OnePlus 10 Pro Review: A Great Android Phone With Some Problems

OnePlus 10 Pro Review: A Great Android Phone With Some Problems

The OnePlus 10 Pro is without doubt the best phone the company has ever made. From its powerful processor and its beautiful display, to its solid camera and smart design, it ticks pretty much every box you should expect from a high-end flagship Android phone in 2022. And at $899 (£799, roughly AU$1,400), the phone is competitively priced against high-end rivals like the Galaxy S22 Ultra ($1,200) and iPhone 13 Pro ($999).

It offers similar performance, 5G and a smooth, approachable interface. However, it's let down slightly by mediocre low-light camera performance, a lack of an official IP water resistance rating on most versions of the phone and a few omissions when it comes to the US models.

Like

  • Classy design
  • Powerful performance
  • All-day battery life
  • Vibrant screen

Don't Like

  • Slightly disappointing camera
  • Waterproof rating restricted to T-Mobile-exclusive models
  • No 80-watt fast charging in the US

But even with those relatively minor issues, the OnePlus 10 Pro offers a lot for the money and is well worth considering if you're looking for a high-performance Android phone that leaves a little cash left in your pocket.

Classy design, glorious display, problematic waterproofing

I love the look of the 10 Pro. It's got a frosted glass back, with an attractive camera unit and a lovely green color that I think is smarter and more stylish than the shiny fingerprint-prone backs of the previous OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro. It has a look that I think stands out well against the likes of the iPhone or S22 Ultra.

It should put up with some abuse too, as the back is made from toughened Gorilla Glass 5 and there's even more hardcore Gorilla Glass Victus covering the front. There's no official waterproofing though, unless you buy the T-Mobile exclusive version in the US which does have an IP68 rating. The rest of you -- including everyone outside of the US -- will simply have to keep it extra safe from spilled drinks.

OnePlus has partnered with T-Mobile for the phone's US launch, with the carrier selling the phone as well as allowing full 5G support for customers who bring an unlocked model. The phone won't support 5G when used on AT&T, but you can bring it to the carrier to use just on its 4G network. The OnePlus 10 Pro will also work on Verizon's 5G network, but you'll have to buy it unlocked before setting it up with the carrier.

Waterproofing being a T-Mobile exclusive is a shame, as it's pretty standard on many of its rivals, including the iPhone 13 Pro, S22 Ultra and Pixel 6 Pro. The previous OnePlus 9 Pro was also IP68-rated, so it feels especially disappointing that this useful safety feature has been restricted solely as part of an exclusivity agreement with one US carrier.

The 6.7-inch display has a 3,216x1,440-pixel maximum resolution, making even tiny little details look pin sharp. It's bright, too, with punchy colors that do justice to colorful games like Candy Crush and Alto's Odyssey or vibrant TV shows like Squid Game or even Bluey.

The screen has a 120Hz refresh rate which makes it seem buttery smooth when scrolling around, but it can automatically switch to lower rates in less demanding tasks in order to conserve battery. You'll also find a fingerprint scanner invisibly hidden beneath the display which works quickly and accurately most of the time.

Three great cameras that need to try harder

The back of the phone is home to three cameras; a 48-megapixel main camera, a 50-megapixel ultrawide camera and an 8-megapixel telephoto camera offering 3.3x optical zoom.

I've spent some time already using the main camera in an earlier test and I'm pleased to report that results are generally excellent, with accurate colors, a great balance of exposure and plenty of detail. There's a new raw file option too -- called Raw Plus -- hidden in the Pro camera mode which uses computational techniques including HDR blending but still outputs a DNG raw file for easier editing. It's similar to what Apple does with its ProRaw mode and it works well here if you're the sort of person who likes editing your images later on.

It has a portrait mode which does a good job of separating your subject from the blurred background, along with neat features like a panoramic-style mode called XPAN (harking back to old Hasselblad cameras) for wide and narrow images and a motion blur mode for creating blurred water effects or car headlights streaking through a night-time street scene.

The super wide lens is vibrant and sharp too, although there's sometimes a noticeable color shift between the normal and wide modes, while the optical zoom lens gives enough zoom to help you find more interesting compositions in your surroundings. It too is reasonably sharp, although I've found the iPhone's zoom produces clearer results. Of course if zoom is a priority for you, no phone comes close to the whopping 10x optical zoom offered by the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

When the sun goes down, the night mode does a decent job of creating bright and sharp images from the main lens but results still aren't quite up there with the iPhone. Especially not when you switch to the zoom lens, which struggled at night, resulting in a noisy, blurry shot that was world's apart from the iPhone's effort in the same scene.

OnePlus cameras have always been decent, but they've typically not done enough to compete with the best phones around. And while the 10 Pro packs the best camera OnePlus has ever put into a phone, it lets itself down a little with both its night mode and zoom skills. Its main camera is excellent for most daytime scenes, however, and it'll serve you well if photography is important but maybe not the sole reason you're buying a phone.

Supercharged processor, powerful battery

Powering the phone is Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, along with 12GB of RAM on my UK review model, although US versions will have a maximum of 8GB. This combo put in some great scores in our various benchmark tests. It's certainly up there among its rivals and there's no doubt that it's capable of handling any of the everyday tasks you'd want to throw at it.

Note:

Longer bars equals better performance

It breezed through things like raw photo editing and video streaming and demanding games like Asphalt 9 or PUBG played beautifully smoothly even with the settings cranked to the max. OnePlus has apparently done a variety of tweaks to ensure that gaming performance is optimized for smooth frame rates along with reducing the latency between you tapping the screen and an action taking place. Mobile gamers are well catered for here.

oneplus-10-pro-cnet-review-2

Gaming on the OnePlus 10 Pro is fantastic.

Andrew Lanxon/CNET

Interestingly there's an option in the settings to expand the available RAM up to a whopping 19GB (as reviewed) by using some of the regular storage. However, I didn't notice any real improvement in performance when doing this (and no change in benchmark results). Whether you'll find this genuinely useful when using lots of apps at once remains to be seen.

The Android 12-based software, running the latest version of Oxygen OS, is neat and free of general clutter making it a good option for both experienced Android users or those taking their first steps into the Android world.

Providing the juice is a capacious 5,000-mAh battery, which thanks to the various performance improvements will comfortably allow for a full day of mixed use. During my testing, I found that after an hour of YouTube streaming with the screen on max brightness it had dropped from full to only 99%, dropping to 94% after a second hour which is better than I'd found from both the Pixel 6 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro.

oneplus-10-pro-cnet-review-7

The OnePlus 10 Pro can charge as fast as 80W internationally, and a still fast 65W in the US.

Andrew Lanxon/CNET

It supports fast charging too; my UK review model being able to suck down the juice at 80W, although in the US its peak fast charging is done at 65W which OnePlus says will take it from empty to full in a little over 30 minutes. That's still incredibly fast and allows you to give it a quick boost if needed before you head out for the evening, safe in the knowledge you'll have enough battery to call a cab home after a few beers.

A Pixel 6 Pro Rival

The OnePlus 10 Pro may have the S22 Ultra and the iPhone 13 Pro in its sights, but the closest competitor the phone has may be the Pixel 6 Pro that's also at $899 in the US. The OnePlus 10 Pro makes use of the newest Qualcomm chip, while the 6 Pro is powered by Google's in-house Tensor chip. Both provide fast speeds and show off the best of Android 12.

Yet due to features that are exclusive to T-Mobile, especially water resistance, many people might be better off with the Pixel simply for its wider compatibility. Internationally, however, the OnePlus 10 Pro stands on slightly more even ground and can surpass thanks to its ludicrously fast wired charging speeds and, for the UK, the 10 Pro is cheaper at £799 than the 6 Pro at £849.

WhatsApp adds Joinable calls, a way to hop on group calls after they started

WhatsApp is adding a new feature with the aim of making it easier for people to join group calls with family and friends. Joinable calls allow you to hop on a call that's already started, or leave and rejoin the call as long as it's still going.

The chat app is also adding an information screen to your calls so you can see who's already on the call and who still needs to join. If you want to hold off on joining a call with your friends and family, you can hit "ignore" and join the call later from WhatsApp's calls tab.

The feature will start rolling out Monday, WhatsApp said.

In June, WhatsApp said it'll add multidevice support, letting you link four devices to one account.

No opening crawl for 'Rogue One'? 'Huge mistake,' says creator

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" has many of the elements that have become so familiar to Star Wars fans since the first film in 1977. Gritty rebels and evil Darth Vader, lovable droids and the terrifying (if expensive) Death Star.

But it's also lacking an iconic staple of the previous seven films. It begins without the iconic text crawl, a brief introduction that crawls through space at the beginning of each of the other movies.

There's no memorable explainer slowly wandering off into space following the words, "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...." There's not even a snooze-worthy history such as "The taxation of trade routes to outlying star systems is in dispute" from Episode I -- "The Phantom Menace."

Dan Perri, the title designer who created the crawl for the original film, told The Hollywood Reporter that he feels the lack of a crawl was the wrong decision.

"Frankly, it is a huge mistake, because the image is so iconic and it's so important to tens of millions, hundreds of millions of fans," Perri told THR. " I couldn't imagine it starting without that. It's foolish."

"Rogue One" director Gareth Edwards addressed the crawl issue with Entertainment Tonight back in July, five months before the movie's Dec. 16 opening. "The idea is this film is supposed to be different than the saga films," Edwards said then.

The lack of an opening crawl hasn't stopped the film from selling out across the nation. It took in an estimated $155 million on its opening weekend, making it the second largest opening weekend for December in box office history.

Perri also told THR that getting series creator George Lucas to accept the original crawl was a tedious process, and he would often wait for hours only to have the director reject his latest crawl attempt. And Perri himself never saw "Rogue One" and its lack of a crawl -- he says he hasn't seen any of the films since the original.

2023 Porsche Taycan Range, Software Upgrade Coming to All Model Years via Update

2023 Porsche Taycan Range, Software Upgrade Coming to All Model Years via Update

Porsche on Tuesday announced all of the hardware tweaks and software updates coming to its Taycan electric performance sedans and sport wagons for the 2023 model year. The new software promises faster charging, infotainment improvements and even a modest range bump. However, owners who got on the Taycan train early shouldn't feel left out, because the bigger news here is that these new software revisions are backwards compatible with previous model year variants via a dealer-installed update.

2023 Taycan hardware updates

The updates on the hardware side are fairly minimal, mostly applying to optional accessories and equipment. All 2023 Taycan models outfitted with the panoramic glass roof now feature the automaker's Variable Light Control electrochromatic shade and will also feature preparation to accommodate Porsche's Roof Transport System of rails, crossbars and cargo boxes. Owners can also have their EV delivered with a preinstalled wiring harness, ready for installation of the Porsche Dashcam. The front and rear camera system is available through Porsche's Tequipment range of official dealer-sourced accessories.

Meanwhile, the 2023 Taycan's 19-inch single-color Aero wheel will be replaced with a new polished and painted Taycan S Aero 19-inch wheel design.

The Taycan's thermal management and powertrain control system updates promise more range and more consistent charging speeds.

Porsche

Powertrain and thermal management improvements

New powertrain management software allows for more liberal disengagement of the front motor in the Taycan's Normal and Range drive modes, which helps to reduce parasitic drag while cruising. Porsche tells us that it expects this tweak to contribute to an approximately 50-kilometer boost (about 31 miles) to the European WLTP range estimate for dual-motor configurations. The automaker does not yet have an estimate as to how this will translate to our EPA numbers here in the US.

The updated Taycan will also be able to precondition its battery pack more quickly and to a higher temperature in preparation for a charging session. This will allow for an optimized charging curve when plugging in with the battery at a high state of charge and, hopefully, more consistently delivering the Taycan's claim of a 5% to 80% DC fast charge in under 23 minutes.

Quality of life updates include retaining the user-selected Recuperation setting switching between drive modes and energy flow information added to the all-wheel drive indicator in the digital instrument cluster.

The PCM infotainment suite gets a visual overhaul with more colorful graphics and a revised HUD.

PCM and Porsche Connect features

Speaking of the dashboard, Porsche's Porsche Communication Management infotainment system is getting a visual overhaul with new colorful tiles on the home screen, tweaks all over the user interface and an updated design for the head-up display.

Taycan drivers will also now be able to filter based on power output when searching for a charging station using the onboard navigation. This should make it easier to find fast 270-kilowatt stations while avoiding being stuck at relatively slow, but more common 50-kW plugs.

Android phone users can now leave their USB cable at home thanks to PCM's new wireless Android Auto connectivity. (The infotainment already supported wireless Apple CarPlay and continues to support wired versions of both technologies as well.) There's also new Spotify integration for people who'd rather use the Taycan's onboard data connection for streaming.

2023 Taycans (and older models that have received the upgrade) will be over-the-air updatable, making future fixes and updates more seamless.

Porsche

Backwards compatible, over-the-air updates

You can't download new wheels, but Porsche is making the 2023 PCM revisions and powertrain software updates available to 2020, 2021 and 2022 model year Taycan variants. Owners will receive a notification -- likely via mail -- from Porsche when the software is available and will be able to return to their dealership or service center to receive the update.

Expect the upgrade to take up to a day, which seems like a long time, but that accounts for the oldest 2020 model year models getting a bigger, more comprehensive update than, say, a newer 2022 Taycan. Plus, we're talking about software controlling the core operation of the $88,150 Taycan's powertrain, so maybe it's better to take their time and get it right.

With the new software in place, all model years will become capable of over-the-air updates -- thanks to optimizations to the software's interface with the car's various control units -- which should make future service visits for new features and fixes a far less common occurrence.

Surface Pro 8 vs. Surface Pro 7: Microsoft's latest 2-in-1 is bigger, better than before

Microsoft announced its latest premier two-in-one, the Surface Pro 8, at its Sept. 22 event and it's now available to buy starting at $1,100. The Surface Pro hadn't received a full update since October 2019, when the Pro 7 was introduced. That seems like eons ago -- and even then it didn't change much from the Surface Pro 6

Earlier this year, Microsoft did introduce the Surface Pro 7 Plus for Business. However, it has the same design as the Pro 7 but with 11th-gen Intel processors and Windows 10 Pro. There's also the 13-inch Surface Pro X that uses a custom Arm-based chipset from Microsoft instead of an Intel processor. With Windows 11 now available, though, this is a good time to update it inside and out, and that's what we got.

While the Surface Pro 7 is no longer in the lineup, you'll still be able to buy one -- likely at a discount -- until retailers sell through their stock. Microsoft is keeping the Surface Pro 7 Plus around and will have a consumer version of it with Windows 11 Home for those who want a "classic Surface Pro."

A larger, faster display

The Surface Pro 8 is essentially a mashup of the Pro 7 Plus and Pro X; it's the same-ish body of the 13-inch Pro X with the processors of the Pro 7 Plus. The Pro 8 is thicker and heavier than the Pro X but not by much. Since the Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus are built around a 12.3-inch display, the 13-inch Pro 8 is larger than that model, too.

Although the Surface Pro 8 display is the same size and resolution as the Pro X, the Surface Pro 8's screen has a refresh rate that goes up to 120Hz, which should make writing and drawing on the display a smoother experience (and gaming, too). When the extra speed isn't needed, it can drop to 60Hz to save battery life.

This makes it easier than ever to connect external displays directly to the Surface Pro, as well as giving you high-speed data transfers and more expansion options with a dock or hub. And even though Microsoft still uses its proprietary Surface Connector for the power adapter, you can charge the Pro 8 via the USB-C ports.

Of course, with the addition of the USB-C ports, something had to go: There is no more good ol' USB-A port on the Surface Pro 8. Microsoft also did away with the microSD card slot for expanding storage. The two-in-one does offer a removable SSD option, though it is a short M.2 2230 drive. Still, it's an option down the road if you need more physical storage.

New keyboard, new pen; neither are included

As you might expect, the increased screen size of the Surface Pro 8 means the keyboard cover from the Pro 7 won't fit. If you're upgrading to the Pro 8, you'll need a new keyboard cover, too. Microsoft did develop a new one for the Pro 8 that has a spot at the top to hold and charge the new Surface Slim Pen 2

Like past Surface Pro models, the keyboard cover isn't included with the Surface Pro 8. Neither is the pen. They are not cheap. The keyboard alone is $180, the pen is $130 and bundled together they're $280. At least the kickstand is built into the body of the Pro 8 so you don't have to buy a separate cover for that function.

A lot more time to work, create and play

While the 11th-gen Intel Core processors will certainly boost performance over the Surface Pro 7's 10th-gen chips, it'll also give you much better battery life. True, it helps that the Surface Pro 8 also has a larger battery pack. But, according to Microsoft's numbers, the Pro 7 Plus, using the same size battery as the regular Pro 7, gets up to 15 hours of battery life compared to the Pro 7's 10.5 hours. The Pro 8 will run for up to 16 hours.

The Surface Pro 8 has a larger, faster display, new processors to improve performance and extend battery life, Thunderbolt 4 for greater versatility and a new keyboard and pen. It is, however, still pricey, and the keyboard, which is pretty much a must-have, isn't included. Neither is its active pen.
