Google, Apple, Twitter Reveal Return to Office Policies

Several major tech companies, including Apple, Google and Twitter, are preparing for employees to return to offices after roughly two years of remote work amid the COVID-19 pandemic. 

During the company's annual shareholder meeting on Friday, Apple CEO Tim Cook said corporate employees will return to in-person work starting in April. People will be required to work from the office at least one day a week starting April 11 and at least three days a week by May 23, reported Bloomberg. 

"For many of you, I know that returning to the office represents a long-awaited milestone and a positive sign that we can engage more fully with the colleagues who play such an important role in our lives," Cook reportedly said in a memo sent Friday. "For others, it may also be an unsettling change."

Google will require most employees to come into the office three days a week as of April 4. Google employees who aren't ready to return to the office on April 4 can apply for a remote work extension, or apply to switch locations, fully remote work or "work from anywhere" weeks.

Google last month said it would no longer mandate COVID-19 vaccines as a condition of employment for US workers, and would not require vaccinated workers to wear masks, get tested or socially distance while working in most offices.

Unvaccinated employees who are approved to enter offices will need to follow testing and mask-wearing regulations. Unvaccinated workers will otherwise not be able to access Google offices.

On the other side of the coin, Twitter has told its employees that when it reopens offices March 15, it will be up to workers where they work from.

"Wherever you feel most productive and creative is where you will work, and that includes working from home full time forever," Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal said in a letter to employees. "Office every day? That works too. Some days in office, some days from home? Of course."

Microsoft offices reopened for in-person work on Feb. 28. In January, Meta delayed its plans until March 28 due to the omicron variant causing COVID cases to surge. Amazon also postponed while dropping its mask mandate for fully vaccinated workers a month ago, and Apple indefinitely delayed its deadline for returning to the office.

Though COVID cases are now dropping, there have been more than 950,000 deaths from COVID-19 in the US, according to numbers from John Hopkins University. COVID-19 vaccines have been proven safe and effective against severe disease, hospitalization and death.

Toaster ovens aren't the most thrilling of appliances. In terms of excitement, they're right up there with microwaves. But what if a toaster oven was powerful enough to serve as an air fryer, too? That's the claim Black & Decker makes about its Large Capacity Air Fry Toaster Oven. If true, it'll be the company's first such combo appliance.

Air fryers work by using a robust convection heating system to generate enough heat and swirling air currents to crisp and caramelize food. They also cook with much less oil, or sometimes none at all. Air fryers tend to roast items faster and more evenly than ordinary toaster ovens too. Air frying is a tall order for any kitchen appliance. Even full-size ovens can stumble while providing convection heat. If Black & Decker's countertop toaster can pull it off, it'll be a nifty trick. 

Other abilities in the toaster oven's wheelhouse include modes to bake, broil, toast and keep food warm. The large-capacity toaster oven comes with a 9 by 13-inch interior pan. Black & Decker says the appliance provides sufficient space for a 12-inch pizza or as many as eight slices of toast. There's room for three separate racks at different positions, too.

Compact, air-frying toaster ovens aren't unprecedented. The $199 Cuisinart Air Fry debuted a few years back. Breville has a newer appliance, the $400 Smart Oven Air. It too boasts supercharged convection heating. In fact, Breville says the cooker gets hot enough to roast meat and speeds up cook times by 30 percent.

Black & Decker hasn't yet set a specific price for the Air Fry Toaster Oven. Neither has the appliance maker given a date for when it'll hit stores. Even so, Black & Decker expects the product to run for less than $100. The appliance should be on exhibit at the International Housewares 2018 show in Chicago next month. I certainly plan to check it out first-hand and report back.

It's pumpkin season, and to mark the occasion, Uber Eats is rolling out a feature that lets people in select US regions get seasonal items, including pumpkins and carving kits, delivered to their door. It's part of Uber's first official holiday shop, the company said Thursday.

Starting Oct. 1, customers in Los Angeles, San Diego and West Palm Beach, Florida, will be able to order Halloween-themed items through the Uber Eats app. After Halloween, the shop will offer delivery for Christmas items, and then rotate seasonally while expanding to more markets, Uber said. 

To search for and order items, type an emoji into the search bar on the Uber Eats app, like a ghost or pumpkin. The holiday shop will appear in available cities. 

Uber Pass and Eats Pass holders won't have to pay a delivery fee on eligible orders $15 and up.

"Our goal is to make Uber a destination that customers can rely on to get whatever they need when they need it, so creating a Holiday Shop that offers festive items for all types of celebrations was a no brainer," Raj Beri, Uber's global head of grocery and new verticals, said in a statement. 

Brandon Helfer, owner of Jack O' Lanterns Pumpkin Patch, which partnered with Uber for the holiday shop, said: "Over the last few years, we've seen our customer base become more interested in having our products delivered rather than coming into our brick-and-mortar locations. With this partnership, we will be able to fulfill more delivery requests and get our customers into the holiday spirit without them having to leave their home or office."

Windows 10 has been around for five years, but it's only now that Microsoft'ssupport for Windows 7 is dead and gone that the question arises: How long will Windows 10 last before Microsoft replaces it? Will we see a Windows 11 at some point? 

Luckily, we know the answer. Microsoft has a long-established Fixed Lifecycle Policy for many of its products, which begins when a product is released and ends when it's no longer supported. Knowing these dates can help you decide when you want to update, upgrade to a new device, or make other changes to your software or machine. 

Windows support lasts 10 years, but...

For each version of its OS, Microsoft offers a minimum of 10 years of support (at least five years of Mainstream Support, followed by five years of Extended Support). Both types include security and program updates, self-help online topics and extra help you can pay for. 

Windows 10 was released in July 2015, and extended support is slated to end in 2025. Major feature updates are released twice a year, typically in March and in September, and Microsoft recommends installing each update as it is available. 

The situation is a bit more complicated than that, however. When Windows 10 first came out, a Microsoft employee called it "the last version of Windows." This doesn't mean that Microsoft will be getting rid of the OS, but that Windows will operate more as a service, with continuous updates instead of a brand new version. But as hardware ages, some devices might not be able to receive updates anymore.

"A device might not be able to receive updates if the device hardware is incompatible, lacking current drivers, or otherwise outside of the Original Equipment Manufacturers' ("OEM") support period. Not all features in an update will work on all devices," according to Microsoft's Lifecycle FAQ.

The latest Windows 10 version to come out was the November 2019 update, which added some new productivity features, like the ability to create events directly from the Calendar flyout on the Taskbar, without having to open the Calendar app.

Some people have hesitated to make the Windows 10 upgrade, as several bugs were reported in earlier versions. But Microsoft has slowed down its update schedule, giving the company more time to test, pause updates, and disclose problems. 

Your experience updating to Windows 10 should be fairly smooth at this point, and will let you take advantage of Microsoft support. This is particularly important for the security of your device -- without Microsoft's security upgrades and patches, your computer is at greater risk of malware taking hold through a loophole. 

We recommend upgrading to Windows 10 as soon as possible. However, if you're still running Windows 7 and don't want to upgrade, these 7 Windows 7 security tips will help protect your laptop until you make the switch. 

To start your upgrade, you could buy and download Windows 10 through Microsoft's website for $139. But you can try this free method, too. While Microsoft technically ended its free Windows 10 upgrade program in July 2016, CNET has confirmed as of January that the free update is still available for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 users.

Snapchat has helped over 1 million people register to vote through its app this year, a spokesperson said Thursday. The popular app, known for its disappearing messages and face filters, estimates 56% of the people it helped register this year are first-time voters and nearly 65% are between 18 and 24.

For the 2020 election, Snapchat parent company Snap said it's created tools to help people register to vote, learn about voting options and make a plan to cast their ballot.

"Historically, most voters registered through Snapchat actually vote," said a Snap spokesperson, adding that 57% of the more than 450,000 people Snap helped register for the 2018 US mid-term elections actually cast a ballot.

Throughout October, Snap said, it will help users follow through on voting with its new tool, Before You Vote, which will help people decide whether they should vote by mail and find their polling location. The company will also provide a voting checklist in user profiles, as well as let people know about deadlines for voting early.

Qualcomm's new chip will boost gaming on phones from Motorola, Xiaomi and others

Qualcomm just launched a new high-end Snapdragon 888 smartphone processor, but it's already got another chipset available to power slightly cheaper phones. The company on Tuesday unveiled its Snapdragon 870, which will be used by companies like Motorola and Xiaomi in their upcoming devices.

The Snapdragon 888, unveiled in December, powers Samsung's new Galaxy S21 lineup and will be in most high-end Android phones hitting the market this year. It's aimed at flagship phones considered to be the best-of-the-best, as well as the priciest. The Snapdragon 870 falls a step below that. 

It's not quite as powerful as the 888, but its CPU and GPU are about 10% better than the Snapdragon 865, Qualcomm's highest-end chipset for Android phones from the previous year. By comparison, the Snapdragon 888 provides a 25% improvement in CPU and a 35% boost in GPU over the Snapdragon 865. The new Snapdragon 870 "is designed to deliver increased performance across the board for geared-up gameplay," Qualcomm said. 

The continued advance of 5G is more critical than ever now that the coronavirus has radically changed our world. People are stuck at home and are maintaining their distance from each other, forcing them to rely on home broadband service -- something 5G could amp up. The next-generation cellular technology, which boasts anywhere from 10 to 100 times the speed of 4G and rapid-fire responsiveness, could improve everything from simple video conferencing to telemedicine and advanced augmented and virtual reality. Gaming is one area that's expected to benefit from 5G's responsiveness and fast speeds. 

Notably, the Snapdragon 870, like the Snapdragon 865 and 865 Plus processor before it, doesn't have an  5G modem that's integrated on the same chipset as the brains of the device. Integrated chips, like the Snapdragon 888, allow for better battery life, lower costs and thinner and lighter designs. In the case of the Snapdragon 870, handset makers will have to buy a separate Qualcomm 5G modem to connect the device to cellular networks.

Motorola, iQOO, OnePlus, Oppo and Xiaomi all plan to introduce phones with the processor starting in the first quarter of the year. They'll likely be priced below $800. 

"Benefiting from the powerful performance of the new Snapdragon 870 5G Mobile Platform, we will continue to build high-end flagship device and bring more surprises to global consumers regarding 5G, camera, AI and more," Lei Zhang, vice president of Mi Smartphone and general manager of hardware R&D at Xiaomi, said in a statement.

Xiaomi last week came under fire from the Trump administration for being what the US calls a "Communist Chinese military" company. The designation isn't as severe as what Huawei has faced -- American companies like Qualcomm aren't allowed to sell components to Huawei -- but it forces American investors to sell their stakes in the Chinese handset maker. Huawei's troubles with the US had opened an opportunity for Xiaomi to gain more buyers, both inside China and out. In the third quarter of 2020, Xiaomi surpassed Apple to became the world's third biggest handset vendor. But the new designation creates an overhang on Xiaomi and raises worries it soon could face a US export ban like Huawei.

"If Xiaomi is included in the US Entity List (ie, export ban), it would significantly impact its ability to procure components ... to make smartphones," Jefferies analyst Edison Lee noted. He estimated that Xiaomi gets about 70% of its smartphone processors from Qualcomm.

The Honda Civic has been on sale in the US since 1973 and throughout its 10 generations, it has become America's best-selling car by retail sales. True, the Toyota Camry sells more units per year than the Civic, but that's because Toyota sells to fleets -- Honda doesn't. The Civic entered its current generation for the 2016 model year and for 2019, it receives a lightly freshened exterior, minor interior enhancements, more standard driver-assistance technologies and a new Sport trim.

Powertrain and specs

Honda offers a choice of two engines and two transmissions with the Civic. Lower trims get a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that can channel its 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque through either a six-speed manual transmission or a CVT. Upper trims get a 1.5-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder. Paired exclusively with a CVT, that engine makes 174 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. The power figures of both of those engines are greater than average for the compact sedan segment.

At 25 miles per gallon city and 36 mpg highway, base Civics with the six-speed manual and the 2.0-liter engine get slightly below-average fuel economy. That same engine with the CVT boosts fuel economy as high as 30/38 mpg, which starts getting competitive with the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta's 30/40 mpg. The most efficient Civics with the 1.5-liter engine and the CVT can achieve 32/42 mpg, which is near the top of the class.

Interior

The Honda Civic offers plenty of space for up to five passengers. With 15.1 cubic feet of trunk space, the Civic's cargo capacity is also near the top of the class, matching the Nissan Sentra's 15.1 cubic feet and clobbering the Toyota Corolla's 13 cubic feet. The Chevrolet Cruze and Volkswagen Jetta, for comparison's sake, offer 14.8 and 14.1 cubic feet. All Civic sedans are equipped with a 60/40 split folding rear seat, except for the base LX version, which features a one-piece folding rear seat.

Technology

A 7-inch TFT instrument cluster display is now standard across the board. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto paired with a reworked 7-inch touchscreen (now with a volume knob) are offered on all but the base trim.

All Civics now come standard with the Honda Sensing suite of driver assistance features, which bundles full-speed-range adaptive cruise control, collision-mitigation braking, lane-keep assist and automatic high-beams. Standard driver-assistance systems like this make the Civic more competitive with the Toyota Corolla, which also offers a standard suite of adaptive driver safety systems. Most other cars in this class make you pay extra for features like that.

Options and pricing

The 2019 Honda Civic is offered in five trims with base prices ranging from $19,450 to $27,300 plus $895 for destination. Other than the standard Honda Sensing, the LX model is rather basic with features such as 16-inch steel wheels, power windows, power door locks, auto climate control and a four-speaker sound system with Bluetooth streaming.

The new $21,150 Sport trim adds 18-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, keyless access, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, push-button start, an eight-speaker audio system and the 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Stepping up to the $23,400 EX gets you 17-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof, heated front seats with an eight-way power driver's seat, dual-zone auto climate control plus HD and satellite radio. The $24,600 EX-L adds leather seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a HomeLink transceiver.

Finally the $27,300 Touring model moves back up to 18-inch wheels and features LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, chrome door handles, a navigation system, four-way power passenger seat, heated rear seats and a 10-speaker audio system.
