Netflix Co-CEO Says It's Seeking Ads Partnerships, Not a Roku Takeover
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said the streaming giant is holding talks with multiple advertising companies about partnerships that would help it introduce a cheaper membership with ads, according to reports.
"We're talking to all of them right now," Sarandos said Thursday, according to Reuters, when he was asked on a panel about the advertising companies it's pursuing for potential partnerships. Sarandos' panel was part of the Cannes Lions advertising summit in France, one of the world's biggest annual events for the ad industry.
The comments, and Netflix's attendance at Cannes Lions for the first time, further cemented Netflix's public commitment to introducing advertising to its service. In April, when Netflix reported its first subscriber loss in a decade, co-CEO Reed Hastings reversed years of dismissing any interest in advertising by revealing the company was "looking at" a cheaper, ad-supported tier for Netflix.
But Netflix, which doesn't have an ad-sales force, would need to hire people and create its own, acquire an entity to absorb an ad-sales team or technology, or forge a partnership with an existing ad company.
Thursday, Sarandos' comments indicated the company is pursuing the latter.
Sarandos also batted down the idea that Netflix is seeking to take over Roku, a company that's built a growing business around its own streaming service people can watch free with advertising, called The Roku Channel. "I don't know where that came from," Sarandos said of the speculation that Netflix might purchase Roku, according to Deadline. But he left the door open to ownership of its own advertising business down the road. "If it becomes so important [that] we want to have control over it, we might," he said, according to Deadline.
The drop in viewers has buffeted Hollywood's confidence in streaming as its engine into television's future. Netflix's years of unflagging growth pushed nearly all of Hollywood's major media companies to pour billions of dollars into their own streaming operations. These so-called streaming wars brought about a wave of new services, including Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Peacock and Paramount Plus, among others, a trend that's complicated how many services you must use -- and pay for -- to watch your favorite shows and movies online.
With the intensifying competition to hold your attention and your subscription dollars, most Netflix rivals have leaned into a two-tier model, which offers a cheaper membership to watch with advertising as well as a more expensive subscription without ads. Netflix blazed the trail for streaming TV, but its ad-free-only strategy has fallen behind the standards of the industry, as competitors launched giving viewers like you more options.

Hertz and Shelby American are taking the concept of "driving it like a rental" to a whole new level, teaming up to offer the insane 900-plus-horsepower 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500-H for rent at select Hertz airport locations. The three-year partnership between the brands also includes a run of 2022 Mustang Shelby GT-H fastbacks and convertibles with more civilized specs.
The GT500-H may be "the most powerful rental car that Shelby has ever built," but it's not the first Hertz x Shelby collaboration. The performance brand and car rental giant first teamed up to offer the original GT350-H "Rent-A-Racer" in 1966. A second Shelby GT iteration was offered in 2006 and renters were able to get behind the wheel of the Shelby GT-H in 2016. (Shelby also recently partnered with Sixt to offer the Shelby GT-S Mustang rental car in 2019.)
The 900-horsepower rental car
The GT500-H's makes over 900-horsepower thanks to a 5.2-liter V8 engine that's force fed air via a 3.8-liter Whipple supercharger, a cold air intake and a high volume intercooler. A Shelby by Borla cat-back exhaust makes sure the powerplant can exhale efficiently and sound good doing it. Personally, I reckon 900 ponies is a bit much to hand over to just anyone who rocks up to the rental counter, but nobody asked me.
The GT500-H features a dry carbon fiber hood that saves around 30 pounds versus the stock bonnet.
Hertz, Shelby American
Beefed up performance half-shafts make sure the power makes its way to the road via performance tires wrapped around gloss black 20-inch forged monoblock aluminum wheels. The fitment is staggered with 11-inch wide wheels up front and 11.5-inch wide rear drive wheels.
Nineteen GT500-H examples will get a coat of Shadow Black paint and six will be sprayed in Oxford White to honor Shelby American's 60th anniversary. Beneath the paint is a lightweight dry carbon fiber performance hood -- around 30-pounds lighter than the stock bonnet -- with functional heat extraction vents. All of Hertz's GT500-Hs will feature gold Le Mans-style stripes, a gold finish on the supercharger and a Carol Shelby Mustang numbered engine plate. Inside, renters will be treated to leather seats, gold Hertz-themed details and a numbered dash plate.
The GT-H returns
More widely available and a touch more tame, the Mustang Shelby GT-H fastback and convertible is powered by Ford's 5.0-liter V8. Hertz hasn't released detailed horsepower and torque numbers, but performance upgrades include a Shelby by Borla cat-back exhaust and staggered 20-inch wheels -- 9 inches wide up front and 10 inches at the rear -- shod with all-weather Michelin tires.
Less insane, but still potent, the Mustang Shelby GT-H rental car returns in coupe and convertible configurations.

Visually, the GT-H stands apart with its deeply vented hood, unique front grille, rear spoiler and tail light panel. Convertible models also feature a chunky roll bar. More colors are available to GT-H renters -- red, white, gray or black -- all featuring those Hertz-themed gold Le Mans stripes. Interior upgrades include leather seats, 60th Anniversary badges and a Carol Shelby Mustang numbered plate.
The 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500-H will be available to rent at Hertz airport rental locations in Fort Myers, Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Las Vegas and Phoenix. Hertz hasn't announced how much it'll cost to rent one, but you'll probably want to seriously consider getting the insurance if you do. The GT-H coupe and convertible will also be offered in those locations as well as Atlanta, Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco.

Like with art, it's important to consider the size and positioning of light fixtures when redesigning your home. Sometimes swapping out the smallest accents can have a big impact. Upgrading your cabinet hardware, changing outlet switch covers, adding interesting door knobs, and even replacing crown molding can instantly transform the look and feel of your house.
While you can find small accents like hardware and knobs for affordable prices, if you have dozens of pieces to update, the price can add up. Repainting your hardware might be a more affordable option in this case -- you can even use metallic spray paints to make cheap, plastic knobs look more expensive. With all the new camera features coming to the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, it's no surprise the company included major changes to the Photos app in iOS 13 and iPadOS 13, which will work for many older devices, too. The Photos app has a new look and editing tools that are designed to make your photos -- and, for the first time, videos -- look better than ever.
Beyond new edit tools, the Photos app now takes a more interactive approach to curate your past photos and videos, and improved search tools give the app a more personal touch.
The update to the Photos app joins a new swipe keyboard, a ton of hidden features, and the ability to block all unknown callers.
After using the new Photos app, one thing is clear: Apple wants you to view Photos as an app you should visit daily to discover old pictures and videos you'd all but forgotten about. Oh, and there are some fancy new video editing tools you should probably take advantage of.
Let's take a look at what's new in the Photos app in iOS 13.

New Photos tab features help organize your pics
The Photos app has a new look overall, and it's most apparent in the new Photos tab. When viewing the Photos tab, you'll find four options at the bottom of the screen: Years, Months, Days, All Photos. You can move between the various options to narrow down a specific time frame for viewing your pics.
Each option has its own way of showing photos from that specific time. For example, selecting Years will show you photos taken as close to today's date, only in 2018, 2017 and so on. It's kind of like Timehop, but built into your iPhone or iPad.
Here's another example of the Photos app creating special views for you. If you use the People album to identify friends and family members and have entered their birthday in their contact information card, the Photos tab will highlight the person on their birthday with various photos of that person.

Photo editing tools you should care about
Apple updated the tools you use to edit a photo. The new look and layout of the tools will take some adjustments on your part, but shouldn't be too jarring.
When viewing a photo you want to edit, the Edit button is still in the top-right corner. Selecting Edit opens the default edit tool where you can choose auto adjustments, or scroll through various settings such as brightness, brilliance, exposure, and so on.
To adjust any of the options, you can move the line of bars just below each button to the left or right.
The filters tool still works the same as it did in iOS 12, only now you can adjust its intensity. Once you select a filter, drag the line of bars to the left to decrease the impact of the filter on your photo.
The crop tool now does more than just allow you to crop a photo. You can now also change a picture's perspective, which means you can adjust the viewing angle of the photo. This gives you total control over how the picture looks, and it a lot like a popular Instagram tool.
The biggest change to the Photos app in iOS 13 is the addition of video editing tools.

All-new video editing tools
Perhaps the most notable addition to Photos in iOS 13 is video editing. I'm not talking just about trimming a clip and saving it, but the ability to adjust everything from brightness and exposure to applying a filter or cropping and perspective.
With true video editing tools now included in the Photos app, you're no longer forced to find a more complicated (and oftentimes expensive) video editing tool in the app store or on your laptop. Instead, you can quickly and easily edit a video in this built-in app you're likely already familiar with.
The tools for video editing work the same way as the photo editing tools do, only the first screen you'll see is the option to trim the clip. The trim tool works as it always has -- drag the yellow ends of the video to set the start and end time of the clip you want to save. This is great for snipping off false starts and awkward endings.
With your video trimmed, you can then adjust and fine-tune the overall look of your clip and save it back to the Photos album.
What's more, any edits you make to a video are nondestructive. This means if you add a filter and crop the video, only to decide a few days later that you're not happy with the changes, you can go back and undo it all. The original video will remain intact.

The third beta of Android 13 has launched, Google announced Wednesday.
Beta 3's arrival means the official release of Android 13 is drawing closer. Another beta is planned for July. After that, the final release will likely happen this fall alongside the release of the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro phones.
The upcoming OS version has reached the platform stability milestone, Google said, meaning it's finalized enough that app developers can roll out compatibility updates without having to worry about any app-facing changes to the platform.
If you own a Google Pixel, you have the option of downloading this beta through the Android Beta Program, but be aware that betas are typically buggy. If you do decide to download it, be sure to back up your device first.
Google showed off Android 13's new features at its I/O conference in May. The update will implement end-to-end encrypted group chats, improvements to Google Wallet and bolstered security features.

There have been plenty of videos of GoPro cameras surviving in crazy circumstances, but none of them have a surprise ending quite like this one. Mia Munselle found a camera in the pen where she keeps three pigs. The footage she recovered from it explains how it got there.
The camera fell from an airplane carrying skydivers last summer. Munselle told Crave she didn't discover it until recently due to the simple fact that she doesn't spend much time walking around in the pen. She confirms the camera is a GoPro Hero, either a 1 or a 2.
The camera managed to land from its dizzying descent with the lens pointing upward. One of Munselle's curious pigs took over from there, giving it a thorough check to see if it was edible.
This may sound like a cleverly orchestrated publicity stunt on the part of GoPro, but it's actually a real event that occurred simply by accident.
Tandem master skydiver Clif Jordan with NorCal Skydiving confirms the camera fell from a plane. It had been attached to a jumper's helmet, but it likely wasn't clipped all the way into the mount. When the skydiver stuck his head out the door, the camera fell to its piggy doom.
The video has it all: high-speed, high-flying acrobatics, an improbable landing, and great footage of the interior of a pig's mouth. No wonder it's racking up the views on YouTube.

Kia is undergoing a renaissance of sorts, heralded by a new logo, streamlined alphanumeric model names, a focus on electrification and crazier designs than ever before. The first production model to wear the redesigned emblem and fresh design language is the new K8 sedan, which replaces the Cadenza in the lineup. Sadly, the K8 won't come to the US, but that doesn't mean we can't still ogle over it.
Making its debut Tuesday, the K8 is about an inch longer than the outgoing Cadenza, which was called the K7 in other countries, but no other dimensions were announced. Kia is positioning the K8 both as more of a premium offering and more of a sports sedan than the Cadenza, which is apparently reinforced by the name change.
The K8 continues Kia's streak of striking designs.

The first thing you notice about the K8 isn't the new Kia logo, but the massive "tiger nose" grille that sits below it. The grille is frameless so it seems like an integrated part of the bumper, and it features an intricate diamond pattern that's echoed by the LED turn signals beneath the headlights. It's extremely distinctive, and not really like any other Kia currently on sale. The new grille also seems like it could easily be translated onto electric cars by closing off some of the diamond elements, which we're sure is by design.
Like the K5, the K8 has a fastback profile but a traditional sedan trunk, with Kia proclaiming that traditional sedans are being reinterpreted as fastback passenger cars. The K8's sides are sleekly surfaced and mostly unadorned, and Kia says the main character line is inspired by "yachts sailing across calm waters." There's a strange finlike trim element in the rear windows, and a chrome strip in the lower doors kicks up to meet a strip in the quarter panel flowing off the taillights.
Get ready to see these taillights on future Kias.

Our favorite part of the K8 is the rear end, which features a fabulous ducktail-esque spoiler integrated with the trunk lid above a thin, horizontal taillight strip. The LED taillights split off into two spears to form a Y shape and feature jewellike patterns, and there's a pair of rectangular chrome exhaust tips. The angular look is really successful, and you can expect to see similar taillight shapes on Kia's upcoming crossover EV.
Even better than the K8's interesting exterior design is its absolutely spectacular interior. Kia describes it as a "detail-oriented lounge," which seems apt, as it looks extremely high-end and is reminiscent of super-modern furniture and audio equipment. A curved display links together two 12-inch screens, one for the gauge cluster and the other for infotainment, a feature that is likely to spread across the Kia lineup. The climate controls are found on a touch-sensitive panel that can cycle through different modes, but there are physical knobs for the temperature. There's no volume knob, however. The steering wheel is also a new design for Kia, and the gear selector is a rotary knob that seems to be nabbed directly from Genesis.
You can't tell me this doesn't look awesome.

The screen sits atop a massive piece of wood trim spanning the dashboard that has a diamond pattern etched into it, and curving behind the display and onto the door panels is a metal panel that houses air vents and speakers for the Meridian audio system (a Kia first). More wood is found on the doors and the center console, and there's loads of diamond-stitched Napa leather throughout the interior. In addition to ambient lighting in the door panels, the K8 has what Kia calls Star Cloud lighting, glittery "interactive" lights dotted into the diamond patterns on the dashboard wood and the metal door trim.
No information on powertrains or chassis improvements have been released. The K8 will launch in South Korea and other markets later this year, and the brand is set to trickle out more info before then.
