You Can Finally Use Snapchat on Your Computer, but There's a Catch

There's never been an official way to use Snapchat on your computer -- until now.

The social media company introduced Snapchat for Web on Monday, which allows you to continue your Snapchat conversations online, via web browser. You'll be able to initiate and receive video and voice calls, as well as send text-based Snaps.

For now, the service is limited to Snapchat Plus subscribers, which costs $4 a month, but the company does plan to make this new feature available to all of its users in the future, paid or not, according to their announcement, through it didn't offer a timetable.

If you're a Snapchat Plus subscriber and want to use Snapchat on your computer, here's how.

To use Snapchat for Web on your computer, go to web.snapchat.com in either Chrome or Edge, and then log in with your Snapchat account. Unfortunately, you can't access Snapchat for Web on any other web browser, like Safari or Firefox -- for now.

Once you log in, you'll be able to send messages and make video and voice calls from your computer. Popular features like Chat Reactions and Chat Reply are also accessible, while Lenses will roll out soon.

Snapchat for Web

Pick up where you left off on mobile.

Snapchat

Snapchat for Web is only available to Snapchat Plus subscribers in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada, and all Snapchat users in Australia and New Zealand.

Android 13 Is Coming: Every Feature We Know of So Far

The Android 13 public beta arrived last month and with it came a clearer idea of the new features and functions coming to the rumored Pixel 7, plus eventually other Android devices later this year. Between the beta and speculation from leakers, we're already learning a lot about how Android 13 could build on Android 12's privacy features, user-interface enhancements and Material You design overhaul. And we're likely to get even more clarity on the next-gen OS at Google I/O, which starts today.

If you're curious about Android 13's release date, or if you're wondering what new features could hit your phone in the coming months (here are some of the best hidden features from Android 12), we recommend bookmarking this page. We'll be periodically updating it with all the Android 13 buzz we can find.

When's the Android 13 release date?

Although Google has not publicly revealed a specific release date for Android 13, the Android Developers blog provides a rough timeline for the rollout, with a beta coming out every month through July. The beta in July is listed as the "near-final build for final testing."

Judging from precedent, Android 13 could debut a month after that final beta. Android 12's fifth and final beta came out in September 2021, and Google officially released the app in October. With Android 11 (2020) and Android 10 (2019), the final betas dropped in August, and the OS hit phones in September. So we can reasonably assume that Android 13 will arrive in August this year. If not, September is a safe bet.

Keep in mind that Google sends Android updates to its Pixel phones first (and will probably ship the rumored Pixel 7 with Android 13). If you have a different Android phone, like a Samsung, Motorola or OnePlus, you'll likely have to wait a few months after the initial release to experience Android 13.

New photo privacy feature

Android 12 introduced a kill switch that allows you to prevent apps from accessing your camera and mic, and it also added the option to show apps your approximate location instead of your exact whereabouts.

It appears that Android 13 will bolster these privacy settings. According to Google's Android Developers blog, Android 13 will include a photo picker. This means when an app wants access to your images and videos -- like social media and photo editing apps often do -- you can select specific media files to share instead of granting access to all of them. (Android already has a document picker that allows for the same thing.)

Apps need your permission to notify you

The second developer preview for Android 13 introduced a new feature called "notification permission," the Android Developers blog said. In order to send you notifications, apps will need you to give them your permission -- and you can say "no." The blog post shows a dialog box that asks, "Allow [App] to send you notifications?" (You're then prompted to select "Allow" or "Don't allow".) Apple already requires developers to obtain your permission for apps to send you notifications.

Upgraded design with more color options

The Material You redesign was the star of the show for Android 12, featuring UI color schemes that automatically adjust based on the wallpaper you select. The Android Developers blog says Android 13 will add even more color customization to Material You.

In Android 12, only Google apps work with the adjustable color palette feature. But Android 13 will expand the feature to all apps, as long as the apps' developers agree to design alternate icons that are monochromatic.

A rumor from AndroidPolice citing a "trusted source" says Android 13 will let you choose more options for color customization. Among these are "spritz," a desaturated version of the color scheme, and "expressive," which incorporates hues differing from those that come by default with your wallpaper selection.

Notifications about battery-draining apps

You'd be surprised how much of your battery life a single app can gobble up -- even when you're not actively using the app. Android 13 will send you a notification when an app uses a significant portion of your battery over the course of a day, according to the Android Developers blog.

Adapting an iOS perk

The flashlights on Apple's iPhones have offered adjustable brightness for years, but a rumor from Android analyst Mishaal Rahman says Google will finally integrate the feature into Android 13, allowing for some customization when you're using the phone as a light source.

But Rahman says a lot of current Androids don't have the hardware required to use this feature. Perhaps the rumored Pixel 7 will. If you have a Samsung phone, though, Samsung's software overlay One UI already lets you adjust the torch brightness.

Will my phone be compatible with Android 13?

If you own a Pixel 4 or Pixel 4A, Android 13 might be the last supported software update your phone can receive. This prediction is based solely on precedent: Android 12 is probably the last update for the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3A, and Android 11 was the last for the Pixel 2.

If your Pixel 3 or 3A ends up being incompatible with Android 13, you can still keep using it with an older OS. But this means you won't have access to the latest security patches, and that could put your data at risk.

How to download Android 13

For now, don't. As exciting as the previews may be, early betas can make some apps stop working on your device for good. They usually have bugs and can put a damper on your battery life. (CNET's Jason Cipriani experienced this while testing the iOS 15 betas.) If you have a spare Android lying around, go for it -- but we strongly caution against subjecting your main phone to bugs.

If you're really feeling risky, though, here's how to get Android 13 in its current state. Don't say we didn't warn you.

Even as we look forward to everything Android 13 will bring, it's worth exploring all the highlights from Android 12. Last year's OS had fun hidden features, including Game Mode and One-Handed Mode. Also, be sure to check out the Android 12 Easter egg

If you're curious about the best phones you can buy in 2022, we've put together a list that includes the Google Pixel 6 Pro and last year's Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra.

NXT TakeOver New York: Results and full match card

NXT TakeOver New York: Results and full match card

WrestleMania is undoubtedly spectacular, but many dedicated grappling fans are even more excited about Tonight's show, NXT TakeOver: New York. NXT is technically WWE's developmental brand, broadly similar to what college football is to the NFL. However, NXT is home to some of the wrestling world's most experienced performers, like 11-year veteran Adam Cole and the even more seasoned Johnny Gargano.

These two awesome wrestlers will be in the main event for the vacant NXT Championship in what's sure to be an outstanding match, by the way. Also look out for Velveteen Dream, less experienced in the ring but with one of the company's biggest personalities, who takes on Matt Riddle.

NXT doesn't just have different performers to WWE's main roster, but a whole different vibe. While WrestleMania will be over five hours long, TakeOver shows are known for cramming five terrific matches into under three hours. The "leave them wanting more" approach, if you will.

And while WWE puts pay-per-view events on the WWE Network each month, there are only around five NXT TakeOver shows a year. The WrestleMania-weekend TakeOver show is always the biggest, with long-term feuds culminating in front of wrestling's most rabid fans. This year's show was slightly derailed by the injury of now-former NXT Champion Tomasso Ciampa, but don't let that deter you.

If you're looking for quality bell-to-bell action, NXT TakeOver: New York is your best bet.

Start times

NXT TakeOver: New York takes place in, you guessed it, New York. More specifically, at Brooklyn's Barclay's Center.

The show starts at 4 p.m. PT, 7 p.m. ET. Unlike WWE pay-per-views, this one can't be ordered through your local cable provider. If you don't happen to be in the greater New York area on Friday, your only bet is the WWE Network. If you're a subscriber then you already know the deal. If not, it's $9.99 per month -- but you get your first month free.

Viewers in the UK will have to stay up late, as the show starts there at midnight Saturday. For Australians, NXT TakeOver starts at 10 a.m. AEDT time.

Match card (winners in bold)

  • NXT Championship match: Johnny Gargano versus Adam Cole
  • NXT North American Championship match: Velveteen Dream versus Matt Riddle
  • NXT Women's Championship match: Shayna Baszler versus Io Shirai versus Bianca Belair versus Kairi Sane
  • WWE United Kingdom Championship match: Pete Dunn versus Walter
  • NXT Tag Team Championship match: War Raiders versus Aleister Black and Ricochet

Melania Trump launches her own NFT platform

Melania Trump launched a platform for selling NFTs, or nonfungible tokens, the former first lady said Thursday. The first limited edition piece of digital artwork, titled "Melania's Vision" will be on sale until Dec. 31.

These unique tokens are tied to digital assets like a video, meme or, in this case, a painting. Their ownership is recorded in a ledger within the blockchain, similarly to cryptocurrency.

Trump's first NFT is a watercolor by Marc-Antoine Coulon and includes an audio recording from the former first lady, who left office when her husband Donald Trump's presidential term ended in January.

It'll cost around $150 and a portion of the proceeds will "assist children aging out of the foster care system by way of economic empowerment and with expanded access to resources needed to excel in the fields of computer science and technology."

New NFTs will be released on the platform, which uses the Solana blockchain platform and is powered by conservative social media service Parler, on a regular basis.

"I am proud to announce my new NFT endeavor, which embodies my passion for the arts, and will support my ongoing commitment to children through my Be Best initiative," Trump said in a release.

Trump's office didn't immediately respond to a request for further comment on what percentage of the proceeds will go to the initiative.

Lenovo brings AMD to its gaming laptops

It's a big week for AMD and Lenovo's partnership: On Wednesday, the two co-launched the new Ryzen Threadripper Pro processor for Lenovo's new ThinkStation P620, and Thursday, Lenovo followed up with new gaming systems. They're essentially variations on the Intel-based systems announced in May.

The laptop CPU of choice for the laptops is unsurprisingly AMD's Ryzen 4000 H series, the current-gen equivalent of the 10th-gen Intel H versions. They all can be configured with up to the Ryzen 7 4800H. The desktop incorporates the Ryzen 7 X series, AMD's counterpart to Intel's K series, topping out at the 16-core Ryzen 7 3950X.

The Legion 5 15-inch with GeForce GTX GPUs is available now starting at $760; with GeForce RTX, it will begin shipping in August starting at $1,020. The 17-inch model ships in September starting at $1,090.

You'll be able to get the IdeaPad Gaming 3 some time this month starting at $660, and the Legion Tower 5 desktop is coming in October beginning at $830. The starting prices are significantly lower than those of the current Intel models.

Two of the new models, the Legion 5P and IdeaCentre Gaming 5, won't be available in North America.

How Soon Can You Get Pregnant After Stopping Birth Control?

How Soon Can You Get Pregnant After Stopping Birth Control?

If you're considering stopping birth control for any reason, it's important to understand your reproductive system so you aren't shocked by a pregnancy or disappointed that it didn't happen immediately.

"I tell my patients not to stop their birth control until they're ready to get pregnant," says Dr. Leena Nathan, an OB-GYN at University of California, Los Angeles Health. Whether it's the IUD, the pill or another birth control method, most people return to their normal fertility "pretty much immediately."

Some patients who stop birth control conceive before their first period off the pill, Nathan says. And while everyone's body is different and not everyone will get pregnant the month they stop the pill or remove their IUD, there's no fertility latency period for the majority of birth control methods out there.

There are many different types of birth control: pills, patches, condoms, sponges and T-shaped devices that sit in your uterus. And like always, no two people are alike, and factors other birth control use play into someone's chance of conceiving. So how can you know when you'll be fertile after foregoing birth control and letting your reproductive system do its thing?

The return of fertility after stopping the pill

Birth control pills  either have a combination of two hormones, estrogen and progestin, which work primarily by stopping ovulation, or come as progestin-only pills (also called the "mini pill") which mostly work by disrupting fertilization through changes to the cervical mucus and uterine lining. With either pill, you're safe to start trying to conceive immediately after you stop taking the pill, Nathan says. (In other words, the claim that you need to wait three months is a myth.)

Because ovulation resumes quickly after birth control pills, you should start another birth control method immediately if you don't want to get pregnant (and are having sex with someone who produces sperm). Also, if you're starting a new hormonal birth control method, like the pill or a hormonal IUD, they can take up to a week to become effective at preventing pregnancy.

In addition to stopping conception, birth control pills are also used to lessen painful or heavy periods, regulate cycles or help with other hormone-related concerns. Dr. Shari Lawson, assistant professor of gynecology and obstetrics at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, says that sometimes patients have been on the pill for so long, they forget the reasons they started it in the first place.

"The pill is just engineered to give you a regular period, but that's completely manufactured," Lawson says. "So once you stop taking the pill, your body's going to go back to what its normal cycle is." This means that if you had irregular periods before going on the pill, and then regular periods with the pill, you should expect your periods to be irregular again once you stop taking the pill.

How long till I'm fertile after taking out my IUD?

Whether it's the copper IUD (Paragard) or one of the hormone-releasing IUDS, you can get pregnant right away after your IUD comes out. The copper IUD prevents fertilization because the copper it releases is toxic to sperm, so it never stops ovulation or your "real" menstrual cycle. The IUDs with hormones, such as Mirena, sometimes stop ovulation but mostly work because the progestin they release thickens the cervical mucus and thins the lining of the uterus.

The only method that can delay someone's return to fertility is Depo Provera, Nathan says, which is an injection or shot of progestin you get at a doctor's office. According to the Mayo Clinic, it might take as long as 10 months for ovulation to resume after stopping the shot (but it could start much sooner).

In terms of other birth control methods: Barrier methods such as condoms don't prevent pregnancy once you stop using them. As far as the NuvaRing or "the patch" is concerned, these methods release the same hormones as combination birth control pills, meaning they temporarily stop ovulation and it will quickly resume again for most people. Fertility after removing your birth control implant, Nexplanon, also resumes as soon as it's taken out. (The implant, in particular, is known for being extremely effective as birth control.)

Two copper IUDs

The copper IUD (Paragard) doesn't use hormones to prevent pregnancy. Other IUDs release small amounts of the synthetic hormone progestin, which mimics the natural hormone progesterone.

How long does it take to get pregnant?

If you have regular cycles (occurring every 24 to 34 days), Lawson says, and you're engaging in "regularly timed intercourse," you have an 85% chance of conceiving within a year. For a person under the age of 35, conceiving in the first month of trying, or the 10th, can be considered normal. Patients in this group are given a year of actively trying to get pregnant before an evaluation for infertility is recommended.

For patients who are age 35 and up, the recommendation is to try for six months, then go in if pregnancy hasn't happened. That's because someone's egg quality starts to decline around age 35, making pregnancy, on average, a little more difficult.

Age is not the only factor that impacts someone's ability to conceive. Common conditions including polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis and having a past pelvic inflammatory infection can make pregnancy more difficult. Lifestyle factors, like alcohol consumption, smoking or even exercising too much, can also impact someone's fertility, according to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists.

What's more, health professionals estimate one-third of fertility issues stem from the other partner, most commonly with their sperm, according to the ACOG.

Chemical pregnancies, or very early miscarriages, are also common and can happen before someone even realizes they were pregnant. Such early miscarriages most commonly happen because of problems in the embryo.

Aside from chemical pregnancy, early pregnancy loss in general (also called miscarriage or spontaneous abortion) occurs within the first trimester (13 weeks) of pregnancy, and happens in about 10% of known pregnancies, according to the ACOG.

Are you more fertile after birth control?

Lawson says that while it's not likely, there's information that suggests that being on a combination birth control pill that suppresses your ovaries raises the "possibility that you may have more than one ovulation event," meaning two eggs could be released and the likelihood of at least one of them getting fertilized is greater.

Infertility doctors may also put their patients on birth control pills to keep their uterine lining "nice and clean" prior to pregnancy initiation, Nathan says. But for the average patient? "That's a myth," she says.

Wikipedia Set to Stop Accepting Cryptocurrency Donations

The Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit that owns Wikipedia, said it will no longer accept cryptocurrency as a means of donating. Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia that is run off reader donations.

"We began our direct acceptance of cryptocurrency in 2014 based on requests from our volunteers and donor communities," the foundation said on Sunday. "We are making this decision based on recent feedback from those same communities. Specifically, we will be closing our Bitpay account, which will remove our ability to directly accept cryptocurrency as a method of donating. We will continue to monitor this issue, and appreciate the feedback and consideration given to this evolving matter by people across the Wikimedia movement."

This decision comes after three-months of discussions within the Wiki community weighing the advantages and drawbacks of crypto donations. Many in the Wiki community argued against the usage of crypto due to environmental concerns and also argued that accepting crypto "constitutes implicit endorsement of the issues surrounding cryptocurrencies."

Cryptocurrency, often called crypto, is any form of currency that exists digitally or virtually and uses cryptography to prevent it from being counterfeit or double-spent. Popular cryptocurrencies include bitcoin, ether, dogecoin and litecoin -- all of which were previously accepted by the Wikimedia Foundation. Some critics see crypto as a risky and volatile form of investment due to fluctuating prices and lack of regulation.

Crypto donations have been a very small part of Wikipedia's overall fundraising, reportedly accounting for only 0.08% of last fiscal year's donations.
