% of your money goes directly to your highest streamed artist that month. Young's back catalog is available in hi-res if you choose the top tier, or in CD-quality lossless for the $10 tier.
• Qobuz -- A relatively new entrant to the states, but its hi-res option is cheaper than Tidal's from $13 a month and doesn't require a specialized decoder. You can also buy his digital albums from the Qobuz store, and at a competitive rate  
• Amazon Music Unlimited  -- For $8 a month, if you're a Prime member, this is the cheapest way you can stream Young in hi-res.

Other services that are also still streaming Young include Deezer, Napster, YouTube Music, and Pandora Premium.  In addition, SiriusXM has revived its Neil Young radio channel.

This latest standoff is likely just the beginning of a long-coming reckoning for Spotify and for streaming services in general, as the industry grapples with issues such as exclusivity, artist payments and social responsibility. This may be the first big split between musicians and podcasters, but it's unlikely to be the last as more and more people vote with their clicks -- and their wallets.

A new trailer for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet revealed two new eye-catching legendaries on Wednesday, but a much smaller, rounder pocket monster has stolen the spotlight. Its name? "Lechonk."

The normal-type hog Pokemon appears briefly in the second official trailer for the new duo of Pokemon games, which are due out Nov. 18. The Lechonk, which is level 2, walks out of a patch of grass and uses the move tackle.

"LECHONK GETS A VERY BIG YES FROM ME," wrote one person in the comments under the trailer.

The appeal of this Pokemon appears to be twofold. For one, its name is ridiculous in the best possible way. And with its stoutness and yellow teardrop designs under its eyes, viewers are pointing out the obvious: "Lechonk is already the cutest Pokemon in this gen to me," another person wrote in a YouTube comment.

The Lechonk love is very real.

"Lechonk is 100% going to be on my team," said one future Pokemon wielder in the comments. "A Pokemon being named LECHONK is truly a historical moment," wrote another.

The new trailer also highlighted multiplayer options in the game and the legendary Pokemon Koraidon (Scarlet) and Miraidon (Violet). Here's every new Pokemon we know of so far, including, of course, Lechonk. Evolved forms of Lechonk (if there are any) are yet to be determined, but that hasn't stopped people from speculating. "I hope Lechonk evolves into Lethicc," wrote one person under the trailer.

Car insurance is getting more expensive. The cost of car insurance has continued to climb throughout 2022, and increased another 1.3% in July, according to the Consumer Price Index, a key indicator of inflation.

Inflation aside, car insurance was already rising as of last year. Many major car insurers started receiving approval for substantial rate increases at the close of 2021, raising premiums anywhere from 3% to 12%, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. To top it off, gas prices have also hit record highs this year, making driving more expensive overall.

If you're tired of paying high car insurance premiums, we have a few tips you can try to reduce your auto insurance costs and add some extra breathing room to your budget. 

1. Raise your deductible 

Increasing your deductible -- your out-of-pocket cost before your insurance will pick up the bill on a claim -- can lower your premium. This move might make sense if you aren't driving much right now, do not have a history of accidents on the road or if you need to reduce your monthly costs to stay insured. Doing this could cost you later if you're in an accident, though, as you'll have to dish out more money before your carrier covers damages. You should make sure you have enough money to pay the higher deductible if you do end up in an accident.

2. Consider lower coverage for older vehicles

Older cars may not deserve the same insurance attention as your shiny new Tesla or all of the bells and whistles of a Mercedes-type policy. If your car is on its last go-round, you may want to cut out collision coverage or comprehensive coverage for that vehicle, both of which cover damages to your car.

Whether you should drop either coverage depends on the value of your car and the relative cost to insure it. Experts suggest that if your car is worth less than 10 times the annual premium, buying coverage for that vehicle may not be a cost-effective option. One of the quickest ways to check the value is by scrolling through Kelley Blue Book online. For example, say your annual premium is $1,600; 10 times that would be $16,000. If your car is worth less than $16,000, then it might make sense to lower insurance coverage for that car.

3. Use public transit or carpool when you can

Carriers may offer discounts if you have a low mileage count, meaning you drive less than the average number of miles per year compared to other Americans. Typically, you'd be considered a low-mileage driver if you drive less than 7,500 miles per year, but this isn't a bright-line rule. What actually determines if you're a low-mileage driver depends on what state you live in, your age and gender.

How much you can save depends on individual factors, in addition to the car insurance company you sign a policy with. State Farm offers one of the cheapest monthly premiums at $128 for low-mileage drivers, according to one analysis. 

If there is mass transit in your area, taking a bus a few days per week (or carpooling with others), could make you eligible for low-mileage discounts. If you don't live in an area with mass transit, you might also consider carpooling to work or school to bring your mileage down.

And if you transitioned to working or studying from home since the start of the pandemic and still haven't shifted back to an in-person workplace, contact your carrier to let them know -- and take advantage of any savings.

4. Bundle your insurance policies

One of the most straightforward ways to save money on insurance is by bundling your home and auto insurance, meaning you buy multiple insurance policies from the same company.  

Allstate , Liberty Mutual and GEICO each offer premium discounts for bundling -- depending on which policies and coverages you buy together. You can get discounts on your premium anywhere from 5% to 25%, depending on the provider. 

5. Shop around for car insurance rates

Maybe you're working from home permanently and need less coverage. Or perhaps you're returning to the office and need more coverage now. Whatever your situation may be, it's always a good idea to shop around to ensure you're getting the best rates, as other carriers might offer bigger discounts or lower premiums in general.

6. Explore safe driving discounts

If you pride yourself on being a safe traveler, you're in luck. Carriers offer discounts for safe driving and modest claims history, and there are a number of discounts to take advantage of here. Call your carrier to ask how you can enroll in these types of programs. Once successfully enrolled, you should see your premium go down on your next bill.

State Farm, for example, offers both accident-free discounts, where you'll get a discount if you've gone at least three continuous years without an accident, and good driving discounts, which lowers your premium when you go three or more years without moving violations or at-fault accidents. 

Telematics insurance programs are also a great way to obtain safe drivers discounts, and it'll factor in low-mileage discounts, too. These programs monitor your mileage and driving behavior through a phone app or a car plug-in device. Call your carrier to enroll in the plan, and while discounts vary by carrier and state, you could be looking at savings as large as 30% off your premium. You'll start at a base rate that will be adjusted depending on the telematics report, which will include factors like your average speed and braking habits. For example, State Farm will review your telematics data every six months to determine how safe your driving has been, and based on those measurements, it'll apply a discount to your policy ranging anywhere from 5% to 50%, according to Bankrate.

7. Find a less expensive car

If you're looking to buy a new or used car, consider comparing the insurance costs among different vehicles. Auto insurance premiums are calculated through a variety of factors, and some of those factors are based on the car itself, including the car's price, repair costs and general safety record.

"This is the thing that people forget about: You can buy a Honda or a Kia, and it's less expensive, or you could buy a Mercedes or a Tesla -- it's going to be more expensive," said Janet Ruiz, a chartered property casualty underwriter and director of strategic communications at the Insurance Information Institute. 

And the difference in the cost of insurance for a Mercedes compared to a Honda is stark: The average cost to insure a Mercedes-Benz is about $4,505 annually, compared to an average of $2,151 annually for a Honda. That means you'll pay an average of $179 on a monthly basis for the Honda compared to $375 for the Mercedes.

'Ghostbusters' Ecto-1 wheelchair costume revs up Halloween

We first met young Jeremy last year when he conquered Halloween in a Star Wars snowspeeder. Jeremy and his dad Ryan Scott Miller are back with another mind-blowing costume for 2016. It's the Ecto-1 car from the original "Ghostbusters."

Jeremy is 9 years old and gets around in a wheelchair due to spina bifida, a condition that hampers spinal cord development. His Ecto-1 fits around his wheelchair and puts him at the wheel of the iconic phantasm-fighting machine.

When it comes to costumes, this is about as far from a bed-sheet ghost as you can get. The car replica has working lights and a speaker for playing the "Ghostbusters" theme music and siren. A fully loaded roof rack carries cannisters, a ladder, a satellite dish and a warning light. Everything is there, right down to the big red fins and logo on the side.

The completely custom costume took a month and a half worth of weekends to build. "There were so many challenging parts to this costume, which is part of the fun, but by far getting the curve of the body was the hardest part. We had a couple of failed attempts until we got it right," says Miller.

Jeremy is a huge "Ghostbusters" fan. He's seen all three movies and watches the cartoon series, as well. Jeremy and his dad were thrilled to discover that the "Extreme Ghostbusters" animated series from 1997 features a paraplegic main character in a wheelchair.

Jeremy isn't just using the car for trick-or-treat transportation. He and his dad took the vehicle to the Rady Children's Hospital Halloween party in San Diego, California, after an invitation from the Children's Miracle Network, an organization dedicated to funding hospitals and medical research.

"It was nice to be able to bring some smiles to kids, because we know all too well how tough long hospital stays can be," says Miller.
