Surprise! Netflix Adds a Bonus 'Sandman' Episode

Surprise! Netflix Adds a Bonus 'Sandman' Episode

If you couldn't get enough of Netflix's mesmeric fantasy series The Sandman, then here's some good news: Netflix just added a star-studded bonus episode with two new standalone stories.

The 10-episode series began streaming on Aug. 3, but you can now find an 11th episode following season 1's finale that adapts a pair of stories from the original comics. The first half of the episode is a short animated tale entitled A Dream Of A Thousand Cats, while the second full length story is a live action tale entitled Calliope.

The cartoon cat caper is voiced by Sanda Oh, James McAvoy, David Tennant, Georgia Tennant, Michael Sheen, Nonso Anozie, Joe Lycett, Diane Morgan and even comics writer Neil Gaiman himself. The second story stars Melissanthi Mahut as ancient muse Calliope, alongside Doctor Who stars Arthur Darvill, Nina Wadia and Derek Jacobi. In both stories, Tom Sturridge plays Morpheus, AKA Dream, the Sandman himself.

Although the new episode is tacked on the end of the series, the Calliope episode begins in 2018 and continues to 2022, so unfolds during the course of the series between Dream's escape from captivity and his withdrawal into the Dreaming at the close of season 1.

T-Fal FZ7002 Actifry review: Even superb fries don't make this a good deal

T-Fal FZ7002 Actifry review: Even superb fries don't make this a good deal

Stir, fry on automatic

As air fryers go, the Actifry's size is pretty average, which means it's quite large. The appliance won't take up as much counter space as a toaster oven, but it has a bigger footprint than most coffee makers and four-slice toasters. Thankfully its profile is low enough to slide easily under kitchen cabinets.

Physically the fryer consists of two sections. A main circular unit that's squat and bulbous. Inside, under the flip-open lid, is its cooking pan and mixing paddle. The pan has a handle that flips down and out of the way while you cook.

At the center of the pan is the cone-shaped paddle. The device clamps down onto the pan and locks into place, holding them together. In this position, the hollow part of the paddle's cone rests on a rotating spindle. The spindle enters through a hole below the pan. You can pull the pan out of the fryer simply by flipping its handle up and lifting upwards.

The Actifry's second section is a flat control panel. It sits on a rounded bump that extends a few inches from the back of the fryer. The panel is refreshingly simple, with just two buttons: an "on/off switch" and a "timer setting button." In between them is a small LCD screen. Aside from two fat buttons on the front to open the lid, these are the Actifry's only controls.

A latch inside the lid detaches it from the Actifry's hinge. The lid, pan and paddle are all dishwasher safe. Compared to other big air fryers like the $300 Philips Airfryer XXL, I found the Actifry's parts a cinch to hand wash as well.

So simple it's scary

This Actifry model has the most elemental controls I've seen on an air fryer. Other air fryers such as the Philips Airfryer Avance, Krupps Fry Delight, Black and Decker Purify and DeLonghi Multifry all let you control two things -- power and temperature. Not so with the Actifry. You can turn it on or off. That's about it. The air fryer's internal heat level is out of your hands.

It certainly makes cooking with the Actifry dead simple, at least in theory. First, secure the pan and paddle stirrer in place. Next put your food in, close the lid and start it up. Within a few seconds, the paddle begins to rotate slowly. As with the DeLonghi Multifry, the digital timer and cooking functions aren't connected. So, when the timer counts down to zero the air fryer doesn't not turn off. You have to remember to do that yourself.

The Actifry can air-fry up to 2.2 pounds of frozen french fries at a time.

Brian Bennett/CNET

Performance and taste

The Actifry may not be a monster of an air fryer like the Philips Airfryer XXL (1.4kg capacity) but it still has lots of room. The fryer's 1kg pan can accommodate up to 2.2-pound batches of fries, meatballs, nuggets and other frozen items.

My 23.3-ounce test sample of frozen crinkle-cut french fries (no oil) took 30 minutes to cook in the Actifry. Its roughly the quantity that fits on a standard baking sheet. That's longer than the Philips Airfryer XXL (23 minutes), Philips Avance (18 minutes), Simple Chef (24 minutes), Philips Via (23 minutes) and Krups Fry Delight (27 minutes).

The Actifry made the best tasting frozen French fries we've had from an air fryer.

Brian Bennett/CNET

That said the T-Fal's fries were consistently the best we've tasted from any air fryer, coming out superbly crispy, with a creamy, light inner texture. This was true even with fries of different sizes. Hand-cut fries were just as tasty when cooked in the Actifry. They were also uniformly golden brown and delicious. For best results I had to pour 1 tablespoon of oil directly into the Actifry's pan. Tossing the fries with oil in a bowl first left too much oil behind.

Chicken wings the Actifry cooked were fine but their skin wasn't crispy enough.

Brian Bennett/CNET

Chicken wings, while fine, are not the Actifry's forte. The skin of wings I cooked (without oil) was not that crisp. Rendered fat from the chicken collected in pan. The fryer slowly dredged the wings through this grease thanks to the mixing paddle. The resulting skin was oily, not crackly or crisp.

Tragedy struck when I tried to whip up some risotto in the Actifry. My test recipe calls for 2 cups of chicken broth mixed in with mushrooms, rice, onions and other aromatics. Somehow the mixing paddle wasn't connected properly to the pan. In turn the paddle didn't form a watertight seal.

Risotto the Actifry managed to create was bad, but edible.

Brian Bennett/CNET

Cooking liquid then leaked from the pan into the hot plate below. The leak continued to spill out of the fryer and onto the counter. A second risotto attempt was less eventful but the results were disappointing. The rice was cooked unevenly and the texture was mushy. Still, the risotto was edible. That wasn't the case when I tried to make the dish in the DeLonghi MultiFry.

Great fries are not enough

There's no question that the $200 T-Fal Actifry FZ7002 is an interesting air fryer option. It cooks french fries, both frozen and fresh, extremely well. For diehard pommes frites fans, that's reason enough to splurge on this pricey machine. For ordinary shoppers though, giving up precious counter space for a mainly one-trick appliance is a nonstarter.

If the Actifry cost less, then perhaps it would be an option. Or if the fryer could handle sauces and other wet ingredients without the risk of a huge mess. Then the Actifry would be worth it to many people. As it stands though, you're better off getting your fried food fix from the more affordable $70 Simple Chef Air Fryer.

The Absolute Best Anime Shows on Netflix

The Absolute Best Anime Shows on Netflix

Netflix  has a surprisingly definitive library of anime, featuring everything from classics like Cowboy Bebop and Naruto to the latest and greatest shows like Demon Slayer and Attack on Titan.

There's so much to watch. If you're looking for more niche stuff, Netflix also has shows like Beastars and Record of Ragnarok to check out. Get stuck in!

The best anime shows on Netflix

Viz Media

Demon Slayer (2019-)

Shonen's most recent darling, Demon Slayer is a standout hit that breaks with many of the well-worn cliches in action anime. The story follows Tanjiro Kamado, who joins the ranks of the demon slayers following the murder of his family by a demon. Only Nezuko Kamado, Tanjiro's younger sister, survived the onslaught — but she was turned into a demon. Tanjiro travels Taisho-era Japan with Nezuko in search of a cure and joins the Demon Slayer Corps, seeking to confront the original demon, Muzan Kibutsuji, who killed his family.

The animation and action are breathtaking, the characters are compelling and vibrant, the music is stellar and the dialogue is memorable. We couldn't recommend this anime more. Season one is streaming on Netflix, but there's another season out there, if you're craving more.

Viz Media

Naruto (2002-2007)

"Believe it" (as Naruto Uzumaki would say), you can't have a best anime list without this show. This classic, well-loved anime follows Naruto, a young ninja from the Hidden Leaf Village who dreams of becoming the leader of his village. Beware: Naruto is a very long anime. So long that once you get through all nine seasons on Netflix (220 episodes total), which covers Naruto's preteen years, you'll still have another 500 episodes to cover in Naruto: Shippuden, which picks up two and a half years after the show's original run. There are also a handful of Naruto movies available on the streaming service right now. Make sure to skip the filler episodes, unless you're really desperate for something to watch.

Funimation

Attack on Titan (2013-2023)

Attack on Titan is without a doubt one of the most popular anime right now. And for good reason. With spectacular animation, political intrigue, a compelling cast of characters and bigger-than-life battles, this is one show you'll want to check out. Yes, the titans -- the gigantic, humanoid, human-eating monsters that force humanity to live behind towering castle walls -- are unnerving and might freak you out. But that's half the fun, especially when we see our heroes take them down. Netflix only has Attack on Titan's first season in its catalog, but those 25 episodes are enough to get you started.

Sunrise

Cowboy Bebop (1998-1999)

Another anime classic, Cowboy Bebop was originally broadcast in 1998 and, well, it never lost its appeal. The show brilliantly melded a variety of genres – primarily science fiction and Western (think space cowboys) – to create something completely novel and compelling. Set in 2071, the series is about a group of traveling bounty hunters aboard their ship, Bebop. Netflix recently made a live-action version of the show, though it didn't receive the same critical acclaim as the anime.

Viz Media

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (2012-)

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure follows generations of the Joestar family, from the 19th century to modern times, through decades of, you guessed it, bizarre adventures. Each member of the family carries the same name – Jojo – and each is imbued with great superhuman powers. The battles are as psychic and supernatural as the narrative is adventurous. Good thing all five seasons are streaming on Netflix.

VIZ Media

Hunter x Hunter (2011-2014)

Hunter x Hunter remains an unfinished story, having been abruptly paused after season 6. The manga's author, Yoshihiro Togashi, stopped writing, leaving Hunter x Hunter on hiatus. New chapters, Togashi recently announced, are incoming. This anime starts with protagonist Gon Freecss, who leaves home in search of his father, but the show quickly branches out of that simple narrative. The series is beloved for its world-building and emotional investment across its diverse cast of characters.

Viz Media

Death Note (2006)

A gripping game of cat and mouse for the ages, Death Note follows Light Yagami, a genius high schooler who finds a mysterious notebook (the titular "Death Note") that gives its owner the ability to kill anyone whose name is written within it. Hellbent on creating a new world free of crime, Light carries out a massacre, killing off criminals and those Light deems morally unworthy. But the world's greatest detective is on the case. Can Light get away with it?

Yen Press

Kakegurui (2017-2019)

You'll be hooked after the first few episodes of this popular anime, trust us. This show isn't your typical action anime – but that doesn't make it less enthralling. In fact, the opposite is true. Kakegurui is set in an academy where the measure of a student is based on their gambling prowess, whether that's at the roulette table or playing blackjack. It's part psychological thriller, part drama, and the stakes get higher as the show progresses.

Netflix

Castlevania (2017-)

A Netflix original inspired by the classic video games of the same name, Castlevania follows the last member of the disgraced Belmont family, Trevor Belmont. This dark medieval fantasy is full of gore, gothic horror and grotesque monsters. Trevor -- and friends made along the way -- venture out to defeat none other than Dracula himself, whose anger and grief over the unjust death of his love overruns Eastern Europe in the 1400s. You don't want to miss this one.

Viz Media

Record of Ragnarok (2021-)

Ever wanted to see a brawl between a Norse god and an ancient Chinese warrior? Or watch a Greek god duke it out with one of the best swordsmen in Japan's history? Me neither, but now I'm sure glad I have.

Record of Ragnarok's premise is simple: Through 13 one-on-one battles to the death, humanity must prove itself worthy to avoid annihilation by the gods. The first to seven victories wins. This anime is imaginative, entertaining and chock-full of human history, so you'll learn some new stuff along the way. It's also cool to see legends from all corners of the globe coinciding in one mythos. Only the first 12-episode season is out, making this a perfect anime to binge on your next couch session.

Viz Media

One Piece (1999-)

If you thought Naruto was long, think again. One Piece is the longest-running anime to date, spanning more than 1,000 episodes across 23 years of broadcasting. The show follows Monkey D. Luffy and his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates. They're in search of the ultimate treasure known as One Piece. Netflix recently expanded its four-season collection of One Piece to 13 seasons, giving you plenty to sink your teeth into. If you ever hope to catch up, best get to it!

Netflix

Devilman Crybaby (2018)

In a world where demons resurface, Akira Fudo unites with a demon, at the behest of his friend, to become a devilman, in order to wage a brutal war against the demons that now plague the earth.

Devilman Crybaby is based on the manga written by Go Nagai, which was originally adapted as an anime back in the '70s. This newer series moves the time setting from the 1970s to modern times and goes hardcore on mature themes and violent sequences. It's rated TV-MA, so this isn't one for the children.

Devilman Crybaby debuted to great acclaim in 2018, and so far it's just 10 episodes compiled under one season.

Netflix

Beastars (2019-)

Beastars is set in a world of anthropomorphic animals. These characters have jobs and go to school, reminiscent of Disney's Zootopia. But while Beastars and Zootopia both tackle similar themes – predator versus prey, prejudice and discrimination versus compassion and inclusivity – Beastars is definitely the emotionally heavier show. In fact, because of some of the sexual themes and violence in the show, it's best to steer children away from this one. If you're into melodramas that are heavy-handed on philosophizing, this may be the best show for you yet.

Viz Media

One Punch Man (2015-2019)

How would you feel if you were so strong that you could defeat any foe with just one punch? Triumphant? Bored? Lonely? This is the central question One Punch Man grapples with. The show follows hero Saitama, who has trained so hard that all his hair fell out. By the end of his training, he's able to defeat any enemy with one punch. The show is a satire of shonen manga and anime, subverting the common tropes found in those stories. If you're looking for a different spin on the modern superhero story, this might be your cup of tea.

Netflix

Pokemon Journeys (2019-)

Netflix has a robust library of past Pokemon anime, and the newest series in the franchise is being produced by Netflix itself. The story follows our favorite forever-10-year-old, Ash Ketchum (go figure), as he continues his Pokemon journey. The show also introduces a host of new characters, including Goh and Chloe, and takes audiences to multiple regions of the Pokemon world, including the most recent, the Galar region. If you're a fan of Pokemon, or have children, this is a great anime to watch.

Nickelodeon

Honorable mention: Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-2008)

OK, Avatar: The Last Airbender isn't technically anime, but it draws so heavily from the art form, and is so perfect, that it would be madness not to mention it here. I missed out on this show when it was still airing on Nickelodeon, and when it resurfaced on Netflix, I dismissed it as solely nostalgic hype. Boy, was I wrong. This show handles complex themes of war propaganda, genocide, duty and honor, all while remaining a lighthearted and upbeat epic tale. Oh, and it also has one of the best character redemption arcs in TV history, period.

Why You May Want to Revoke Precise Location Permissions From Instagram

Why You May Want to Revoke Precise Location Permissions From Instagram

Yes, Instagram, FacebookTikTok and other social media services may keep track of your exact location, but just because they do doesn't mean that people with malicious intent, like stalkers, can see where you are too.

A viral post making the rounds on Instagram and Twitter warns users that people can now find your exact location from Instagram due to a recent iOS update. The post claims criminals are using this location information to break into homes and cars -- but it's just a rumor, and it's not how precise location works.

When you download a new app, you usually grant it access to various features on your iPhone, including your microphone, contacts, photos, camera and location. For instance, an application might ask for your location to provide you with directions or deliver food. However, apps can also use location info to collect data on where you go, and then sell that data to third parties who can use it to tailor advertisements for you.

With the release of iOS 14 in 2020, Apple changed how users could manage their location information. Instead of allowing apps to see your exact coordinates, you can now turn off precise location tracking so that apps instead only get to know approximately where you are.

Whether or not you're worried about criminals or stalkers, you might still be creeped out by social media being able to see everywhere you go. If you want to stop precise location tracking, here's how to turn it off for any application on your iPhone.

Read moreA Sneaky Piece of Data Every iPhone Photo Gives Away (and How to Turn It Off)

To start, make sure you're updated to at least iOS 14 and then head over to the Settings app. Next, scroll down and find the app that you want to prevent from knowing your exact location -- like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or TikTok. Tap on the app you're looking for, then go to Location.

If you've granted this application access to your location, you'll see a checkmark next to either Ask Next Time Or When I Share or While Using the App. Below that, you'll see the "Precise Location" feature. To stop sharing your exact location with this app, toggle off Precise Location.

Precise Location setting on iOS

Don't toggle this feature off for apps that require exact location, like food delivery and navigation services.

Nelson Aguilar/CNET

Once turned off, the app you selected will only have access to an approximate determination of your location. Precise location uses GPS to track you down to the foot, while approximate location will use Wi-Fi and cellular data to place you somewhere in a circle about a mile or two in diameter.

While most applications don't need your exact location, be warned that if you turn off this feature for apps that need your exact location to work -- such as Uber, Google Maps or Doordash -- you might have some problems with those services.

iPhone 14 is trending before the iPhone 13 has even been announced

iPhone 14 is trending before the iPhone 13 has even been announced

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 13 during its "California streaming" event next week, but on Wednesday another device was stealing the spotlight: the iPhone 14.

iPhone 14 was trending on Twitter and Google search on Wednesday, following rumors about the future phone's design. Alleged details of the iPhone 14, which presumably would launch in 2022, were shared by Jon Prosser of Front Page Tech. Prosser, who has a mixed track record on device leaks, said the iPhone 14 would remove the display notch, be thicker with no rear camera bump and feature a titanium frame.

The excitement around the iPhone 14, before the iPhone 13 has even been announced, seems to show people are eager for a notchless iPhone. Previous rumors have suggested Apple may shrink the notch on upcoming iPhones, while others have speculated it could get removed all together. The iPhone 14 rumors shared by Prosser on Wednesday line up with predictions from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in March, who reportedly said some 2022 iPhones will have a punch-hole display design instead of a notch.

As it's more than a year away, it's hard to say with any certainty what Apple might have in store for the iPhone 14. But Apple fans can look forward to seeing the official reveal of the iPhone 13 on Sept. 14. The event, which'll be held virtually, is also expected to introduce a new Apple Watch Series 7

Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Twitter users seemed rattled by rumors about the iPhone 14, which inevitably led to a handful of memes and perplexed tweets.

"iPhone 14 is trending? Did we just skip 13 altogether?" one tweet asks alongside a Math Lady GIF.

"This mans got iPhone 14 trending SIX DAYS before iPhone 13 even launches I am simply deceased," someone remarked about Prosser's post.

Others expressed their sheer outrage at the rumors. "When you just bought an iPhone 12 and people are already talking about the iPhone 14," another tweet reads.

Some people are worried how quickly their current devices are becoming outdated.

"How I feel using my iPhone 8 while everyone else is already onto the iPhone 14," one tweet says, along with an image of a flip phone.

An older device also tends to mean more glitching, as several users joked.

"Me trying to send a text on my IPhone 8+ when the iPhone 14 drops," reads a tweet accompanied by an explosion at a shooting range.

"My iPhone 12 when the iPhone 14 comes out," another quipped, with a similar explosion.

Others are not looking forward to yet another phone upgrade.

"Why are people talking about iPhone 14?? My broke ass can't upgrade," one tweet laments.

There were also some jokes about what the iPhone 14 could look like, especially as phone cameras have gotten bigger and more prominent in recent years.

"Just got the iPhone 14 feeling good," one tweet reads with an image of ridiculously large cameras on the back of the device.

Another poked fun at the design evolution of the iPhone lineup.

"What people thought iPhone 4 would look like vs what iPhone 14 will look like," a tweet says, with an image of a hologram on the left and the rumored iPhone 14 design (which doesn't differ much from current models) on the right.

Google is showing off a video preview of its upcoming phone, the Pixel 6. In a teaser posted Thursday, Google asks the question, "What if a smartphones weren't just smart?"

Images of the phone show a two-toned back with a band near the top around the camera, a design unveiled in August. The phone is expected to come with a new chip designed in-house called Tensor, which could boost computer power and video capabilities. The Pixel 6 Pro model will also be getting an additional telephoto lens with 4x optical zoom.

The teaser says the Pixel 6 is coming in fall 2021.
