Meet the DJI RoboMaster S1

DJI enters another new product category with the RoboMaster S1, a DIY ground robot kit for consumers and STEM education.

46 pieces

The base $500 kit includes 46 parts, including microphones, cameras and IR and impact sensors.

DJI RoboMaster S1

There are 31 sensors in all, which is more than the company puts in its drones.

4 of 30 Joshua Goldman/CNET

Motorin'

There are six brushless servo motors for high speed and accuracy.

5 of 30 Joshua Goldman/CNET

Omnidirectional wheels

The motors and Mecanum wheels allow the S1 to move in any direction, not unlike DJI's drones do in the air.

Gimbal

The S1's first-person view camera, infrared beam and gel-bead blaster are on one of the company's motorized gimbals that are typically used for stabilizing cameras.

7 of 30 Joshua Goldman/CNET

Blaster

The blaster can shoot an infrared beam at targets or the sensors on another S1.

8 of 30 Joshua Goldman/CNET

Blaster beads

Or you can load the blaster with a cartridge you fill with water gel beads. They arrive dehydrated (right), but soaking them in water plumps them up for shooting (left). They're squishy and break apart sometimes on impact.

Gel beads

If you're familiar with Orbeez, that's essentially what these are. The blaster fire rate and angle pitch are limited to avoid injury and DJI will include eye protection just to be safe. They eventually dehydrate and can be vacuumed up for easy cleaning.

Ready for battle

The S1's target sensors are LED-lit so you can easily aim at them when you're in competition mode. They respond to being hit by the beads or IR.

Expansion

Though you get everything you need to build the S1 out of the box, there are six pulse width modulation (PWM) ports that allow you to add additional third-party accessories like speakers or LEDs.

12 of 30 Joshua Goldman/CNET

Radio radio

The S1 can be controlled with a phone or tablet or with an optional controller paired with your phone or tablet.

13 of 30 Joshua Goldman/CNET

FPV camera

Though the S1's main camera is for navigation and targeting, it you can record full HD-resolution video with it and take photos.

14 of 30 Joshua Goldman/CNET

Entertainment modes

Though DJI mainly created it as an education tool, it's also built for play. Solo game modes allow you to practice your driving skills and taking aim at targets.

There are multiplayer options as well so you can race your friends and family or battle them in a Free-for-All mode which lets you shoot at other S1's with IR beams or the gel beads.

A view from the camera

Like flying a drone, it's best to drive the S1 by using the FPV camera feed on screen.

16 of 30 Joshua Goldman/CNET

Vision markers

Included are a set of vision markers, such as the "1" you can see in this picture. In race modes you can use a set to act as checkpoints or use them for IR target practice.

In multiplayer battles, there's a Heart marker you can scan that virtually repairs your S1 if you get hit by an opponent. Similarly, a Mystery Bonus marker gives you one of four boosts to use against your competition: Dizziness, Electromagnetic Interference, Extreme Speed, and Invincibility.

17 of 30 Joshua Goldman/CNET

Remote control

The controller isn't included, though maybe that's for the best. Steering is mainly done with left joystick while swiping with your right thumb on your tablet or phone screen controls the blaster/camera.

18 of 30 Joshua Goldman/CNET

Controller connections

Your left index finger rests on the trigger.

19 of 30 Joshua Goldman/CNET

Tap to shoot

Unlike DJI's other robots, capturing photos and videos is secondary to the STEM aspects of the S1.

20 of 30 Joshua Goldman/CNET

Fully programmable

In the S1's app is access to coding tools. Under the Road to Mastery section, you'll find project-based courses on programming languages. Video tutorials and programming guides can be found under RoboAcademy.

Python

You can code in Python, too.

Controls

You can control the S1 with a phone or tablet on its own or paired with the optional controller or with a keyboard and mouse.

26 of 30 Joshua Goldman/CNET

Controller + mouse = Win

I do not like the controller on its own. However, using a mouse to control the blaster and firing is a winning combo.

Buying a Google Pixel 6 for Black Friday? This deal is better than Google's own sale

Buying a Google Pixel 6 for Black Friday? This deal is better than Google's own sale

Hoping to score a deal on Google's Pixel 6 phone? It's worth hunting for a Black Friday sale: Google's phone is a CNET Editors' Choice Award winner.

Google itself does have a Pixel on sale on its store, but it's the Pixel 5A for $50 off, not the Pixel 6, which the search giant is selling for $599 unlocked.

The Pixel 6 has new camera hardware and features wide and ultrawide lenses, as well as the neat Magic Eraser tool in Google Photos that can remove unwanted objects -- and people -- from your pictures. "I can't think of a better phone to recommend" at the price, CNET's Patrick Holland said in his review . Here's what we know about Pixel 6 sales for Black Friday, if you're looking to save money on an already affordable phone.

Best Buy's Pixel 6 Black Friday sale

A $549 128GB Pixel 6 is available at Best Buy, just for Verizon and T-Mobile customers, if you activate when you purchase. That's $50 cheaper than you can find elsewhere.

Best Buy had the Pixel 6 on sale for $499, but that price was for a new line or new account, not an upgrade. And right now it's sold out.

Target's Pixel 6 Black Friday sale

Target did have the Pixel 6 on sale on Nov. 21 with an early Black Friday deal -- knocking $50 off the 128GB phone to $549. But right now, the phone is out of stock on Target's site.

The price was for the unlocked version, meaning there are no special requirements or a set carrier, making this a great deal if you're looking to upgrade. It also means it does not support mmWave. Just the Verizon and AT&T versions handle that flavor of 5G.

For now, there's no news about the Pixel 6 Pro getting a Black Friday price cut, but we will post all the latest news about Black Friday deals on the Pixel series here, so keep checking back.

Huawei's Honor 7S is about as affordable as phones get

Huawei's Honor 7S is about as affordable as phones get

Huawei

We liked Huawei's recent Honor 10 phone, but at £399 (converts to $540 or AU$720), it's hardly a budget device.

The latest Honor phone though, the 7S, is truly a phone for those on a tight budget. It'll sell for just £99 in the UK, where it's now available. Though there's no word on an Australian or US release, that price roughly translates to $129 and AU$175.

For that modest price, you'll get a phone with a 5.45-inch, 720x1,440-pixel display. With an 18:9 screen ratio, it has less bezel than you'd expect from a £99 phone. Inside is 16GB of storage, a 1.5GHz quad-core MediaTek CPU and 2GB of RAM.

Huawei is pushing two special features: Loud Voice Call, which during a phone call helps the other person's voice cut through ambient noise, and a smart battery management function to extend battery life.

Huawei's premium P and Mate lines typically have blazing fast processors and cutting-edge features, like the recent P20 Pro's triple camera setup. The Chinese company's Honor line, meanwhile, is aimed at people who don't want to drop a huge amount of cash on a phone. The 7S is on the cheaper side, with more pricey phones in the range including the 7X

  • 5.45-inch, 720x1,440-pixel display
  • Quad-core, 1.5GHz MediaTek MT6739 CPU
  • 2GB RAM, 16GB onboard storage
  • Expandable storage up to 256GB
  • 13MP rear camera, 5MP selfie shooter
  • 3,020mAh battery

Repair Shops Could Fix iPhone Face ID Issues Without Swapping Out Whole Device

Repair Shops Could Fix iPhone Face ID Issues Without Swapping Out Whole Device

If you walked into a gadget repair shop to get your iPhone's FaceID cameras fixed, you probably had to get your entire phone replaced. But fix-it shops may get access to Apple parts and hand back your same device after a simple fix.

Apple will soon give authorized repair centers and individuals access to TrueDepth Camera parts that iPhones use for Face ID functionality, according to a memo seen by MacRumors. The shops could swap out the part instead of the whole phone, which would help reduce the carbon footprint of each iPhone.

Only iPhone XS and newer Apple phones will qualify for the repairs, according to MacRumors, despite Face ID debuting on the iPhone X.

It's unclear when this new repair option will be available, but the report only mentioned giving access to authorized repair shops, not to individuals who'll be able to fix their own iPhones once Apple's do-it-yourself repair program, announced last November, goes live. Self Service Repair, as it's called, lets customers buy parts from Apple and download official repair manuals online, but it wasn't clear how many components and processes would be available, and it's possible the TrueDepth Camera parts won't be included.

Apple didn't respond to a request for comment.

Galaxy Z Fold 4 Pops Up in Amazon Listing Ahead of Samsung Unpacked

Galaxy Z Fold 4 Pops Up in Amazon Listing Ahead of Samsung Unpacked

Ahead of Samsung Unpacked next week, a listing for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 appears to have popped up on Amazon Netherlands. The listing for the unannounced phone, reported earlier by 9to5Google, doesn't include a price but reveals plenty of details.

Images in the listing show the foldable phone with the same screen sizes at its predecessor, with a 6.2-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display. Both displays will have a 120Hz refresh rate, according to the listing.

A new S Pen case for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is also shown off in the listing, and it appears to adjust the position where the stylus is stored compared with the Z Fold 3 case.

Alongside the S Pen case and display details, Amazon Netherlands has listed the color for the new phone as beige. However, this color name might not be final. One of the images with the listing also shows the phone in a black or dark gray color, while the new S Pen case appears to be gray with a hint of green.

The images in the listing also revealed new software for Samsung phones. While the specific details of the software that will be loaded onto the Galaxy Z Fold 4 are not listed on Amazon Netherlands, the photos bear a striking resemblance to the teaser photos of Android 12L. Android announced its 12L software late last year, and promised updates for foldable phones.

However, there are some slight differences between the photos included in the listing and the 12L teaser photos. The photos included in the listing showcase a couple of additional buttons on the taskbar. It will be hard to know for sure what the software that is advertised in the listing actually is until Samsung Unpacked, when the company is likely to give details on new releases like the Galaxy Z Fold 4.

Samsung Unpacked is set to take place Aug.10 and is expected to give consumers official information on the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Samsung is also rumored to announce the Galaxy Watch 5 and the successors to the Galaxy Bud 2 earbuds.

Samsung didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Windows 7 to 10 upgrade: Seriously, here's why you need to update

It's been almost two years since Microsoft officially ended support for Windows 7 in January 2020. The end shouldn't have come as a surprise to Windows users: Microsoft promised 10 years of product support for Windows 7 when it was released in October 2009, before shifting focus to supporting newer technologies, like Windows 11

That means Microsoft no longer offers technical assistance or software updates to your device, and the company encouraged people to upgrade to Windows 10 to keep their PCs and laptops secure. (If you're a Windows 8.1 user, extended support for that OS won't end until January 2023.) But don't worry -- you can still use this trick to download Windows 10 for free if you want to. And with Windows 10, you can upgrade to Windows 11 for free.

Keep reading for everything you need to know about the end of Windows 7 support, and how to make the switch to Windows 10.

Why did Microsoft end support for Windows 7?

Microsoft has a long-established Fixed Lifestyle Policy for many of its products. For each version of its OS, the company offers a minimum of 10 years of support (at least five years of Mainstream support, followed by five years of Extended support). Both types include security and program updates, self-help online topics and extra help you can pay for.

Windows 7 was released in October 2009, so its 10-year life cycle has come to a close. Windows 10 was released in 2015, and extended support for the latest version of the OS is slated to end in 2025.

Will my Windows 7 computer stop working?

Your Windows 7 computer will keep working, but Microsoft won't provide security updates or fixes, or technical support for any issues -- leaving your computer at greater risk from viruses and malware that may circulate to take advantage of any flaws that are later discovered.

That's why it's critically important for you to switch to an OS version that Microsoft will still put resources behind.

Do I have to make the switch to Windows 10?

No one can force you to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10, but you're leaving your devices and potentially your privacy vulnerable if you don't make the jump. Without security updates or fixes, you're putting your computer at risk -- an especially dangerous choice, as many forms of malwaretarget Windows devices.

Windows 10 also has a number of built-in security tools: Windows Defender Antivirus protects against malware and spyware across email, apps, the cloud and the web, while Windows Hello offers a password-free sign-in option to unlock your devices with your face or a fingerprint reader. A Find My Device service can lock and erase your Windows device remotely, or map the location of your device.

Isn't Windows 10 pretty buggy?

Some people have been hesitant to make the switch due to reports of several bugs in earlier versions of Windows 10. But Microsoft has made several changes to its update approach since then. The biggest change came with the May 2019 release, including slower rollouts with additional testing, more options for pausing updates and more disclosure of known issues, so your experience should be smoother.

Many of the issues were due to the fact that updates are happening more frequently, said Gartner Research analyst Steve Kleynhans. "But overall most users seem pretty happy with the OS and like the experience it brings, especially on newer devices," he added.

What's the difference between Windows 7 and Windows 10, anyway?

Besides a suite of security tools, Windows 10 also offers more features. One is the Your Phone app, which allows you to access texts, notifications and apps from your phone using your PC -- similar to Apple's Continuity features. A feature called Calls allows you to place and answer Android calls on your PC (and you can connect your iPhone to your Windows PC as well). A dictation feature lets you easily record ideas.

Microsoft's digital assistant Cortana is also available on Windows 10 PCs. The OS also integrates better with Microsoft OneDrive and other cloud tools.

Read more: 11 easy Windows 10 tricks you didn't know about

The most recent Windows 10 November 2021 update includes features like new Wi-Fi security standards and other changes aimed at management and security.

Unlike previous versions of the OS, Windows 10 offers automatic updates by default, to keep systems more secure. (You can turn these off if you want to, by going to Windows Update Settings > Advanced Options and changing from Automatic to another option in the drop-down menu.)

How do I upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10? How much will it cost me?

You can buy and download Windows 10 via Microsoft's website for $139. While Microsoft technically ended its free Windows 10 upgrade program in July 2016, as of November 2021, CNET has confirmed the free update is still available for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 users. Check out our step-by-step guide on how to upgrade to Windows 10 for free.

Nebraska Police Obtained Facebook Messages About Teen's Alleged Abortion

Nebraska Police Obtained Facebook Messages About Teen's Alleged Abortion

Facebook parent Meta provided Nebraska police with messages between a teenager accused of having an illegal abortion and her mother after the social media giant was served with a search warrant, court documents show.

Police in Norfolk, Nebraska, started the investigation in April before the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that established abortion rights. The Supreme Court's decision has sparked concerns about how online data could be used as criminal evidence against people seeking abortions.

The Lincoln Journal Star earlier reported that 41-year-old Jessica Burgess is facing criminal charges for allegedly helping her daughter, who was 17 years old at the time, abort, burn and bury her fetus. The mother pleaded not guilty, and will face a trial in Madison County District Court. (CNET isn't identifying the daughter, who was a minor at the time of the alleged abortion.)

The teenager told a Norfolk Police detective that she miscarried and gave birth to a stillborn, court documents say. Nebraska bars most abortions 20 weeks after fertilization and police determined from the teen's medical records that she was more than 23 weeks pregnant at the time.

When the detective interviewed the teenager about the timing of the miscarriage, the teen scrolled through messages on her Facebook Messenger account from April, when she was trying to get her mother's attention. The detective then identified the mother and daughter's Facebook accounts.

"I know from prior training and experience, and conversations with other seasoned criminal investigators, that people involved in criminal activity frequently have conversations regarding their criminal activities through various social networking sites, i.e. Facebook," Ben McBride, a detective for the Norfolk Police Division, said in an affidavit supporting the search warrant to Meta. The document states the detective believes the premises of Meta "are being used for the purpose of securing or keeping evidence related to Prohibited Acts with Skeletal Remains."

The detective outlined the Facebook data he was seeking related to the investigation, including photos and private messages. The police were then able to seize more than 250,000 kilobytes of data tied to the teenager's Facebook account, including account information, images, videos and messages, and more than 50,000 KB of data associated with Jessica Burgess' account, according to court documents.

The Facebook messages suggested that Jessica Burgess had given her daughter instructions about how to take abortion pills after obtaining them, the Lincoln Journal Star reported. After police obtained the Facebook messages, Jessica Burgess faced two more felony charges for allegedly performing or attempting an abortion on a pregnancy at more than 20 weeks and performing an abortion as a non-licensed doctor, The Lincoln Journal Star reported. Burgess and her daughter faced other charges in June, including removing, concealing or abandoning a dead human body.

Meta didn't answer questions about how many of these types of requests it's received.

Meta spokesman Andy Stone told Forbes that he couldn't immediately confirm any details about the incident. He tweeted late Tuesday that the company received the warrants in June before the Supreme Court overturned Roe V. Wade.

"The warrants concerned charges related to a criminal investigation and court documents indicate that police at the time were investigating the case of a stillborn baby who was burned and buried, not a decision to have an abortion," Stone tweeted.

Motherboard earlier obtained documents about the case that included the messages between the mother and daughter.

Neither the mother nor the daughter immediately responded to request for comment.

The police and Meta's actions have sparked more scrutiny over the social network, which has been plagued with data privacy scandals. On Tuesday, some Twitter users were urging women to #DeleteFacebook and the hashtag was trending.

Civil rights advocacy group Color of Change also raised concerns that "anti-abortion extremists" would use social media to "coordinate the harassment and bounty hunting of people seeking abortions."

Messages on Facebook Messenger aren't encrypted by default, which would prevent Facebook or anyone else from viewing the messages. Facebook Messenger users can send encrypted messaged by turning on a feature known as secret conversations.
