2022 Buick Enclave Avenir Review: A Big Ol' Softie

Buick is in a weird spot. The fancier, sportier shadow of Cadillac looms large over this brand, so in order to deliver a product unique enough to earn its own badge, Buick chose to lean in hard on softness, especially with its higher-end Avenir trims. The recently redesigned 2022 Enclave best exemplifies how Buick is positioning itself in the US, and while it's pretty darn boring, it's also pretty darn comfortable and decently well equipped.

The three-row family crossover shape isn't the most daring from the outset, and while the 2022 Enclave's exterior redesign does look fresher than before, it's still not turning too many heads. Swapping out the single-piece headlights for a dual-layer getup does really sharpen things up in the front, but if you strip the badges from the rear end, people could easily confuse it for a Mazda or any other mass-market family machine. The Avenir badges and unique grill help set it apart a bit, but really only from other Enclaves.

The interior has a few more ups than downs. The Enclave Avenir's dashboard is nicely designed, offering some interesting angles without being intrusive. The leather feels nice, but I wish the Avenir's matte wood trim was offered on more than just the door panels and center console; instead, the dash wears a swath of piano-black plastic that picks up smudges and feels a little cheap. Half the controls are parts-bin GM bits. The ugly gear lever is gone, and in its place is a nicer set of buttons that doesn't take long to get used to. The rear windows lack auto-up capability, a signature Detroit cost-cut that shouldn't really happen on a $60,000 SUV.

But even with those warts, practicality and comfort ooze out of every corner. The Enclave's front seats, which pack ventilation and massaging on my tester, are seriously comfortable. The center console is high, but it has a honkin' hidey-hole under the gear lever, in addition to a capacious cubby under the armrest, and the sizable door pockets can pick up whatever's left lying around. The second-row captain's chairs are just as cushy as the front seats, and even with the rails ratcheted as far forward as possible, there's still a surprising amount of room for a 6-foot beanpole like me. Moving the captain's chairs even a little bit gives the power-folding third row an impressive amount of legroom, and headroom is plenty suitable for adults. With 23.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, there's enough room to shove a family's worth of groceries or a few weekender bags, and stowing the way-backs opens up an impressive 57.7 cubes of storage.

The 2022 Buick Enclave Avenir's on-road character is probably best described as slow and steady, like every input is being fed through David Gilmour's delay pedal, or a bowl of molasses. Turn into a corner and the body takes a second to react with some roll. Lean onto the gas pedal and it takes a second for the 3.6-liter V6 to convert throttle position to motive force, although once the nine-speed transmission finally settles on a gear, the engine's 310 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque will be enough for most drivers. Step on the brake pedal and expect a bit of squish before speed begins to shed.

The Buick's V6 is plenty peppy, but electrification is still en route.

My tester packs Buick's $1,595 Avenir Technology Package, which feels like a mandatory addition. Along with fancier headlights, the upgrade includes an adaptive suspension that really ramps up the comfort factor. Nasty bits of road disappear underfoot, and all that's left is a soft ride that feels properly luxurious. There's a Sport mode that firms things up, but… come on, it's a Buick, nobody's taking this thing out to the switchbacks unless it's on the way to the golf course.

The Buick Enclave can be had with either front- or all-wheel drive, but AWD doesn't really affect fuel economy. FWD models are rated at 18 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, with AWD variants coming in 1 mpg lower in each scenario. A combined average of 20 mpg isn't exactly praiseworthy in 2022, but it's about on par with competitors like the Acura MDX (21 mpg combined) and Lincoln Aviator (20). Maintaining a light right foot on the highway helped me see 30 mpg for several minutes at a time, which is nice, but even mild electrification would be better.

Buick's infotainment system is more than fine, but as dashboards across the industry grow to contain ever-larger screens, this one feels a little lacking.

On the tech front, the 2022 Enclave has just about everything you could want, although it lacks any sort of real attention-getter. The standard 8-inch infotainment display runs a newer iteration of the Buick's interface, which is plenty fine and includes all the modern fripperies like a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but the screen is a little small by modern standards (and based on the size of the dash surrounding it). All three rows offer a pair of USB ports, but only the front row gets a zippy USB-C. The Avenir also includes a head-up display that's nice and bright, in addition to a gauge cluster display that shows all the usual information about the vehicle and infotainment system.

Safety-wise, the Enclave Avenir comes with everything Buick can slap on its SUV, including automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, parking sensors, haptic seat feedback and a surround-view camera system. You know what it could use, though? Super Cruise. Too bad there isn't a single Buick that offers GM's limited handsfree tech, as its entire lineup predates the required electrical and data-processing upgrades to handle it.

Buick's ADAS is easy to use, it's just a shame GM couldn't find a way to make Super Cruise work on this generation of vehicles.

For a marque that isn't even at the top of its conglomerate's food chain, the 2022 Buick Enclave Avenir can be a pricey proposition. My AWD tester's sole upgrade is a $1,595 package that brings the base price from $58,295 to $59,890, including $1,195 for the mandatory destination charge. Fully loading up this bad boy can send the price closer to $65,000 territory. That puts it on par with a well-equipped Acura MDX Advance or Lincoln Aviator Reserve, both of which feel far more modern, and the latter can even pack a plug-in hybrid powertrain for some additional scratch. If you'd rather save some simoleons, a fully loaded Mazda CX-9 offers three rows of Nappa leather seats for about $50,000, and its engine is more potent, but you'll have to make do with Mazda's middling infotainment. Hell, if you don't need the third row, you're sitting in Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class territory at this price point, and that is a tough act to top.

The 2022 Buick Enclave Avenir is kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. While it's done a commendable job carving out its own niche in GM's hierarchy by focusing on smoothness above all else, efforts that pay off in on-road placidity, it lacks any sort of stand-out factor that brings new customers through dealership doors. That might be enough for legacy buyers, but it may be insufficient against a wave of ever-more-impressive large SUVs.

Twitter Sues Elon Musk to Complete $44B Purchase

The legal showdown between billionaire Elon Musk and Twitter has officially begun.

On Tuesday, Twitter sued Musk to complete his $44 billion purchase of the social media platform, a move that sets up what will likely be a messy and lengthy court battle. The stakes are high for Twitter as the company deals with fallout from what has been a chaotic relationship with the world's richest man. 

In a 62-page lawsuit filed in Delaware's Court of Chancery, Twitter pushed back against several arguments Musk's legal team made when the billionaire told Twitter he no longer planned to buy the company. Twitter accused Musk of breaching the agreement and called his exit strategy a "model of hypocrisy."

The lawsuit notes that Musk's stake in his company Tesla declined by more than $100 billion from its peak in November 2021 and that's the reason why the billionaire wants to back out of the deal.

"Musk apparently believes that he — unlike every other party subject to Delaware contract law — is free to change his mind, trash the company, disrupt its operations, destroy stockholder value, and walk away," the complaint stated. 

Last week, Musk informed Twitter in a letter that he was ending the agreement to buy the social media company. At the time, Twitter said it planned to take legal action to enforce the agreement. Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, argued that Twitter breached the agreement by not disclosing details about how it estimates the number of spam accounts on the platform. Twitter estimated in the first quarter that fewer than 5% of Twitter's 229 million daily users were fake or spam-focused but Musk thinks the number is much higher. The billionaire said getting that information was an important part of understanding Twitter's business, which makes most of its money from ads.

Twitter said in the lawsuit that Musk was well aware that there were caveats to the data and the agreement said that the information he requested must be for a "reasonable business purpose" related to completing the deal. Musk made "unreasonable" requests but Twitter still tried to work with him to get him more information. His requests for more data, Twitter alleges in the lawsuit, were "designed to try to tank the deal." The company also had concerns about how Musk, who has suggested building a competitor to Twitter, would use their data if he was able to successfully end the deal. Twitter notes that Musk's ability to end the agreement is very limited but he "wanted an escape." 

The New York Times, which reported the lawsuit earlier, said that Twitter told employees in a memo the company is seeking a four-day trial in September. In a motion filed on Tuesday, Twitter asks the Delaware court to speed up the process to protect its shareholders and the company from the potential harm that comes from Musk's efforts to "bully his way" out of the deal. Twitter's stock dropped 11% on Monday to $32.65 per share days after Musk announced he didn't want to purchase the company. 

Under the merger agreement, Twitter and Musk have until Oct. 24 to complete the deal. Shareholders would still need to approve the deal in a special meeting.

In its lawsuit, Twitter also alleges that Musk violated the agreement by making public comments Twitter didn't consent to and posting disparaging tweets. In May, Musk tweeted a "misrepresentation" of how many accounts Twitter samples to estimate the number of spam accounts on its platform, according to the lawsuit. Musk also tweeted that Twitter's legal team complained to him about violating a nondisclosure agreement. When Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal tweeted more details about how the company battles spam accounts, Musk replied with a poop emoji.

The lawsuit cites other tweets Musk shared over the weekend after telling Twitter he wanted to back out of the deal. One tweet included a meme with actor Chuck Norris in front of a chess board.

"For Musk, it would seem, Twitter, the interests of its stockholders, the transaction Musk agreed to, and the court process to enforce it all constitute an elaborate joke," the lawsuit said.

Twitter rebutted other arguments Musk is trying to make to end the deal. Musk alleges Twitter violated a part of the agreement that said the company had to seek and obtain consent before straying from "its obligation to conduct its business in the ordinary course," after the social network fired key executives, laid off staff and froze hiring. But Twitter said in the lawsuit that the company did negotiate a right to hire and fire employees at all levels without having to seek Musk's consent. The company, though, did try to be cautious and sought Musk's consent for several key decisions, including about two employee retention programs but he was "non-committal."

The lawsuit also reveals that Twitter was suspicious that Musk was abandoning efforts to finance the deal. When the social network tried to get more information about how Musk was going to pay for the company, the billionaire sent a text to Agrawal and Twitter Chief Financial Officer Ned Segal.

"Your lawyers are using these conversations to cause trouble," Musk said in a text that Twitter cited in the lawsuit. "That needs to stop."

The lawsuit was widely expected. Over the weekend, Twitter called Musk's termination of the deal both "invalid and wrongful." 

Bret Taylor, the chair of the social network's board, announced the filing in a tweet, saying the company aimed to hold Musk "accountable to his contractual obligations." 

Dan Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities, said the wrangling between Musk and Twitter had produced "no winners."

"This has been a black eye for Musk and horror movie for Twitter (and its employees) with no winners since the soap opera began in April," he said in a note. Potential outcomes include a settlement, a breakup fee and the deal being enforced. The agreement between Musk and Twitter included a $1 billion termination fee.

Musk's lawyer Mike Ringler didn't respond to a request for comment. 

After Twitter filed the lawsuit, Musk tweeted, "Oh the irony lol."

Tesla recalls over 54,000 models over FSD update that disobeys stop signs

Remember when we told you last month that Tesla's latest software update to its Full Self-Driving tech might result in vehicles that intentionally -- and illegally -- run stop signs? It appears the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration took issue with the electric car company's new "Assertive" mode's capabilities. On Tuesday, the government safety agency posted a notice detailing the recall of 53,822 Model SModel XModel 3 and Model Y vehicles due to the issue.

The new setting for Tesla's still-in-beta driver-assist technology specifically calls out that vehicles with the mode activated "... will have a smaller follow distance, perform more frequent speed lane changes, will not exit passing lanes and may perform rolling stops."

That last bit -- a deliberate decision by Tesla programmers to allow vehicles to slow-roll through stops -- is what is triggering the recall of these 2016-2022 Model S and Model X EVs, as well as 2017-2022 Model 3 and 2020-2022 Model Y vehicles. 

According to related NHTSA documents, the uncorrected software "allows the vehicle to travel through all-way-stop intersections at up to 5.6 mph before coming to a complete stop, if certain conditions are first met." Those conditions include an absence of "relevant" moving cars, pedestrians or bicyclists detected near the intersection, and all entering roads must have speed limits of 30 mph or less. It's not clear how often this version of FSD engages in dangerous or illegal driving behavior. 

Tesla EVs with the firmware release 2020.40.10 or newer that include the FSD Beta are affected by this recall campaign.

The update enabling Assertive mode was released on Oct. 20, 2021, and NHTSA and Tesla met to "discuss the functionality" on Jan. 10 and 19, 2022. On Jan. 20, "a recall determination was voluntarily made to disable the functionality, beginning with firmware release 2021.44.30.15 and newer releases."

The good news is the rolling-stop functionality should be disabled as easily as it was added -- via over-the-air update, free of charge. No visit to a Tesla authorized service center should be necessary.

As of Jan. 27, Tesla says it is unaware of any crashes, injuries or fatalities related to this issue. Tesla does not operate a public relations team and did not respond to Roadshow's request for comment for this story.

Ahead of Splatoon 3, Nintendo has released a Splatoon-themed Nintendo Switch OLED system. The console is on sale now and comes with a specially themed dock and purple and yellow Joy-Con controllers. The system will cost $360, slightly more expensive than the standard Switch OLED.

On top of that, Nintendo will launch a Splatoon-themed Switch Pro Controller. It goes on sale alongside the game on Sep. 9 and features blue and yellow grips, as well as Splatoon splatters and logos across the body. The controller will retail for $75.

In addition to the game, Nintendo is releasing three new Splatoon Amiibo figures: Octoling (blue), Inkling (Yellow) and Smallfry. The figures are slated to launch sometime this holiday.

Nintendo will also be reprinting older Splatoon Amiibo ahead of Splatoon 3's release, including the Squid Sisters and Off the Hook figures.

Nintendo has also confirmed it will release a "large-scale" paid DLC for Splatoon 3. No other information has been announced yet, but the teaser image included silhouettes of Pearl and Marina, the popular idols from Splatoon 2. Nintendo says more details "will come at a later time."

Splatoon 3 launches on Sep. 9. We recently went hands-on with the game and thought it feels familiar but features exciting possibilities. Players who subscriber to the Nintendo Switch Online plus Expansion Pack plan can also play Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion at no additional cost.

If you have even a passing interest in drones, you probably know the name DJI, which is a market leader in drones of all shapes, sizes and prices. The Tello is a fun and friendly drone that was a collaboration between Ryze Tech and DJI, and the Tello Iron Man Edition is exactly what it sounds like. Usually $130, right now the Ryze Tell Iron Man Edition is selling for $96 at Woot. That's 26% off the regular price.

First things first: Woot claims the drone's regular price is $150, which is simply wrong. Don't be misled; the Iron Man edition is $130, which itself is $30 more than the regular, non-superhero Tello, which you can get for $99.

So that begs the question: Is the Iron Man version of the Tello ordinarily worth a few extra bucks? The Iron Man updates are really only skin deep; it has the same motors and chassis, intelligent flight modes and 720p, 5-megapixel camera as the original Tello. The difference is the Iron Man armor detailing on the drone, and an Iron Man-themed mobile app (it's the same as the regular app, but it is skinned to make you feel like you're a member of SHIELD).

You get 13 minutes of flight time on a charge and the app has a few preprogrammed flight patterns, a precision hold feature that keeps it steady where you want it, and it's easy to shoot stills and video or just fly around. Extra batteries, blades and prop guards are available. 

So, bottom line, this deal lets you get the Tello with an Iron Man paint job -- which usually costs $30 more because Marvel -- for the same price as the ordinary Tello. That's a decent deal.
