Apple's iPad and M1 Mac Sales May Tell Us Whether the Chip Shortage Is Finally Ending

Apple's iPad and M1 Mac Sales May Tell Us Whether the Chip Shortage Is Finally Ending

Two years ago, Apple was one of the first companies to warn that the COVID-19 pandemic was impacting global manufacturing. Now the tech giant may offer the first signs that things are improving.

Apple will announce its earnings for its second fiscal quarter after market close Thursday. Usually, Apple executives who discuss the results with analysts on a public conference call like to talk about how popular its products are and how exciting the next ones will be. But over the past year, they've also increasingly warned that they're struggling to build enough iPads and Macs to meet demand, missing out on billions of dollars in potential sales.

Though Apple isn't providing forward-looking guidance during the pandemic, analysts on average expect the company to report $1.43 in profit per share on $93.9 billion in sales for the three months ended in March, according to surveys published by Yahoo Finance. That would amount to a 2% increase in profit per share from the same time a year ago and roughly 4% increase in sales.

Assuming Apple meets or beats those expectations, analysts say it's likely the iPhone and its associated accessories made the biggest difference. And that's even though demand for its Mac computers and iPad tablets has risen to record levels.

"We believe demand for the iPhone 13 held up better than expected through the end of the March quarter," Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty wrote in a note to investors last week. "iPhone data points out of China were notably strong in the face of broader market weakness."

The chip shortage has impacted a lot of companies, ranging from car makers to appliance manufacturers.

Whatever Apple says will likely be seen as a bellwether for the tech industry, which has struggled with supply shortages, particularly as demand for computers, tablets and cameras and other technology jumped amid the pandemic.

The ongoing supply shortages have rippled throughout the global economy, slowing production of everything from cars to medical equipment. The constrained supplies have also pushed prices higher, contributing to inflation.

Apple and other tech companies have vowed to increase production in the US to help offset slowdowns in international shipping and manufacturing, but many of those projects are still years from completion. In the meantime, some supplies of chips have improved.

Analysts will likely be listening for any further signs from Apple on Thursday, particularly as the world struggles war started by Russia invading Ukraine. Lockdowns from another wave of rising COVID infections in China have shuttered ports In Shanghai and others cities, further contributing to shipping delays.

Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi said in a note to investors Monday that consumers appear to be slowing their spending binge that was a hallmark of the pandemic. "With slowing growth, high inflation and geopolitical uncertainty tied to the Russia-Ukraine conflict," he wrote, "consumer sentiment appears to be waning."

There are also signs that the manufacturing slowdowns may still impact financial results for the summer, particularly as Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani noted that factories that make about 20% of iPhones were shut down this month amid rising health concerns. "Revenue growth will likely decelerate," he wrote in typical Wall Street lingo on Monday, adding that sales may drop more than even some analysts may be expecting.

With the arrival of Beats new Fit Pro earbuds, I assumed we'd see some nice discounts on the earlier and less feature-rich Beats Studio Buds, which list for $150, or only $50 less than the new $200 Beats Fit Pro. I predicted we might see their price dip to $100 and sure enough, that's what their price is (and a new low).

The Beats Studio Buds look a lot like the rumored stemless AirPods that people were talking about but never materialized -- as AirPods anyway. Geared toward both iOS and Android users, they're missing a few key features on the Apple side of things (there's no H1 or W1 chip), but they're small, lightweight earbuds that are comfortable to wear and offer good sound. They fit most ears securely, including mine -- I run with them without a problem -- but others may find a better fit with the Beats Fit Pro and their integrated wing tips.

Note that using code BYZPPJADUODB during checkout will score you a $10 Amazon credit in addition to the upfront discount.

When do Amazon Cyber Monday deals end?

Amazon's Cyber Monday deals are mostly an extension of the company's Black Friday deals, which have been live for almost a week or longer. Amazon continues to push new daily deals at midnight PT, so be sure to keep checking back for what's new and to make sure you aren't missing out on any great deals. But don't delay: While a handful of Amazon Cyber Monday deals may stay on for a few hours, or even days, most of the best prices will end at the end of the day on Nov. 29.

Will Amazon have the PS5 or Xbox Series X for Cyber Monday?

Honestly, it's unknown at this point. Amazon could hold another restock event at any point during the weekend. As it stands now, we anticipate that Walmart will have some online availability on Cyber Monday, but nothing else is confirmed or rumored at this point.

CDC director says her COVID comment was actually highlighting vaccine effectiveness

For the most up-to-date news and information about the coronavirus pandemic, visit the WHO and CDC websites.

Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, debunked false claims stemming from a recent interview, saying Tuesday that a remark she made was taken out of context. The interview comment in question, made Friday during a segment of Good Morning America, was actually about the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines -- which differs from what conspiracy theorists took from an edited version of Walensky's remarks.

In the GMA video clip shared on social media, the CDC director can be heard saying, "The overwhelming number of deaths, over 75%, occurred in people who had at least four comorbidities," meaning they also had other conditions. Conspiracy theorists used the edited clip to affirm their belief that the only people dying from COVID are those with other conditions.

But Walensky was referring to a large study the CDC published last week that wasn't focused on COVID overall but looked at adults who'd been vaccinated against the coronavirus. The results showed that COVID vaccines are highly effective in preventing hospitalization and death, with only a very small percentage of those in the study dying. The issue of other conditions comes into play because most of that small percentage of vaccinated people who did die from breakthrough infections had at least four comorbidities.

"The study was a cohort of 1.2 million people who were vaccinated, and 36 people passed [away], demonstrating the remarkable effectiveness of our vaccines," Walenksy said during a hearing Tuesday before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee.

The aired clip of Good Morning America has been removed, and a new clip has taken its place with the added context about the study. On the show's YouTube page, the video ends with a message saying, "This video clip has been updated to include an extended version of a GMA interview with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky. A shorter version edited for time was broadcast on Friday, January 7."

2023 GMC Canyon Teased Before Aug. 11 Reveal

When it comes to pickup trucks, GM loves some twinning. The Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickups both recently entered new generations, sharing some impressive improvements between the two of 'em. Last week, we got our first look at Chevy's new Colorado midsize pickup, so it's no surprise that GMC's version is not far behind.

GMC on Tuesday teased its next-generation Canyon. The automaker showed off the passenger side of the midsize pickup's front end -- in AT4X trim, specifically, which is GMC's most off-road-friendly trim to date that also appears on the Sierra. In the teaser, GMC noted that the Canyon is taller and wider than before, with a factory lift meant to improve off-road capability out of the box.

GMC also told us when to expect to see this truck in full. The automaker will pull back the veil on its latest pickup on Aug. 11 at 11:00 a.m. ET. Even if there isn't a livestream for it, we expect to have full details on this truck ready for your perusal at that time.

Since the GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado are fraternal twins, we have a good idea of what to expect. When the 2023 Colorado launched, it picked up some handsome new aesthetics that look far more modern than its predecessor. Every Colorado will use a 2.7-liter turbocharged I4, with outputs of either 237 or 310 horsepower, depending on trim. In its most capable form, it enables a 7,700-pound tow rating.

GMC also sent out an animated GIF of the Canyon in camouflage, even though you just saw what it looks like above this.

'Manifest' Season 4 on Netflix Gets Premiere Date, Teaser Trailer

The fourth and final season of supernatural disaster series Manifest is hitting Netflix on Nov. 4, the streaming service revealed Sunday. The season will be separated into two parts of 10 episodes each.

The release date was announced on Aug. 28, a nod to flight number 828.

A teaser trailer was posted to Manifest's Instagram account, showing the plane hitting turbulence and subsequently landing as the passengers are told they've been gone for five and a half years.

"Fasten your seatbelts. We will soon begin our final descent," the caption says. "Manifest S4 Part 1 lands on Netflix November 4th."

We get to see Ben Stone (Josh Dallas), Michaela Stone (Melissa Roxburgh), Robert Vance (Daryl Edwards) and Zeke Landon (Matt Long) in the teaser, as well as glimpses of Olive Stone (Luna Blaise) and Dr. Saanvi Bahl (Parveen Kaur).

Manifest, which originally aired on NBC, was canceled after three seasons before being picked up and renewed by Netflix after it topped the viewing charts on the streaming platform. The show follows passengers on Flight 828 whose plane arrives at its destination more than five years after taking off. The passengers begin experiencing "callings," or visions and premonitions they use to prevent disasters and save others.

Season 4 is set two years after the previous events at the end of the third season, and follows the murder of Ben's wife Grace and his search for kidnapped daughter Olive. The other passengers search for a way to make it past their death date.

Jared Vasquez (J.R. Ramirez) and Angelina Meyer (Holly Taylor) are also slated to return in season 4, with a new actor set to portray Cal Stone (Ty Doran).

Biden Bans Oil and Gas Imports From Russia

US President Joe Biden announced Tuesday a ban on all imports of oil and natural gas from Russia. It's the administration's latest move against Russia following that country's invasion of Ukraine .

"Americans have rallied to support the Ukrainian people and made it clear we will not be part of subsidizing Putin's war," Biden said during remarks at the White House, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin. "This is a step we're taking to inflict further pain on Putin, but there will be a cost as well here in the United States."

The president will sign an executive order that bans imports of Russian oil, liquefied natural gas and coal. Russia is one of the world's largest producers and exporters of crude, but accounts for only about 8% of US imports.

Until now, Russian oil and gas had largely been spared from US and European sanctions. Biden said European allies are also working on strategies to reduce dependence on Russian energy, but he acknowledged they may not be in the position to join the US ban. Russia provides roughly 30% of the European Union's crude oil supply and almost 40% of its gasoline.

The UK will reportedly ban all imports of oil from Russia, phased in over the coming months. The UK ban won't apply to Russian gas, according to Bloomberg. The European Commission on Tuesday outlined a plan to reduce Europe's reliance on fossil fuels from Russia "well before" 2030.

The price of oil has spiked since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, leading to higher costs at the gas pump. Biden said the ban on Russian energy will make prices go higher, but he noted that the administration is taking steps to address the increase, including releasing 60 million barrels of oil from joint reserves along with partners.

Biden also warned oil and gas companies not to exploit the situation with "excessive price increases." The administration stressed that federal policies aren't limiting the production of oil and gas and said major energy companies have the "resources and incentives they need" to increase production in the US, according to the White House.

Russia invaded Ukraine  on Feb. 24, a move that Biden called a "brutal attack." The US, EU and UK have imposed economic sanctions on Russia, including ones aimed directly at Putin. More than 2 million refugees have fled Ukraine amid the war, according to a United Nations official.

Biden said the US has already provided more than $1 billion in security assistance to Ukraine as well as humanitarian support for people in the country and those who've fled. Biden urged Congress to pass a $12 billion assistance package to continue support and aid.

Avast Free Security - Free download and software reviews

Avast Free Antivirus for Mac is Avast's answer to concerns about how to browse safely. The application is packaged with a brand-new, easy-to-understand graphical user interface, with access to all features available at single click.

The application's onscreen tools are well-organized, and its live graphics enhance the feeling of safety -- you can see that the antivirus software doesn't sleep and is always working to protect you from any viruses circulating on the Web. Avast's free software provides three shields to protect your computer: a file system shield, an e-mail shield, and a Web shield. With all three representing a door to your computer, Avast does a great job of watching these entrances.

However, this comes at a cost, and we don't mean money: as soon as you launch the app, you'll notice a slight drop in your computer's performance, which is due to Avast being at work scanning your entire computer for infected files. Secondly, it affects your browser's performance, as it also scans the pages you attempt to navigate to for viruses through the extensions it installs in Safari, Firefox, and Chrome browsers. We did find its notification feature handy, as it informs the user about its actions, so you'll always know what the software is up to.

Overall, Avast Antivirus for Mac is a nice addition to your Mac toolbox. It's free and very easy to use.
