LimeWire Will Be Resurrected as NFT Marketplace

Former peer-to-peer file-sharing company LimeWire will relaunch in May as a specialist in NFTs, the company announced on Wednesday. The brand will dive into the marketplace for the digital collectibles with a focus on music, entertainment content and art, according to a press release. An NFT is due to drop later this year with a special reward system. 

LimeWire first landed on the scene in 2000, enabling people to share music, movies and other content online for free, and it boasted tens of millions of monthly users. After facing mounting pressure and litigation from the music and film industries over piracy claims, the company shuttered in 2011. But now it's 2022. 

Brothers Paul and Julian Zehetmayr bought the rights to the company with plans to roll out the platform in a way that connects artists and fans. This version of LimeWire isn't affiliated with anyone from the original company, but the pair hope to capitalize on the brand's name. 

Rather than jump into the music streaming game, the company is aiming to go big in the burgeoning NFT world. It's a zone where people can buy and sell digital things like Pokemon-themed property or hop on the Bored Ape Yacht Club train. One can spend or make anywhere from a few thousand to millions of dollars. Typically, people buy NFTs with cryptocurrency, but LimeWire wants to make it easier for customers by offering multiple payment options -- including crypto and credit cards. It's partnered with Wyre to facilitate payments. 

According to the media release, "fans and collectors will be able to buy and trade a variety of music-related assets, such as limited editions, pre-release music, unreleased demos, graphical artwork, exclusive live versions, as well as digital merchandise and backstage content." LimeWire has a number of mainstream artists on deck to participate, and its board includes members from the management teams for H.E.R. and Wu-Tang Clan.

Currently, LimeWire has a waitlist that you can sign up for if you're interested in its May launch. The token system will act as a "loyalty reward program" of sorts for token holders. Artists and other creators can also register for the waitlist to receive early access to LimeWire's marketplace.

Keurig coffee: 4 tips to make it taste better

Keurig coffee makers  are ridiculously convenient. Drop in a pod, press the button and seconds later you have a steaming cup of joe in your hands. Quality and flavor, on the other hand, are not Keurig's strengths. Pods can spend months on store shelves or in your pantry, a far cry from what you'll get with beans that are freshly roasted and ground. Worse, Keurig K-cups contain less grounds than needed for brewing ideal java.

That said, there are definitely things you can do to get the most out of your machine. From preheating it and reconsidering your water supply to choosing the right settings and accessories, this guide has tips you'll certainly want to try.

Use water that's pure

You can't make a good cup of coffee without using clean, pure water. One way to confirm the quality of your water supply is to check with your local utility. That's no problem here in Louisville, Kentucky, where the city water company takes its mission seriously. After all, superb bourbon requires water that's top-notch. 

Another way to check your tap water is to test it yourself. The easiest method is to use a TDS meter. These handheld devices measure the total amount of dissolved solids, or TDS, in water by checking for electrical conductivity. The more impurities present, the more conductive a water sample will be.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the maximum TDS level for drinking water should not exceed 500 parts per million. Anything higher is associated with water hardness, staining and a salty taste. 

A quick reading at my kitchen tap came in at a solid TDS of 185 ppm. While that number is slightly outside the Specialty Coffee Association's brewing regulations, it's well below EPA guidelines. To get that value down even further I could use bottled or filtered water.

Preheat the machine

Extracting flavor from coffee grounds is a tricky job, so before you brew your first cup of the day, it's a good idea to give your Keurig machine some assistance by preheating it. The reason why is simple: Good coffee requires water that's hot enough to extract flavor the moment it hits the grounds -- ideally between 195 and 203 degrees F (90-95 C). 

The easiest way to help that to happen is by running a pod-free brew cycle first. It sounds like a minor step, but it makes a difference. Water that exited my Keurig machine's second cycle was a full 10 degrees hotter than the first time around.

There was only 11.1 grams of ground coffee in this K-cup.

Brew it stronger

One key failing of Keurig coffee pods is that they contain a relatively small amount of coffee. For example, my Keurig Donut Shop K-cup came with 11.1 grams (0.39 ounces) of grounds. For a standard 12-ounce cup of joe, I typically use roughly twice as much (20 grams). Anything less than that tastes weak and watery.

If your Keurig brew gives you multiple cup size options, choose the smallest available to eke out a more concentrated brew. For instance, a 12-ounce cup brewed from one Donut Shop pod had a low TDS percentage of 0.8%. When I made a smaller, 8-ounce cup with an identical K-cup, I measured a TDS percentage of 1%.

That's still below the SCA's golden cup standard (1.15-1.35% TDS), but even so, it was an improvement over cup No. 1 -- and one that I could taste. 

Put fresh coffee in your pods

One last, simple way of getting around the deficiencies of disposable K-cups is to skip them altogether and get a reusable one that you fill with your own coffee grounds. Plenty of companies sell them -- even Keurig hawks its own model. There are lots of different styles to choose from, too. You'll find everything from inexpensive plastic K-cups all the way up to fancy, stainless steel K-cups.

You'll no doubt brew better coffee than before with an accessory like that (not to mention the environmental benefits). For best results, get a good coffee grinder and grind your own beans right before you brew, and use about twice as much of the grounds as you'll find in a typical K-cup. Your taste buds will thank you.

WHO Declares Monkeypox Outbreak a Global Health Emergency

The World Health Organization on Saturday declared the monkeypox outbreak a global health emergency, as the number of cases, and countries reporting them, has climbed over the last month.

"We have an outbreak that has spread around the world rapidly, through new modes of transmission, about which we understand too little," WHO Director General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said during a press conference.

Tedros said there are now more than 16,000 reported cases from 75 countries, up from 3,040 reported cases from 47 countries a month ago. Five people have died as a result of the current outbreak, Tedros said. About 2,900 cases have been confirmed throughout the United States and Puerto Rico, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Tedros said, however, that we have the tools to bring the outbreak under control, and he called on countries to carry out a coordinated response. That includes implementing measures for halting transmission and protecting vulnerable groups; increasing the monitoring of the outbreak's progress; speeding up research into vaccines and treatments; and developing recommendations for international travel.

Monkeypox spreads between people primarily through contact with infectious sores, scabs or bodily fluids, according to the CDC, but it can also spread through prolonged face-to-face contact via respiratory droplets or by touching contaminated clothing or bedding. Anyone can be infected with monkeypox, but so far many of the outbreak cases have involved men who have sex with men.

"Although I'm declaring a public health emergency of international concern," Tedros said, "for the moment, this is an outbreak that's concentrated among men who have sex with men, especially those with multiple sexual partners. That means that this is an outbreak that can be stopped with the right strategies in the right groups."

Tedros cautioned that "stigma and discrimination can be as dangerous as any virus" and he called on countries to adopt measures that "protect the health, human rights and dignity of affected communities."

He also said countries should work closely with those communities to develop services and outreach programs, and he said the WHO intends to partner with civil organizations, including groups with experience working with people who have HIV, to fight discrimination and stigma.

Gay and bisexual communities tend to have particularly "high awareness and rapid health-seeking behavior when it comes to their and their communities' sexual health," Dr. Hans Henri P. Kluge, the WHO's regional director for Europe, said in a statement at the end of May, noting that those who sought early health care services should be applauded.

A monkeypox infection typically begins with flulike symptoms, including fatigue, intense headache, fever and swollen lymph nodes. Within one to three days of a fever developing, according to the CDC, a rash or sores develop and can be located pretty much anywhere on the body, including the hands, genitals, face, chest and inside of the mouth.

Notably, some people never experience flulike symptoms, the CDC says, and people may experience all or only a few of the typical monkeypox symptoms. For safer sex and social gatherings where people may be in close contact with other peoples' bodies, the CDC has a fact sheet for practices to consider.  

Close contact is a key element in the transmission of monkeypox. That, along with the fact that the virus that causes monkeypox appears to have a slower reproduction rate than the COVID-19 virus, sets it apart from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Tom Inglesby, director of the Center for Health Security at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said last month at a media briefing.

Motorola Moto G4 Play review: Our second-favorite super-budget phone

If the Moto G4 didn't exist, the stepped-down (and even cheaper) Motorola Moto G4 Play would be the deal of the century. For just $150 (or $100 for Amazon Prime members who submit to Amazon Prime ads, like this), £130 and AU$279, you get a budget phone that's surprisingly pleasant to use, for a rock-bottom price.

But there is a Moto G4, and it comes with a larger screen, a better camera and a much faster processor. Best yet, it only costs a little more -- $50 or £39 -- than the G4 Play (it doesn't sell in Australia, but the G4 Plus does). So for my money, I'd invest a little more and get the G4 over the G4 Play.

That said, the G4 Play is actually a great budget find on its own merit. I never encountered a moment where I thought, "I can't use this." The G4 Play is the Toyota Corolla of phones; it has that wonderful balance of price and value to do real-world things like text and email, upload photos and snap pictures of cute little Fifi.

The Moto G4 Play is pretty much identical to the Moto G4, just a tad smaller (see how specs compare over the page). Despite having a relatively low 1,280x720-pixel resolution for its 5-inch screen, images and websites looked fairly crisp and sharp. But even with adaptive brightness enabled, you might have trouble reading in the noontime sun.

Then there's the 8-megapixel rear facing camera. Honestly, I was surprised by its better-than-average performance. Is it the best phone camera out there? No way. But in good light, it takes good photos. In mixed light, it takes OK photos. And in low light, it struggles and images tend to have some noise. Skin tones looked fairly natural in selfies, and for those who like such things, there is an optional beauty mode. The Moto G4 Play shot serviceable 1,920x1,080-pixel resolution video at 30 frames per second (fps). Take a look at some of the snaps I took with the Moto G4 Play in the gallery below.

During my time with the G4 Play, I found it responsive in general use. I didn't experience any lags when opening or switching apps. However, playing games like Pokemon Go and Monument Valley really slowed things down, and so did taking panoramic photos. On the plus side, this little guy gets great battery life. In our looping video drain test, the Moto G4 Play lasted 13 hours, 36 minutes.

Storage is on the slim side -- 16GB -- which you expect for a low-cost phone. Luckily, a microSD slot supports an additional 128GB. Another perk: The Moto G4 Play comes with two years of free storage on Google Photos. Between photos and videos, it's easy to use that 16GB up pretty fast. I would definitely recommend getting a microSD card.

So what's it missing? A fingerprint sensor and color customization through the Moto Maker website. While the US and Australian models are missing NFC, the UK model is NFC-enabled. The G4 Play does have a headphone jack, unlike the higher-end Moto Z and Moto Z Force (US-only).

As moviegoers head to theaters to catch the latest summer blockbuster, AMC Theatres says it's offering $5 Tuesdays. Film buffs can watch any movie, in any time slot at any AMC location in the country for five bucks. That means you can head out to see Top Gun: Maverick, Thor: Love and Thunder, Minions: Rise of Gru or Halloween Ends multiple times this year without breaking the bank.

In a press release, AMC said Discount Tuesday will be in effect from July 5 through Oct. 31. Though you can purchase regular tickets for this price, additional charges apply for Imax, 3D and Prime viewing options. What about snacks? Some locations are providing "cameo"-size popcorn with either a 21-ounce Icee or a cameo-size Coca-Cola Freestyle for $5 plus tax. 

Guests who want Discount Tuesday tickets must sign up for one of AMC's Stubs programs, including the free AMC Stubs Insider. In addition to $5 admission, this basic tier gives moviegoers free refills on the purchase of a large popcorn and a birthday gift good for a free popcorn, and it waives online ticketing fees for purchases of four or more tickets. 

You can purchase Discount Tuesday tickets in person at the theater, on AMC's website, or via Fandango or Atom Tickets. If you buy through a third-party such as Fandango, log in to your AMC Stubs account to receive the discount. Outside of $5 Tuesdays, AMC also offers 30% off matinee showtimes before 4 p.m. at select theaters, and students can also receive discounts.

Nvidia Says US Order Restricts Sale of AI Chips to China

Nvidia has been ordered by the US government to restrict sales of two AI acceleration chips to China, disrupting a business the chip designer expects to generate about $400 million in sales this quarter, the company said in a regulatory filing Wednesday.

The order, in the form of new licensing requirements and effective immediately, affects the company's A100 and forthcoming H100 processors, which let AI developers speed up their research and build more-advanced AI models. The order could also interfere with the company's ability to complete development of the H100 "Hopper" processor in a timely manner, Nvidia said in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

The US government said the new licensing requirement will "address the risk that the covered products may be used in, or diverted to, a 'military end use' or 'military end user' in China and Russia," Nvidia said in its filing, adding that it doesn't sell products to customers in Russia.

The order comes amid escalating tensions between the US and China, which claims neighboring Taiwan as its own. China recently concluded a series of war games that included launching ballistic missiles into the waters surrounding Taiwan.

The H100, expected to launch this year, is intended to better help researchers tackle complex challenges like understanding human language and piloting self-driving cars. Nvidia estimates the H100 is six times faster overall than the A100 predecessor the company launched two years ago.

The company said it had expected approximately $400 million in sales to China during the third quarter but indicated that figure may be impacted by customers being unwilling to purchase alternative products. Nvidia's stock was down nearly 6% in after-hours trading.

Apple touts iPhone 13's privacy features, but doesn't address spyware worries

Apple says the iPhone 13 features privacy that's "built in from the beginning." It pointed to on-device processing of voice commands and features to block third-party tracking as evidence of that commitment.

The features will come as part of iOS 15, which rolls out on Monday. That means most iPhone users will benefit from the upgrade, not just those shopping for swanky new smartphones.

For example, the new operating system gives Siri on-device speech recognition. That means, Siri voice requests don't leave your iPhone to be processed remotely. Intelligent tracking prevention feature also blocks trackers from profiling you by using your IP address. Email privacy protection also hides your IP address and prevents senders from learning about your mail activity, the company said. 

The Tuesday rollout of flagship devices, however, skipped over two significant issues that raise questions about Apple's privacy practices. The company didn't mention an urgent update to its operating systems that closed an exploit that has already been used to target activists and journalists. Apple also steered clear of its own plans to spy on users by searching iPhones, Macs, iPads for images of child exploitation.

On Monday, Apple released security updates for its iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Mac computers that close a vulnerability reportedly exploited by invasive spyware built by NSO Group, an Israeli security company. 

The fix stems from research done by The Citizen Lab, a public interest cybersecurity group that found a Saudi activist's phone had been infected with Pegasus, NSO Group's best-known product. According to Citizen Lab, the zero-day, zero-click exploit against iMessage, which it nicknamed ForcedEntry, targets Apple's image rendering library and was effective against the company's iPhones, laptops and Apple Watches. 

Apple says it's doubtful the exploit posed a danger to most users, noting that any attack would have to be highly sophisticated and cost millions of dollars to develop. As a result, a cybercriminal would probably save it for use against a specific person.

Still, Citizen Lab, which is based at the University of Toronto, expressed concern about potential use of the exploit. It determined NSO used the vulnerability to remotely infect devices with its Pegasus spyware, adding the exploit has likely been in use since February. "We urge readers to immediately update all Apple devices," the group said.

Separately, Apple has faced blowback for a now-postponed feature set that's designed to detect if people have child exploitation images or videos stored on their device. The features were initially intended to be included in iOS 15, iPad OS 15, WatchOS 8 and MacOS Monterey.

The feature converts images into unique bits of code, known as hashes. The hashes are then checked against a database of known child exploitation content that's managed by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. If a certain number of matches are found, Apple gets an alert and can then choose to investigate. 

Security experts and digital privacy groups including the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Fight for the Future and Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (STOP), have decried the plan and held protests Monday ahead of the iPhone launch in front of about a dozen Apple stores.

In addition to amounting to corporate surveillance, the groups say the feature would create a backdoor into consumer devices that could be taken advantage of by authoritarian regimes and potentially put lives at risk.

Apple hasn't said when the feature will be released. On Sept. 3, It delayed the rollout to make improvements and address privacy concerns.

Apple's fall launch -- which was virtual again this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic -- tends to be the company's most important of the year. It's when the company announces new iPhones, which represent about half its revenue. Its lineup from 2020, the iPhone 12, offered 5G and the first major design revamp since 2017's iPhone X.
