Wi-Fi 6 devices: The top compatible phones, laptops and gadgets thus far

Wi-Fi 6 is the newest and fastest version of Wi-Fi, and we've watched it gradually start to roll out across the top wireless devices since its arrival in 2019. At this point, in 2021, there are plenty of interesting options if you're looking to buy in.

In a nutshell, Wi-Fi 6 is capable of top speeds that are about 30% faster than the fastest Wi-Fi 5 speeds, and it's much better equipped to handle busy networks with lots of devices, as well as dense, crowded environments with lots of users. It won't do anything to speed up a slow ISP connection, so don't expect miracles -- but it will help you get the fastest, most efficient connection possible at home.

You'll need a Wi-Fi 6 router and new Wi-Fi 6 devices in order to enjoy those benefits at home -- here are the top options currently available, which we'll update regularly.

Available for $399, the iPhone SE is the most affordable phone that supports faster Wi-Fi 6 connections.

It's not surprising that, after routers, smartphones were among the first devices to start incorporating support for Wi-Fi 6. Samsung was the first with the Galaxy S10, but Apple, LG, Huawei and others were soon to follow suit. 

As of now, the list of phones that can connect at faster Wi-Fi 6 speeds includes:

And what about the phones that don't support Wi-Fi 6? The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip comes to mind, but Google's Pixel lineup is probably the most notable example. Even the newest models -- the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4A 5G -- don't include Wi-Fi 6 support.

We're also starting to see the very first phones that support Wi-Fi 6E, a new designation for Wi-Fi 6 devices that are equipped to tap into the newly opened 6GHz band, which offers a massive amount of spectrum with no interference from older-gen connections. The first phones to support the designation include the Samsung Galaxy S21, as well as two gaming phones: the Lenovo Legion and the Asus ROG Phone 3. Each of those uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865 Plus processor, which boasts support for Wi-Fi 6E and 5G.

It's pretty likely that we'll see a handful of other phones jump in with Wi-Fi 6E by the end of this year, too, so stay tuned.

There's a growing number of new laptops that are shipping with Wi-Fi 6 as the default option. Some of our favorites include:

And nope, none of Apple's laptops support Wi-Fi 6 yet -- not even the newest, 13-inch MacBook Pro.

If your devices support Wi-Fi 6, then you'll need a Wi-Fi 6 router in order to take advantage of the faster top speeds. Our current favorite is this Asus ZenWifi AX mesh system.

Other devices

Other recent Wi-Fi 6 devices include the new eighth-gen iPad and fourth-gen iPad Air, but we haven't seen Wi-Fi 6 support in many other types of devices -- no TVs, no streamers, no smart home gadgets. That's likely to change in the coming months, though. We'll be sure to update this post as Wi-Fi 6 adoption spreads.

There's one big, obvious exception: routers. You'll need one that supports Wi-Fi 6 running your home network if you want to take full advantage of the Wi-Fi 6 radio in your fancy new phone or laptop -- and fortunately, you've already got a lot of options.

My favorite among them is the Asus ZenWifi AX, a two-piece Wi-Fi 6 mesh router that costs $450. It isn't cheap, but it aced my tests and offers just about everything you could reasonably want from a router. Even more of an upgrade: the $600 Netgear Orbi AX6000 mesh system, which hit the fastest top speeds we've ever seen from a mesh router.

If you don't need a multi-point mesh router (or if you just don't want to pay that much), you'll find Wi-Fi 6 support in standalone models that cost a little less. I like the TP-Link Archer AX6000 -- it hit the fastest top speeds our test lab has ever seen, and you can get for less than $300. Meanwhile, the TP-Link Archer AX1500 costs just $80 or less, though the top speeds are more limited.

Expect to see lots of new Wi-Fi 6 routers like those in 2021. We've already tested a few of the new ones that made their debut at this year's all-virtual CES, including the Asus RT-AX68U and the Arris Surfboard Max AX6600.

In addition, you might be able to update an older laptop with a new Wi-Fi 6 radio. For instance, Rivet Networks sells the Killer AX1650 Wi-Fi 6 adapter for laptops with an M.2 connector and a standard Key A or E socket. We picked one up last year to upgrade the laptop in our test lab and it works great. Cost? Just $50.

As for Wi-Fi 6E, we're just starting to see the arrival of the very first routers that include access to the newly unlocked 6GHz band. The first thus far is the Asus GT-AXE11000, a premium gaming router that's set to hit stores this month. Later this year, expect to see new Wi-Fi 6E routers from Netgear, Linksys, TP-Link and others, too.

At some point, you'll realize that your finger isn't always ideal for using on your phone or tablet.

For me, the epiphany came when I realized that a stylus would help me draw more accurately on my tablet. But because I was not willing to spend $10 to $30 on a piece of metal or wait for the product to ship, I opted for a DIY solution.

To function, a stylus needs to be able to carry the static electricity from your finger to a conductive material and onto the screen. With that in mind, I created a stylus out of supercheap materials I had at home.

Within minutes, I made a free stylus for doing anything from browsing the Web to drawing masterpieces. I'm calling it "The 2-minute Stylus."

Here's what you'll need:

• A cotton swab (aka "Q-tip")
• Aluminum foil
• Scissors
• Tape
• A pen

1. Remove the ink from the pen.

2. Cut the cotton swab at a sharp angle and insert it into the mouth of the pen. Secure with tape.

3. Wrap the foil around the neck of the pen, a couple of centimeters above the tip of the cotton swab. Wrap tightly, and secure with tape at the top.

4. Moisten the cotton swab with a drop of water. (No, this will not harm your tablet's or phone's screen.)

That's it! Your stylus is ready for use. Note that your finger must be touching the foil at all times, and if your stylus stops functioning, re-moisten it with a touch of water.

Ashes of Star Trek's Nichelle Nichols to Head for Deep Space

The ashes of late actress Nichelle Nichols, who portrayed Lieutenant Uhura on the original Star Trek TV series, will be launched into space later this year.

Celestis, a private company that conducts memorial spaceflights, said Friday it will carry her cremated remains about 186 million miles into space, beyond NASA's James Webb Space Telescope, aboard a Vulcan Centaur rocket.

"We are truly honored to add a legendary actress, activist, and educator to the Enterprise Flight manifest," Celestis CEO Charles M. Chafer said in a statement. "Now our Enterprise Flight will have on board the person who most completely embodied the vision of Star Trek as … diverse, inclusive, and exploring the universe."

Nichols, who helped break down color barriers as one of the first Black actors to have a leading role in a network TV series, died in July at the age of 89. Playing the USS Enterprise's translator and communications officer, she's also credited with helping NASA recruit women and minorities to be astronaut candidates.

The rocket, set to launch later this year from Cape Canaveral, Florida, will carry more than 200 capsules containing ashes, messages of greetings and DNA samples. The ashes of other Star Trek figures will also be on the flight, including series creator Gene Roddenberry; his wife Majel Barrett Roddenberry, who played Nurse Chapel in the original series; James Doohan, who played Montgomery "Scotty" Scott; and Douglas Trumbull, who created visual effects for Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

The flight will also include messages of tribute that fans can send through the flight's website, said Kyle Johnson, Nichols' son. "My only regret is that I cannot share this eternal tribute standing beside my mother at the launch," he said in a statement.

Roddenberry cast Nichols in Star Trek as the Enterprise's comms officer in 1966, a groundbreaking role that came in the middle of the civil rights movement. She stayed with the series until it was canceled in 1969 and reprised the role in six Star Trek films between 1979 and 1991, along with fellow original cast members William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley and George Takei.

Nichols also had a close association with NASA, helping sign up Guion Bluford, the first Black astronaut, and Sally Ride, the first female American astronaut (among others). Mae Jemison, the first woman of color to travel in space, has cited Nichols as one of her inspirations.

Google to Start Sending Rapid Air Raid Alerts to Android Users in Ukraine

Google has started rolling out a rapid Air Raid Alerts system for Android users in Ukraine as the Russian invasion of the country continues. 

"Tragically, millions of people in Ukraine now rely on air strike alerts to try to get to safety," Google said in a statement Thursday. "This work is supplemental to the country's existing air raid alert systems and based on alerts already being delivered by the Ukrainian government."

This announcement comes a day after Russian forces reportedly bombed a maternity and children's hospital in the southern Ukrainian city of Mariupol.

Google also announced it's developing a way for hotel owners in countries around Ukraine to indicate whether they are offering free or discounted accommodations for refugees fleeing the invading forces. As of Thursday, more than 2 million refugees had escaped the country. Google last week added refugee resources for asylum seekers leaving Ukraine and added an SOS Alert on Search.

"As we compile this information over the coming weeks, we'll make it possible for people to quickly find these places on Search and Maps," Google said. 

Google is also pausing the majority of its commercial activities in Russia, including new Cloud sign-ups, payments function for many Google services and monetization features for YouTube viewers in Russia. Google previously suspended its ad business in Russia and disabled live traffic data in Ukraine for safety.

You already know that brushing your teeth twice a day is considered the best dental hygiene practice. But did you know you should skip rinsing your mouth after? I used to rinse thoroughly after brushing my teeth to remove any remnants of toothpaste left in my mouth. But this method isn't the best and I only found out last year while scrolling through TikTok. 

Instead, I now spit out as much toothpaste as I can without swishing with water so I can allow the toothpaste to do its work just a little longer. However, I wasn't sure why I was doing this -- or what the benefits were -- until I spoke with an expert.

I talked to Dr. Edmond Hewlett, consumer advisor for the American Dental Association and professor at UCLA School of Dentistry, to find out why you shouldn't rinse your mouth with water after brushing your teeth. Here's the answer.

Why it's important to skip rinsing with water after brushing your teeth

Fluoride is an important ingredient in toothpaste that helps make the enamel harder and more resistant to acids that cause cavities. Hewlett says it's the most well-established effective ingredient in toothpaste, so make sure yours has fluoride in it. 

When you brush your teeth, you're cleaning any film and bacteria from food and sugary drinks. When you go a step further and skip rinsing, you're leaving the fluoride from the toothpaste in your mouth for a longer time, giving you a better effect from the fluoride.

Wait at least 15 minutes after brushing to drink water. After brushing your teeth, Hewlett explains, your saliva will clear the toothpaste out so you won't taste it all day. 

What if you've been rinsing all your life? 

If you're just finding out about this tip, you may be thinking you've been undoing all your hard work of brushing every day. But that's not true. Hewlett says as long as you brush the standard two times a day for two minutes each time, the fluoride will remain in your mouth to help protect your teeth. 

You're still doing what you need to do to have good oral health to protect your teeth. The idea of not rinsing is just an extra step to help the fluoride be even more effective.

"When you measure a person's fluoride levels in saliva, if they don't rinse, there's more fluoride," Hewlett said. But it's not going to be a waste of your time if you do rinse. He said research is still being done to determine the difference it makes in the long term to prevent cavities. 

Check that your toothpaste contains fluoride.

Your specific dental health also plays a role

There are different risk levels for getting cavities per person, Hewlett said. 

"If you typically don't get cavities, then you should continue using fluoride toothpaste. The decision to rinse or not to rinse after brushing probably won't make a difference."

On the other hand, for those who struggle with cavities, not rinsing is probably a better decision. Additionally, you should get help from your dentist to find out why you're getting cavities regularly -- for instance, it could be your eating habits, snacking on sugary foods or not brushing your teeth regularly. If you're at higher risk for cavities, you should do everything you can to help prevent them. 

Is it OK to use mouthwash to rinse your teeth after brushing?

It's OK as long as you use a mouthwash that also contains fluoride so you can still get the same effect. Otherwise, without fluoride, it's similar to rinsing with water.

More teeth brushing tips

Here are some additional tips for keeping your oral health up to par.

• Always use a soft bristle toothbrush, and never medium or hard. Hewlett says anything but soft can increase the risk of gum recession. 
• It doesn't matter if you floss before or after you brush your teeth, as long as you floss once a day to remove plaque and stuck food. 
• You don't have to aggressively brush your teeth to get them clean. While scrubbing your dishes with extra force may make them extra clean, it's not necessary for your teeth and can also lead to gum recession.
• Gently brush along the gum line with a soft bristle brush to help prevent gum disease.
• Always consult with your dentist for personalized advice. They understand what your oral health profile looks like.

Let's get right to it: I love the HP x2. It's a terrific Chromebook laptop with a great display, a keyboard that's comfortable to type on and surprisingly peppy performance. And it's also a fabulous tablet -- thin and lightweight, responsive to touch and stylus and perceptive to orientation. Plus -- and this is a big one -- it comes with stylus and keyboard included at a time when many premium hybrids insist you buy them separately.

If you can live without the few remaining apps that require Windows or Mac OS -- and trust me, most of you can -- the Chromebook x2 is your jam.

Accessories included

Priced at $599, the x2's closest competitor is Google's new Pixel Slate, which also runs Google's stripped-down Chrome OS and starts at $599 (though higher-end configurations cost more). But the Pixel Slate comes without two vital accessories, and adding the $99 Pixel stylus and $199 keyboard jacks up the price to $899.

You run into the same problem with Microsoft's Surface Pro 6, which starts at $899, and the 12.9-inch version of Apple's newest iPad Pro, which starts at $799. Adding the stylus and keyboard adds hundreds more to those already hefty price tags.

Simple, straightforward and fast

Now, the x2's specs aren't particularly impressive, especially compared to the devices named above, with the exception of the entry-level Pixel Slate, which runs an inferior Celeron CPU. The x2 comes with an Intel Core m3-7Y30 processor, 4GB of RAM and a pitiful 32GB hard drive. 

HP doesn't offer alternate configurations in the US, though the version it sells in the UK has twice the RAM and storage capacity for £799, which converts to roughly $1,015 -- a price that totally undermines the x2's appeal. It's not yet available in Australia.

And yet, somehow, these components come together in way that surpassed my expectations. Often, two-in-ones seem confused -- staggering when you switch from laptop to tablet, or just moving slowly in general. But the x2 is positively zippy. I experienced zero performance lag, in tablet or laptop mode, when loading up websites or opening apps. I hit the button to install Spotify, blinked, and it was done.

Yes, a 32GB hard drive is lame -- but this is a Chromebook, after all. Some degree of reliance on internet-connected apps and storage services is part of the deal, and when it works, it's fast. That noted, Chromebooks have evolved; they're no longer confined to online-only apps and tools. Most, including this one, support the Google Play Store, which lets you download and use almost any Android app, whether you're connected to the internet or not.

Convertibility, uncompromised

Like the Surface Pro 6 and Pixel Slate, the x2 has a 12.3-inch touchscreen. Though it has the lowest resolution of the bunch (2,400x1,600 pixels) and is no match for the iPad Pro's Liquid Retina display, it's more than good enough for writing documents and reading articles. Whether I used a finger or the included stylus, the x2 was responsive and accurate. And the x2 converts elegantly to a standalone tablet -- simply lift the display off of two plastic protrusions connected to the keyboard.

I watched the Netflix stand up comedy miniseries Bumping Mics -- I recommend it, by the way -- and some short documentaries on the New York Times' website. Video looked bright, vibrant and super crisp. I don't mind the x2's significant bezel, which makes for a good grip when in tablet mode. And the Bang & Olufson stereo speakers are better than average: surprisingly loud and balanced, though, like nearly all laptops and tablets, weaker on the low-end.

Everything else you need in a tablet and laptop

The keyboard is a bit mushy, but big and comfortable enough to type on when resting on a lap or tabletop. The x2's touchpad is slightly undersized and not great -- but the iPad Pro's keyboard has none. The x2's included stylus runs on one AAA battery and can be stowed in a loop connected to the keyboard. It's not the most secure setup, and given the loop's propensity to catch on things, I'd be a bit concerned about its durability over the long haul.

With two USB-C ports, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microSD slot, the x2 beats out both the iPad Pro and the Surface Pro in the ports and connections department. It also has two cameras -- a 5-megapixel front-facing cam for selfies and a 13-megapixel setup on the back. They're not quite as good as what you'd find on a proper Android or iOS tablet, but they're fine for photos and video, with a user interface that's simple and intuitive.

Battery life is solid. HP says the x2 rated for up to 12.5 hours, and we got a bit more than 10 hours in our streaming video drain test; better than the Surface Pro and equal to the iPad Pro. Completely charging the x2's battery took about 30 minutes.

HP delivers a standout 2-in-1

It isn't as flashy as the pricier Surface Pro, Pixel Slate or iPad Pro. And, yes, there are some inherent limitations in any Chromebook. But, for hundreds less than any of them (in the US, at least), the HP x2 delivers everything most folks will need for entertainment and productivity from a laptop and a tablet. I recommend it.

2023 Chevy Bolt EV, EUV Get Major Price Cuts to Stay Competitive

Patience can be a virtue. The Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV have always been relatively affordable, hovering below the average new-car transaction price. But now, for the 2023 model year, these two electric cars are much more affordable.

Chevrolet announced on Wednesday that the 2023 Bolt EV and 2023 Bolt EUV earned some serious price cuts. A 2023 Bolt EV will cost $26,595 (including $995 for destination), a major drop from 2022's starting price of $32,495. Moving up to the 2LT variant will cost $29,795, down from $35,695.

The higher-riding Bolt EUV is also staring down one heck of a haircut. A base LT now costs $28,195, down from $34,495, while the fancier Premier trim stickers for $32,695 instead of $38,995. If you want the slick new Redline Edition package, which zhushes up the aesthetics, it's a $495 upgrade for either EUV trim. The Redline Edition is not available on the Bolt EV.

Now, it wouldn't be obscene to assume that some de-contenting has taken place in order to bring these prices down. But, according to an email from a Chevrolet spokesperson, the content and options for the two models "are pretty much the same."

"The new price reflects our ongoing desire to make sure Bolt EV/EUV is competitive in the marketplace and better aligns the MSRP with average transaction price, providing more price transparency to the customer." So, by the sounds of it, dealers were already selling some vehicles below MSRP, so these lower prices are better reflective of what buyers have actually been paying at the point of purchase.

While the Bolt EUV crossover was new for the 2022 model year, the Bolt EV picked up some adjustments at the same time to bring the two models closer together, including revised aesthetics inside and out. Both models rely on a single electric motor to produce 200 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, which is sent to the front wheels. The EPA estimates the Bolt EV is good for about 259 miles on a single charge, while the slightly larger Bolt EUV is rated at 247 miles.
