NVIDIA's new GPU is better than the Titan X and $500 cheaper

NVIDIA's GTX 1080 is no longer the king of the GPU mountain. That honour is now the company's newest graphics card, the GTX 1080 Ti.

Announced at a GDC press conference on Wednesday in San Francisco, the $700 1080 Ti is 35 percent more powerful than the GTX 1080, says NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang.

It comes with 11GB of GDDR5X memory, and with 11GB of frame buffering it is designed for 4K gaming. In fact, Huang reassured his audience that they could play Watch Dogs 2 in 5K -- that's 5,120×2,880 -- using the GPU.

Most impressively, the company claims the 1080 Ti is more powerful than the Titan X, a $1,200 GPU developed for AI and deep learning. Like the Titan X, the 1080 Ti use 3,584 of NVIDIA's CUDA cores. The GTX 1080, by comparison, has 8GB of memory and 2,560 CUDA cores.

Huang also announced at the conference that the 1080 was getting a price drop down to $500.

The GTX 1080 Ti will be available from March 10 for $700. No international pricing has been announced, but that converts to AU$915 and £565.

'Morbius' Isn't Streaming Now, but It Will Be on Netflix (Eventually)

Morbius, a spinoff from the Spider-Man universe of live-action films, is hitting theaters Friday. Meanwhile, the COVID-19 pandemic, with its profound disruptions to new movies, ushered an unprecedented wave of theatrical films to streaming services at the same time they hit cinemas. HBO Max, in particular, became synonymous with the practice last year, but Disney Plus, Paramount Plus, Peacock and Netflix all have track records with same-day releases, too.

Confusion around this same-day streaming practice has led to some misguided hope among moviegoers when any new movie hits theaters. Without new standards for when movies move to streaming, lots of people get confused whenever a film hits the big screen whether it'll be streaming too.

But Morbius is being released exclusively in theaters Friday, without a subscription streaming option.

Where will Morbius stream?

Morbius is going to stream first on Netflix. The movie is distributed by Sony, which struck a deal with Netflix last year for all its 2022 theatrical releases to stream on Netflix before they're available on any other service or TV network.

Will it be 'free' to stream?

Since Netflix requires a paid subscription, nothing is available on Netflix free. But Netflix never charges any additional fees to watch anything in its library, and Morbius will be part of the standard catalog like everything else.

When is Morbius' release date for streaming?

Neither Netflix nor Sony has confirmed a streaming release date for Morbius yet. But Netflix's deal with Sony is what's known as a "pay-one window." Traditionally, movies hit this stage of their release cycle roughly six to nine months after theatrical release.

So if Sony and Netflix stick with this kind of timeline for Morbius, the movie would start streaming on Netflix sometime between October and the end of this year.

For what it's worth, Sony's last movie similar to Morbius -- Spider-Man: No Way Home -- is supposed to start streaming within six months, according to Hollywood trade publication Deadline. But whether Morbius is going to follow that timeline too is complicated (see below).

Will Morbius and Spider-Man: No Way Home both be on Netflix?

No, the latest Spider-Man movie, No Way Home, isn't going to be on Netflix at all.

Both movies are distributed by Sony, and they exist in the same narrative universe. But Netflix's deal to stream these movies starts with films theatrically released in 2022 and after. No Way Home was released in late 2021, and Sony has an agreement in place for its 2021 movies to go to the premium cable network Starz first, not Netflix.

On Starz, No Way Home will be available to watch on its traditional channels as well as on its streaming app. If it is released to stream within the six months that Deadline reported, No Way Home would arrive on Starz before early August.

Save Up to $250 on Apple's Powerful 14-Inch MacBook Pro

Save Up to $250 on Apple's Powerful 14-Inch MacBook Pro

The 14-inch MacBook Pro (the latest 2021 model) got a glowing review from CNET's Dan Ackerman, and for good reason. It's sleek, versatile and packed with powerful hardware. It does have one major downside though: It's pretty pricey, with base models starting at $1,999. But right now, Amazon has a rare opportunity to grab one at less than list price. You can save $200 on all configurations of the 2021 Pro, and $250 on the 1TB model in silver. There isn't a clear-cut expiration listed for this offer, so it could really switch off at any time. Based on our experience with sales on Apple devices, we'd definitely recommend acting sooner rather than later if you're hoping to grab one at a discount.

Equipped with Apple's cutting-edge M1 Pro processor and 16GB of RAM, the MacBook Pro is designed to handle even high-strain tasks like 8K video editing and 3D rendering with ease. The base 512GB model features an eight-core CPU and a 14-core GPU, while the 1TB model bumps that up to a 10-core CPU and 16-core GPU. This offer is on the 14-inch model, which features a stunning Liquid Retina XDR display and up to 1,000 nits of sustained brightness. The 16-inch model made our list of the best laptops of 2022, but the 14-inch is very similar.

This 2021 model is also equipped with an HDMI port and SD card reader, which have been absent on recent generations and make it exceptionally versatile. Dan loved that the MagSafe power connector made a comeback, too. You can watch his full video review below.

How to Train Yourself to Become a Back Sleeper (and its Benefits)

How to Train Yourself to Become a Back Sleeper (and its Benefits)

Unless you're some kind of Incredibles Elastigirl, there are three primary sleeping positions: side, stomach and back -- although, some can be a combination of these. In 2019, a study that involved over 3,700 volunteers concluded that only 7% of people sleep predominantly on their back, a stark contrast to the 54% of people who favor sleeping on their side.

However, what if back-sleeping had real, tangible evidence that it's better for you? Would you give it a try? It turns out there are many benefits to back-sleeping as it has a long list of benefits, ranging from reducing physical pain to preventing wrinkles and pimples.

Don't worry, it's never too late to train yourself to become a back sleeper, but it will take effort to accomplish. Becoming a back sleeper may not happen overnight, but it's worth a shot if you want to reap its benefits. Find out below how sleeping on your back can improve your health and the steps you can do to make the switch.

The benefits of back sleeping

CNET Sleep Tips logo

Back sleeping has been praised as the ultimate sleeper position, and for good reason. It can do wonders for your body, face and overall health.

There are a few exceptions to this. The first is pregnant women (usually after 20 weeks) because back sleeping can cause more pressure to their bellies. The second is people who snore or suffer from sleep apnea, as back sleeping can cause the tongue to obstruct your airway and cause breathing difficulties. Otherwise, training yourself to sleep on your back is worth considering.

  • Prevent back and neck pain: The key to preventing back pain while you sleep is ensuring your spine, neck and head are all in proper alignment -- one straight line, if you will. Back sleeping on a firm mattress can promote a neutral alignment, relieving pressure on your back and spine. A 2017 study revealed that sleeping on your back with your arms resting on the side or your chest is the best position to relieve pain.
  • Prevent acid reflux and clear up your sinuses: Sleeping with your head elevated above your heart helps prevent the build up of mucus in your sinuses, and relieves symptoms for those who experience acid reflux by preventing the exposure of acid to the esophagus.
  • Reduce tension headaches: Headaches that originate from the neck or cervical spine can be confused with migraine headaches, and often happen because of compressed nerves in the neck. Back sleeping helps relieve pressure on your neck, similar to how back sleeping prevents back pain.
  • Prevent wrinkles and blemishes: Sleeping on your stomach with your face down can have an undesired effect on your appearance. The compression and pinching of your face against your pillow can lead to wrinkles and fine lines, and the same thing goes for your neck. Additionally, your pillowcase is a hub for bacteria and sebum which can lead to breakouts.
  • Prevent puffiness in your face: When you sleep face-down on your pillow, fluid can collect in the tissues of your face resulting in swelling, puffiness and under-eye bags. Sleeping face-up on your back with your head elevated ensures the fluid is properly drained out.

How to train yourself to sleep on your back

Pillow placement is key

Use pillows to your advantage to help train yourself. You should have a pillow with medium loft (height) to keep your head propped up, a pillow under your knees and a pillow under your lower back. This helps support the natural curvature of your body and relieve pressure.

You can also create a pillow fortress to surround your whole body. It can prevent you from changing into a new position, and make you feel so cozy that you don't even feel the need to roll around.

Properly elevate your head

To elaborate on step one, your pillow should keep your neck in a slight "C" curve to help reduce pressure on your neck and head. If you're staring straight up at the ceiling, your pillow isn't tall enough. If you're fully facing the wall in front of you, your pillow is too tall. The perfect back-sleeping pillow will be somewhere in between.

Make sure your bed is firm enough

Back sleeping on a soft mattress is a recipe for back pain. A soft mattress lacks the support to keep your spine and neck in a neutral alignment, allowing your back to sag into the bed. Instead, try a firm mattress or firm mattress topper to make your bed feel more accommodating.

Try an adjustable bed frame

An adjustable bed frame that allows you to move the head and foot positions up and down can keep you in a comfortable sleeping position, while also discouraging you to switch to your side or stomach.

By raising your head above your heart and slightly raising your feet, you go into a "zero gravity" mode, and it relieves pressure from all parts of your body -- like you're floating in space (hence the name). The positioning also prevents you from moving into an uncomfortable position on your side or stomach.

Consider the starfish position

If you're a single sleeper, your bed is your oyster and you can do as you wish without bothering a co-sleeper. In that case, lay with your legs and arms spread out and stretched each way like a starfish. You're able to evenly disperse your weight to prevent the build-up of pressure, and people who have tried it swear by it.

Mind your late-night meals

As tasty as pizza and hamburgers are, try to refrain from eating heavily fatty foods too close to bedtime. If you eat dinner less than 2 hours before you plan to go to bed, you may feel an uncomfortable pressure on your belly when you try to sleep face-up.

How to clean an air purifier

I took a look at user guides for Honeywell, Winix and Levoit air purifiers to come up with this cleaning overview. Here are the basic steps to follow to clean your air purifier:

  1. Unplug your air purifier

This is always the first step. Make sure your air purifier is unplugged before you begin.

2. Check the filters

Most air purifiers come with two different filters: a prefilter and a HEPA filter. Some even have a third filter. Each manufacturer's recommendations will vary in terms of cleaning the filters. Honeywell, Winix and Levoit all say not to wash or otherwise clean their HEPA filters, but instead to replace them regularly.

Levoit suggests replacing its HEPA filter every six to eight months, while both Honeywell and Winix say their units last up to one year.

Levoit's prefilter should be cleaned every two to four weeks with a gentle brush or vacuum. You can wash the Winix prefilter every few weeks; just make sure it's completely dry before you put it back. And Honeywell says not to wash it's prefilter at all, but instead to replace it every three months.

3. Wipe off the air purifier

All of the manufacturers I checked suggested wiping off the air purifier with a dry cloth about once every few months. Do not use water or any cleaning solvent to clean off your air purifier.

4. Store the filters when not in use

If the air purifier isn't going to be used for a month or more, Honeywell says it's best to remove and store its filters in tightly sealed bags.

One final note

Keep in mind that the specific cleaning requirements might vary slightly depending on the brand and model of air purifier you purchase. Make sure to check the printed or online user's guide that comes with your air purifier to confirm its maintenance needs. Regardless, your air purifier will need some sort of upkeep and it will likely follow the information detailed above (or very close).

Elon Musk asked in Twitter poll if he should sell Tesla stock to pay taxes. People said 'Yes'

Tesla CEO Elon Musk should sell 10% of his stock in the electric-car maker he founded in order to pay taxes, according to the results of a poll he posted to Twitter on Saturday. Nearly 58% of the more than 3.5 million people who took part in the poll voted for the stock sale by the time the poll closed on Sunday.

Musk said Saturday he would honor the results of the poll, which came amid continuing discussions of a "billionaire's tax." Amid the attention garnered by the online poll over the weekend, Musk changed this Twitter name to "Lorde Edge," which itself became a trending topic on the social network on Monday.

"Much is made lately of unrealized gains being a means of tax avoidance, so I propose selling 10% of my Tesla stock," Musk tweeted, "Do you support this?" Musk, one of the world's richest people, included a Yes or No poll in the tweet, saying, "I will abide by the results of this poll, whichever way it goes."

"Note, I do not take a cash salary or bonus from anywhere," Musk added. "I only have stock, thus the only way for me to pay taxes personally is to sell stock."

Musk's remarks come as Democrats have been wrangling over a proposal to fund a large social-safety-net bill by taxing billionaires' unrealized capital gains, or the increase in value of unsold assets they hold, like stocks, bonds and real estate.

In June, investigative site ProPublica got hold of a cache of IRS documents and reported that Musk and other moguls, by structuring their pay to avoid income, built their wealth into the high billions while paying almost nothing in federal taxes. The activity wasn't against the law, ProPublica said, but the tax records reveal how the uber-wealthy minimize taxes, sometimes by taking out loans using their stock holdings as collateral. By comparison, wage earners live primarily off their paychecks, which are taxed as income.

Sen. Ron Wyden, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, commented on Musk's poll on Saturday, saying "whether or not the world's wealthiest man pays any taxes at all shouldn't depend on the results of a Twitter poll." He added that it's "time for the Billionaires Income Tax."

Musk responded in a tweet on Sunday with a vulgar comment about Wyden's profile picture.

It's unclear when or if Musk will sell the 10% of his Tesla stock. Shares in the electric car company fell roughly 5% in premarket trading on Monday.

Musk doesn't accept direct messages through his Twitter account. Tesla didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Facebook Messenger adds more features, continues focus on encryption

Facebook Messenger adds more features, continues focus on encryption

Facebook has been moving forward with plans to integrate messaging on Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp, but those efforts are still far from over.

Facebook Messenger users can already reach people through Instagram direct message and vice versa without downloading a new app. The company also wants to make cross-app communication between Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp, an encrypted messaging app, possible. That work, though, involves encrypting messages on Facebook Messenger by default so that only the participants of a conversation can view a chat.

"We always were very clear that it's a long journey because there is a lot of things that we need to work through," Stan Chudnovsky, who oversees Facebook Messenger, said in a video chat with reporters on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the company continues to add more features to Messenger. On Wednesday, Facebook Messenger said it introduced 10 new features to celebrate the app turning 10 years old. Some of the new tools include poll games in which users ask their friends who is more likely to do a certain activity in a chat, a feature to share Facebook contacts in a chat and a way to get words to trigger an emoji. Messenger also added other features to celebrate birthdays such as a soundmoji, new stickers and effects like virtual balloons that pop up when you give friends a cash gift.

From encryption to Facebook's metaverse ambitions, Chudnovsky also provided more insight into how Messenger is thinking about its future.

Voice and video calling: Facebook is experimenting with bringing voice and video calls, features available in Messenger, back to the main social network. Facebook started asking users to download Messenger as a standalone app in 2014. Chudnovsky said the test is about making these calls more "convenient" for the user. If a user is conversing publicly on Facebook, for example, having to jump to a messaging app could disrupt their talk.

Encryption: Facebook Messenger already offers users the option to encrypt their text messages, voice and video calls but adding this protection by default comes with challenges, Chudnovsky said. Since Messenger includes features that aren't available in encrypted messaging threads, encrypting the app by default too quickly would result in the loss of certain capabilities. That means the company needs to rebuild features in an end-to-end encrypted environment as new tools also get added. The company is trying to address safety concerns that encrypted messaging could be used by criminals as well. Chudnovsky didn't say when it plans to make Messenger encrypted by default but noted it's trying to do so "responsibly."

The Metaverse: Facebook is building a virtual environment known as the metaverse where people can interact with people in digital spaces. Messenger's technology, Chudnovsky said, is being used to power other Facebook apps including the virtual reality workrooms it's testing on the Oculus Quest 2. If Facebook's vision as a metaverse company comes to fruition, Chudnovsky still expects messaging to grow because people will need to communicate with others outside of the virtual space. Instead, he envisions people in these virtual spaces will consume messages in the metaverse. "Someone needs to enable that and that's going to be us," he said.
