If you're looking for a new laptop, you'll likely come across a few options from Dell, no matter your budget or computing needs. Along with Lenovo and HP, Dell is one of the big three PC manufacturers and offers a wide selection of Windows-based laptops. 

On Dell's sprawling website you'll see a constantly rotating selection of laptop sales. You can save on everything from low-end Inspiron laptops for basic use to high-end XPS laptops built for content creation and media editing. And gamers can find some deep discounts on Dell's own Alienware brand of gaming laptops that feature the latest AMD and Intel silicon and Nvidia RTX 30 series graphics.

I scoured Dell's Laptop Deals and XPS Deals pages to find the best bargains, including big price breaks on a few of our favorite laptops. Tracking Dell's deals is a bit like trying to hit a moving target, however. The prices and discounts are valid at the time of this writing, and I'll update this story as sales expire and new deals begin.

When shopping for a laptop with a budget less than $1,000, the first items I look for are a modern CPU, at least 16GB of RAM and 512GB or more of solid-state storage. Many models at this price force you to make do with a previous-generation or underpowered processor, a meager 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD that you are sure to fill up fast. This Inspiron 16 5000 features a 12th-gen Intel Core i7 CPU along with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. The 16-inch touchscreen has a 1,920x1,200-pixel resolution with a tall 16:10 aspect ratio. The screen is roomy but not the brightest; it's rated for a mere 250 nits of brightness.

Dell

This 13-inch XPS laptop checks a lot of boxes. Modern CPU? Check. Ample RAM? Check. Plenty of solid-state storage? Check. Roomy and bright display? Check and check. Thin and light, and all-metal design? Check, check and check. It centers on a 13.4-inch, 16:10 display powered by a 12th-gen Core i7 CPU and 32GB of RAM. It also supplies a huge 1TB SSD. You might not think of a 13.4-inch display as roomy, but the taller 16:10 aspect ratio does wonders to make it feel larger than a widescreen 13.3-inch, 16:9 display with which you might be familiar. The machined aluminum chassis is a sleek 0.55 inches thick and weighs only 2.6 pounds.

Dell's 15-inch XPS laptop isn't necessarily geared toward gamers, but this configuration certainly can handle AAA titles with its 11th-gen Core i7-11800H CPU and GeForce RTX 3050 Ti graphics. You also get 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD -- both sufficient. The OLED touchscreen has what Dell calls 3.5K resolution (3,456x2,160 pixels) in a 16:10 aspect ratio for more vertical space and less scrolling. It's rated for a bright 400 nits and should offer stellar contrast and vibrant colors.

The big-screen XPS 17 is geared more toward creative work than 3D gaming with its huge display powered by an 11th-gen Core i7. You also get 16GB of RAM and a roomy 512GB SSD. The 17-inch screen has a 4K (3,840x2,400-pixel) resolution with a tall 16:10 aspect ratio and is rated for an impressive 500 nits of brightness. It's rather compact for a 17-inch laptop, and boasts a machine-milled aluminum chassis and a black carbon fiber palm rest.

The 15.6-inch display has full HD resolution and a speedy 165Hz refresh rate. Okay, but could you swing $699? Because the official DJI Ebay store has the refurbished Mavic Pro with remote for $699 shipped -- by far the lowest price I've seen for this highly celebrated quadcopter.

First things first: a refurbished drone? That must mean "crashed and glued back together," right? Nah, these are fully inspected and certified to be good as new, and they come with a full one-year warranty, same as new Mavic Pros.

Second: You may find this model selling new for maybe $50 more, but chances are good it won't come with a remote. Trust me when I say you want the remote.

The Mavic Pro is capable of pretty much all the best drone tricks, including following you around, flying to and from waypoints and so on. It can capture 4K video via its built-in gimbal-assisted camera, and it will avoid obstacles so it's less likely to have an unfortunate encounter with a tree.

I especially like the fold-up arms, which make the Mavic much easier to toss into a bag or backpack. The controller also folds up into a nice, compact little bundle.

Take note though, extra batteries are crazy-expensive (around $150 apiece), and there's definitely a learning curve if you want to take advantage of the various flight modes. (Watch the how-to videos, they help a lot.)

Obviously this is still a pricey item for most folks, but it's also a huge discount on arguably the best consumer drone currently available. It was too good not to share!

Apple sues Pegasus for spyware maker. How to check if your iPhone has NSO Group software

In the ongoing battle between Apple and the Pegasus spyware, the iPhone maker today said it was suing the NSO Group -- the maker of surveillance software. Apple said it is seeking to protect its users from "further abuse and harm" with a permanent injunction to ban NSO Group from using the iPhone maker's hardware, software or devices, Apple said in a release.

The spyware can be remotely installed on a target's iPhone or iPad, granting the person or organization who installed it full access to the device and all the data it holds -- without the owner taking any action. That includes text messages, emails and even recording phone calls. Pegasus was originally designed and is marketed by its creator the NSO Group to monitor criminals and terrorists.

Apple with an iPhone security patch in iOS 14.8 in September closed a vulnerability reportedly exploited by invasive spyware built by NSO Group.

While's there probably little chance a government entity would install Pegasus on your iPhone to monitor your activities, if you are curious, there's a free tool that allows you to check your iPhone or iPad with a few clicks. To be clear, the odds of your iPhone or iPad being infected by the Pegasus spyware are low. That said, if you want peace of mind -- just in case -- here's what you need to do, along with installing the iOS update.

Download and install iMazing's app on your Mac or PC

iMazing has updated its desktop app to include Amnesty International's Mobile Verification Toolkit, which was built to detect signs of Pegasus on a device. The company isn't charging for access to the feature. 

Download iMazing for your computer from the company's website. Don't worry about buying the app: You can run the full spyware test using just the free trial.

Install iMazing and open it. When prompted, select the free trial. 

The longest part is waiting for the app to make a backup of your iPhone or iPad.

How to run the Pegasus Spyware scan on your iPhone or iPad

With iMazing installed and running, connect your iPhone or iPad to the computer. You may have to enter the Lock Screen code on your device to approve the connection before proceeding (something to keep in mind if your iPhone or iPad isn't showing up in iMazing). 

Next, scroll down through the action options on the right-hand side of iMazing until you locate Detect Spyware; click it. 

A new window will open, guiding you through the process. The tool works by creating a local backup of your device (so you'll need to make sure you have enough storage space for the backup), and then analyzing that backup. It's an automated task, so you don't have to stick around to monitor it once you click start. 

iMazing suggests leaving all of the default settings in place as you click through each screen. There are configuration options built into the tool for advanced users, but for most of us (including myself), the default configuration settings will get the job done. 

After going through the basic configuration, you'll need to accept a license for the tool and then click the Start Analysis button. 

Once the process starts, make sure you leave your iPhone or iPad connected until it's finished. I ran the test on my iPhone 12 Pro and it took around 30 minutes to create the backup and another five minutes for it to be analyzed. After the backup was created, I did have to enter my account password to allow iMazing to begin analyzing the file. Because of that, I recommend starting the tool and checking on it after a while. 

Once iMazing begins analyzing your device's backup, it'll show you its progress by displaying each individual app it's checking, starting with iMessage. The app is using a database of known "malicious email addresses, links, process names and file names"

When iMazing finishes, you'll see an alert with the results. In my case, my iPhone 12 Pro showed no signs of infection and had 0 warnings. 

The alert also includes two buttons to open or reveal the report. I looked through my report, and it contained a bunch of random links that meant nothing to me. 

At the end of the scan, the results are displayed in an easy-to-read alert.

What to do if the iMazing app says your device has signs of an infection

First of all, don't panic. It could be a false positive. If this happens, iMazing asks that you send the report (click Reveal Report to go directly to the file) to its customer support team for further analysis. The company does suggest, however, that if you or a family member are active in a "politically sensitive context" and have a positive report to immediately remove your SIM card and turn off your iPhone or iPad.

If your phone is not infected, you still want to install the latest update on your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Mac, which addresses the vulnerability.

If you're a coffee drinker who needs a solid, all-purpose (relatively) inexpensive coffee grinding machine, I recommend the $100 Oxo Brew Conical Burr Grinder as the best coffee grinder overall. In terms of grind consistency, the Oxo Conical Burr Coffee Grinder placed second within my test group. That's behind the $200 Breville Smart Grinder Pro, which ranked first in grinding but also costs twice as much. The Oxo Brew Conical Burr Grinder, however, can grind beans faster. And while it has fewer coarse grind settings, Oxo's stainless steel machine is more versatile. The Oxo burr coffee grinder can grind fine enough to be used as an espresso grinder in a pinch. The stainless steel Oxo coffee grinding machine can also produce coffee grounds coarse enough for brewing a cup of siphon, French press and cold brew. Other pros are that the Oxo Brew is easy to clean and creates less of a mess when grinding than other grinders. $100 might sound like a lot, but keep in mind a quality coffee and espresso grinder should grind for a long time.

You can't get much simpler than Baratza's $170 Encore. The Encore Conical Burr Grinder has just one control: a switch that turns the grinder on and off. That's not just easy -- that's easy easy. Continually pressing a button on the Encore's front activates the grind, too. Grounds from the Baratza grinder were relatively consistent in particle size. The machine is also simple to clean and less noisy when grinding than many other coffee grinders we've tested.

If you want a cup of espresso, here's an espresso maker to look at. You'll pay a little more for grinding with the $200 brushed stainless steel Smart Grinder Pro. But if you've got your heart set on pulling espresso shots at home, the Smart Grinder Pro is the best coffee grinder for espresso, cup after cup. This Smart Grinder with stainless steel burrs can produce extremely fine coffee grounds, the sort necessary for brewing quality espresso or Turkish coffee. The machine also created the most consistently sized grounds of all the machines I tested. The Breville boasts 60 grind settings, and it comes with adapters for espresso machine portafilters. If you like brewing siphon, French press or cold brew though, consider looking elsewhere. Even at its most coarse, this coffee bean grinder's grounds are too fine for those methods.

So, how exactly do we test coffee grinders?

An ideal coffee grinder produces ground particles that are of a consistent and correct size. By that, we mean that the size of ground coffee particles should match its grinder's coarseness setting, fine or not. The size of grounds produced should also be fit for the intended brewing method, as outlined within the product manual.

To test each grinder for our coffee grinder reviews, we first hand-wash and dry all parts recommended by the manufacturer. We then set each machine to the appropriate level for grinding drip coffee or automatic coffee brewers (again, as indicated by the manual). Sometimes the manual lacks specific directions. In this case, we select the middle coarse setting for grinding coffee, then bump it up by one more coarse level (from fine grind, such as an espresso grind, to coarse grind). For example, if a grinder has 16 total coarse grind settings (assuming 16 is its most coarse grinding option and 1 is fine), we'll set it for coarse level 9.

Next we weigh out 10 grams of whole coffee beans to grind. By default our test beans are Kirkland Colombian roast. It's the same beans we use for our coffee maker tests. (No judgments, please.) When you grind as much coffee and espresso as we do, it pays to be frugal.

Then we run our sample beans through the grinder. We also make note of how long the grinder takes to grind coffee beans. Next, we carefully collect the grounds, then sift them with a two-screen sieve for 60 seconds. For that we use the Kruve Sifter system. Our original Kruve Two unit came with two mesh screens of different aperture sizes (800 and 400 microns). This step lets us measure the grind size and grind consistency of our sample. The Kruve Base has now replaced the Kruve Two, and offers five mesh screens (300, 500, 800, 1,100, and 1,400 microns).

We used a Kruve coffee sieve system to confirm grind size consistency.

A superior electric coffee grinder or hand grinder will produce grounds, preferably with stainless steel blades, that are mostly between 400 and 800 microns in particle size (at our chosen grind settings). Finally, we weigh the grounds that collect between the two screens (800 microns top, 400 microns bottom).

A bad grinder will grind particles of varying sizes, from large to small. Blade grinders are notorious for this issue. Unlike a blade coffee grinder, a coffee grinder with steel or ceramic burrs typically yields grounds that are much more uniform in grind size.

Additionally, we grind at least two more times. From there, we can record an average optimal yield for each grinder.

Meta has turned off augmented reality filters for Facebook and Instagram in Texas and Illinois due to facial recognition and privacy laws in those states.  

Although Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, said its AR technology is "not facial recognition," it's temporarily shutting down its AR filters and avatars in both states to prevent "meritless and distracting litigation." The decision comes a day after a settlement was reached in an ACLU lawsuit filed in Illinois against Clearview AI, a facial recognition company that was selling its database to private companies. 

Meta said it will create an opt-in experience to bring those AR effects back to its platforms soon. AR effects are also turned off across Messenger, Messenger Kids, Facebook and Portal in both Texas and Illinois. 

The company maintains that the tech it uses to create its AR effects and applications isn't facial recognition technology and isn't used for identification purposes. 

"The technology we use to power augmented reality effects like avatars and filters is not facial recognition or any technology covered by the Texas and Illinois laws, and is not used to identify anyone," Meta said in a statement. The company shut down its Face recognition system last year, erasing the face scan data of more than 1 billion users. 

Facebook has faced scrutiny over its facial recognition technology in recent years, with a judge awarding a landmark $650 million settlement in favor of users in a class-action suit in Illinois last year. Texas is also suing the social media giant over its use of facial recognition technology, asserting that it didn't appropriately obtain consent for Texans' biometric data, which violates the state's privacy laws.

Yahoo Mobile launched in March with unlimited talk, text and 4G LTE data for $40 a month, with taxes and fees included. Customers who buy the Yahoo phone can take advantage of other perks on the Yahoo Mobile service plan including ad-free email with Yahoo Mail Pro and an unlimited mobile hotspot that can be used on one connected device at a time.

Over time the company may expand the perks it offers based on the Yahoo services that its customers want, Verizon Media CEO Guru Gowrappan tells CNET. Someone who is a big Yahoo Finance user, he says, may have the option to get free access to its Yahoo Finance Premium offering, while a Yahoo Sports fan would get free betting credits or promotions for the company's sportsbook, assuming they are in a state where sports gambling is legalized.

The new ZTE phone is available in the US now. Customers can also subscribe to Yahoo Mobile service with the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro while the iPhone 12 Pro Max and 12 Mini will be available in November. Verizon's 5G network will be included with all Yahoo Mobile plans and available on compatible devices later this year, the company said.

It's been over a month since Russia invaded Ukraine, and worries about cybersecurity continue to grow. Even before the invasion, US officials blamed Russia for cyberattacks against some Ukrainian websites, including Ukraine's Ministry of Defense and two banks.

While the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said there are no specific or credible cyberthreats against the US, the agency also said potential cyberattacks are more likely to target infrastructure. CISA is recommending everyone be prepared just in case. And securing your mobile device is a good place to start when building a line of cyberdefense. Here are six steps Android users can take to protect their phone data. 

Make sure your OS is up to date

Updating your operating system can patch known security vulnerabilities and fix bugs. Not updating to the latest version leaves you and your device open to flaws that could expose personal data to malicious actors. Some people might put off updating their OS so they don't have to deal with early bugs in the system, but waiting too long can harm your system. Here's what to know about the latest Android OS, Android 12. 

Turn on two-factor authentication

Two-factor authentication , or 2FA, adds a second layer of security to your Android account in case your password gets stolen. With 2FA, once you enter your password, a second message is sent to another device asking to verify that you are trying to login. It adds a bit more time to your login process, but the extra layer of security is well worth it. Here's how to turn on 2FA.

Use a password manager

If you're having trouble memorizing multiple passwords and coming up with unique passwords for every account, a password manager can help. These utilities can work hand-in-hand with 2FA and can securely store passwords and automatically fill login pages. They can also protect you against phishing scams that direct you to enter your password into a fraudulent website. Encrypt your Android

Starting in 2015, Google required manufacturers to make Android devices encryptable out of the box. Once your device is encrypted, all data stored on the device is locked behind a PIN code, fingerprint, pattern or password known by the owner. Without that key, not even Google can unlock your device. Here you can find out how to encrypt your phone.

Remove your data from Google

Android is a Google product, so unencrypted device data could be stored on a Google server. You can check with Google to see what data of yours it has, and you can ask Google to delete that data. The process can take time, but it's worth the effort -- your data can't be stolen if it's not in the system to begin with. When all else fails, delete your phone
